Nothing beats the sound of an ( old )  corvette.

The sound of that old two cylinder SAAB straining to the very limits in the support race a few years ago was fun Grin

Ferrari or Alfa flat 12, what a beautiful sound!  I always liked the jungle yell of a DFV, some didn't like it, but the bark & crackle on over-run always made me feel warm & fuzzy all over.

You mean like this one:

I've yet to visit Le Mans but it sure did thunder around Daytona, tho' I preferred the wail of the straight six CSLs:
Alas days of yore...see my sig below...

Probably the most raucous sports car I ever heard was when Herbert Muller raced a Ferrari 512 spyder in the 1974 Can-Am series, I got to see, and hear it at Mid-Ohio.  The sound of that thing powering out of the Keyhole onto the back straight at MO was fantastic.
But probably the most ridiculous sounding racing cars I ever saw in person were the early-mid seventies USAC Dirt Champ cars that used the Ford four cam engine developed for Indy.  The sight & sound of those vicious devices bombing around places like Terre Haute, or the Indiana State Fairgrounds, driven by the likes of AJ Foyt, Mario Andretti, the Unser bros., Johnny Rutherford, Gary Bettenhausen, etc. was something special.  I got to see them many times during that era, including in 1974 when Mario took the USAC title, in his last year on dirt.  The Fords were pure screamers, while the four banger Offy's made more of a ripping fabric sound, a great combination in battle.

Basic rules that seem to work for me are:

The more cylinders the better
Pre-electronics era
Normally aspirated (although superchargers rather than turbos seem ok)

So, anything from a Ford Escort Mk1/2 rally car, through DFVs Amercian V8s, Matra/Ferrari V12s etc up to the BRM V16......

Indeed, mechanical complexity and noise aplenty there!

The H-16's were notorious for the amount of oil they chucked out, it's widely agreed that Mike Parkes '67 Spa shunt was caused by oil coming from the BRM of Sir JYS directly in front of him.

Not meaning to hi-jack the thread, but, was it's only win in the back of Jimmy's Lotus at watkins Glen in '66? I think so....
