Title: DTM Accident
Post by: Piglet on April 22, 2007, 02:45:49 pm
Big incident on the first lap of DTM in Germany - Tom Kristensen took a couple of big hits and appears to have been medevac'd out to hospital, Alex Premat also involved.  Apparently both drivers were talking to medical staff.

Fingers crossed that both are OK.

Good new, Pieter.  I didn't watch as it's so hot here I've been outside.  LM wouldn't be the same without TK.

Big crash also today at hednesford raceway involving BriSCA Formula 1 star driver Frankie wainman Junior.  Car launched over another cars wheels and landed on the roll cage on the inside armco and then barrel rolled three times and landed on the roof with the driver unconcious. They had to cut the roof off his car but luckily he is ok with bruises and a black eye. But his most successfull car ever is destroyed.

I did manage to get a 8 frame sequence of the accident though ! ;)

Hey Chris, my brother in law went to Hendersford today, a balding bloke called Glyn with his Lad called Bob, did you meet them?
Glad to hear TK is OK.

Being extremely old, I can remember a time when 2 accidents of this magnitude would have produced at least 1 death.  So great that technology and safety improvements mean that  we have come so far that all these guys have suffered from are cuts and bruises.  Tomas Enge was talking yestereday about his return to LM this year.  We moan about the restrictions to the press, public and the teams, but so good that these guys are around to fight another dayl

We watched the replay last night.  Wow, that was some smack TK took.  As said above, it amazes me what is got away with these days.

That's horrible looking - especially from the overhead view.  Lucky indeed...

Update.  TK is back home with this family.  Premat suffered a ruptured lumbar vertabra and will be in hospital for a few more days for observation but there's not thought to be any irreperable damage. :)

The DTM cars are pretty hard. The car has a full roll cage and the driver sits in a safety cell. An accident like this 10 years ago could have been much more serious.

I remember watching Pete Dumbreck wrecking his car in Zandvoort in 2004. Happened right under my nose. Only thing left was the roll cage, but he got out by himself and walked of with the marshalls.

I believe he also had a flying lesson a couple of seconds after he passed us in 1999.  He's had a few adventures that lad - and still in one bit.

Still some doubt over Kristensen being able to compete at Le Mans

While Audi would have enough skilled drivers to compensate Kristensen in a worst case scenario, it would be a huge disappointment for the countless Danish fans as well as the whole event.

I would feel sorry for the Danish :-\

I'm looking forward to the day when DfH have a Marquee as big as the Danish one on Karting Nord.

At the current rate of growth, I would say that this will happen by 2009!  ;D ;D ;D ;D
