Ruffled a few feathers when it first appeared.
I have to admit that the Black & Gold JPS and the Gulf Racing colours are the two iconic ones for me.

It has to be anything in Martini colours for me- looked great on everything from the Lancia Delta rally cars and group C racer to the Longtail 917. The Hippie car was my all time fave. F1 wise I always liked the 7up Jordans from the 90's. Simple but pleasing.
The Poulain BMW Art Car at last years LM Classic looked amazing as well.

those aesthetically wonderful almost phsycadelic(SP) martini stripes on that purely funcional back end are truely beautiful.

i've been trying to find the Rally Cross xtrac Escort, STP i think of maybe Will Gollop? Could be wrong with the driver and STP but do remember that as a kid on a saturday and being very impressed, that was before the days of the RS200's and the like joining in having been banned from rallying.

For me its anything in Martini scheme (white or silver, but not green or red) Gulf colours, Rothmans, Sunoco blue and yellow or just to add something different. I think this colour scheme used by BriSCA legend Stuart Smith between 1968 and 1976 was iconic.

Drawn a blank on the Run Baby Run Escort of Brodie. Found a few B/W ones but for such a famous car its odd they are no colour ones.

The STP cars were run by John Welsh I think. He had a tie up with Martin Schanche and brought his old cars from him, this one http://rupert8766.fotopic.net/p5737430.html is the X Trac Escort before Welsh run it when Schanche was still using it.

Schanche also tried his had at Le Mans a couple of times driving an Argo. Not sure he had the right mind set for long distance races given his firey nature. He ended up as a Norwegen MP

Other great Rally X where the 4 wd Beetles and Porsche's the best was Alamaki's one, that if remember correctly had an engine from a 935 and was stunning.

One that always impressed me was a 4 wd BMW 320 of Peit Dam. it was brutal.

George Polly used to live not more than a mile from were I live in Pound Hill. We used to see his car parked up on a trailer in his drive way.

He was sponsored by Billy Bridges, the local car breakers.

Yup.  Afraid so...  Those were the days.. I've gone over all nostaligic.  Although the pics I took back then on my old Instamatic are awful, they're still some of my favourites.  Hang on to even the cr*p stuff you take when you're young, because you'll never forget.  Sad old bat or what? ::)

Blimey - just think of the drag from the open quarter lights - could have been on 2 wheels otherwise!!!

Termie,
Like what you said about hanging on to the crappy, grainy, blurry old photos you took when you were a kid.  I've got stacks of photos I took with my cheap little Kodak Instamatic from Mid-Ohio Can-Am, F5000, and Trans-Am's, and Indy (when the Indianapolis 500 was a man's race).  I take one glance at those and it puts me right back in 1972 or '73.

Ain't that the truth.  Here's one I love - the great old Reggae..  So good to have been there.  Would love to see some of those old Can-Am shots some day.

Fax,
You have to scan them and post a few. As termi has already said, photos from that era, and from the right side of the fence are worth many words.

There was a fence? ;D  Amazing to think that between me and JC (first Lotus Cortina pic' I posted - taken at Oulton) there was just a rope - oh, and maybe the odd hay bale!

Too true.....

I will bore you with another from my collection!

The Iconic Otis Rondeau from 81 (the only ones I have from 80 are taken thru a fence!) taken on the the run up to the dunlop bridge before it was ruined by the chicane and you could feel the wind as the cars passed and smell the hot gasses.

Lovely, not boring at all.  And talking of "Classic Race Liveries" - here's one I have a real soft spot for

It's not that nice really, but there's no mistaking what it is...

Termie, Nordic,
I'll dig up some of the old Can-Am pics and scan them.  Have a nice one of Mark Donohue in the 917/30 at Mid-Ohio from 1973, also some good Shadow photos (loved the UOP Shadow's, was always taking shots of Jackie Oliver's car).
Another iconic livery?  Al Holbert's Lowenbrau Porsche 962.

Best livery, car and track for me has to be.... sums up the end of the era of developing and racing road going cars (albeit expensive ones...) before the pure prototypes came along (which ring the same bells but in a different way)

That part of the circuit (and the run down from the bridge to the esses) really was fantastic...

But not any more...  >:( :(

The pit straight's still okay and I enjoy Mulsanne corner and particularly Indianapolis at night, where we spent a good few hours this year. It retains the "old time" flavour and was enjoyabl;e enought for us to miss the CA poo bar gathering.

The rest of the official spectator areas are a crock of sh*t. Everyone else raved about the "new improved" Tertre Rouge and the viewing banking. Personally I thought it  far inferior to the old layout from a spectator point of view. Where am I going wrong compared to what everyone else can see?

I have to agree Andy, I really missed standing under the old Tetre Rouge pine trees and ducking through the old tunnel in the early hours for a beer et frites in the early hours this year.
I also think the pit straight lost a bit of its magic when the tower at the pit exit went too. I even miss trying to buy fags from the surly Bastards in the so-called welcome whilst slightly worse for wear. I guess its called progress matey!

Sadly, Andy - thanks be to the lovely Mr Sarko - it seems that we who live here but aren't pensioners - are now going to have to have full private health cover, instead of paying into the French state health scheme.  So sadly, baby cars are the only ones I will be buying in the near future....  :'(

The Sun has been running a competition of favourite racing liveries.

See here

Needless to say, The Sun being The Sun, they had to have a little fun with the results and some some page 3 stunnahs!

I'm personally delighted that the Martini Porsche 917 won, and a close second was the Gulf GT40. Sun readers clearly have taste.
