A few months ago, it was agreed that white number plates were now allowed front and back.  It's a personal choice whether you have yellow ones to the rear.

The old black plates with silver numbers are now illegal, except on cars manufactured before the reflective plates were introduced.

Same as in Holland. I believe the year is 1974, untill then you are allowed to carry the old Dutch plates; dark blue with white lettering. I guess the British law should be quite simular.

In the UK vehicles constructed before 1.1.1973 may display traditional style “black and white” plates i.e. white, silver or grey characters on a black plate. That is unless you drive a Veyron.

Not wishing to argue, but I was told the cut off date for the old style plates was for cars registered before October '73. This was when I had my plates made for my VW Camper..... but that was years ago and i may be talking rubbish, but thats what the plate maker told me.
There are also several Mk2 Golf Gti owners in my area who seem to be hassle free running Black and Silver plates on D, G and H plates, one of which is in German size and style letters and numbers.
Each to their own I suppose!
