Title: Aston Martin / Club Arnage T Shirt Design
Post by: Chris24 on February 13, 2005, 06:37:27 pm
Hello,

Since many of us are going to either Sebring or Le Mans or both, and we are pretty much going to be supporting the Aston Martin team at these events, I decided to work on a T shirt design for these races.

I have now finalized the designs, and have posted a low res version of them below. I have e mailed the full size designs to Jpchenet, who is hopefully going to host them online somewhere so that all Club Arnage members have access to down load the full size images.

The designs have by made so that the proportions are to fit an A4 size sheet of iron on transfer film.  This film is available at PC World for about £10 for 5 sheets, or from Computer Fairs for about £4 for 5 sheets.
Asda sells packs of 2 good quality plain t shirts for £3.50p

I have done three seperate sheet designs, so there is a choice of two designs.

Design 1 uses a single sheet of transfer film for the front and a single sheet for the back print.

Design 2 again uses a single sheet for the back print, but uses the CA logo and Aston logo from the single front sheet, along with the larger car from the second front sheet at the bottom. There is then an extra CA logo and Aston logo left over from the second front sheet, which can then be ironed onto each shoulder of the t shirt.

These are the low res designs, along with a basic sketch of how to lay the designs out on the t shirt, depending on whether you choose the 2 or 3 sheet options.

You should be able to make 4 t shirts with the 3 sheet design, for approximately £19.00p and about an hour using the iron. Thats not bad at £4.75p a shirt now is it.

Go on show your support for Aston Martin at the races this year ?

This is the design for the back print.

This is a sketch of  how to layout the transfer films on the t shirts for each design once printed out on iron on transfer film. Although the proportions are correct, you may still have to alter the overall size when printing to "Fit to paper" in your printer software.

Also don't forget to set your settings to "print mirror image" or "reverse image" otherwise your t shirt design will come out back to front !

Have fun .

Chris and Paddy (I like that one, spare me one each). Shame about Rob Barff not being one of the Aston drivers.... :-\  Nice to see Stephane at the wheel.

Edited: sh*t... big fingers... have the laptop tonight. ::)

No probs my man. Been to the local shirtman today and worked out how/what/where/when. All should even be ready for the 1000km of Spa, the t shirts, the polo shirts and the baseball caps 8)
We'll have an over-production on the shirts and caps, so there will be some spare for face value.

Hey Paddy - reserve me something...a cap or XL t shirt, I don't mind which...

Shame Club Arnage isn't featured in your design though...(did I already say that???)  ;)

Chris and Paddy (I like that one, spare me one each).

HGB,
You're going to have to print your own I am afraid. Thats the general idea. I am not mass producing these, just providing the design for anyone to use.
I am already facing possible problems  just getting the transfers printed out for the 4 shirts that I have to get printed already. My printer ain't working and my dads PC has gone tits up since doing the design on it, so his printer may not be an option either !

I may end up buying a £20 printer, just to do the t shirts on in time.

Let me know if you're really stuck Chris, I can print the transfers and post them to you. I won't volunteer to get and iron shirts for you as I'm crap at it.

I just think the whole idea of the shirts and the logos is great.
Here in the states the corporate lawyers would be on you in a flash.              Pidge

Lawyers are more carefull here. It's our European sport to shoot them in the park during lunch hours :)

Honestly; I made my own logo, I was sent the RfH-logo by themselves last year, and yes, I might just change the LM-logo a little. Into 24 Bieres du Mans or something. I really don't give a flying shag.
Drinking for Holland is a non-profit unorganised bunch of alcoholics, we go to Spa and LeMans to have a good time. Not to make profit out of something that is only used for recognition.
Oh, and I'm gonna tell Heineken to send us flags, otherwise I'm gonna promote Grolsch instead (even though Heineken will be on draught) ;D

Yes, I understand I am not allowed to use somebody else's logo without permission. But there are rules by law for a reason, and there are rules which are just plain pathetic :-\

Thanks Smokie, I will let you know if i am struggling. I will get the transfer paper and could alway post it to you if needed. I would of course re emberse you for the ink costs as it would be 12 A4 sheets worth of printing.

I'm with Pidge on this one.
Whilst I applaud the creativity and effort (though not necessarily the sentiment, in that I'm not sure ALL visitors will be rooting for Aston Martin), I think you are on very dodgey ground, regarding unauthorised use of copyrighted materials, company logos, brandmarks and images.
It has "Unsanctioned Merchandise" written all over it (perhaps you should write that all over them).
Either way, in God's own country - and Sebring is located within that hallowed place - you would definitely get your balls sued off.

You would be right if i was selling them for profit. But I have done the design and made it freely available to anyone who wants to use it.
When all is said and done, I think the Aston Martin team will be greatful to see some fans making an effort to show their support for the team and having some National pride.

There is no law against being creative for your own purpose.

Be interested to know what they would sue for, since I have no money anyway !

could be persuaded to bring a 2xxl with you.Would be willing to trade turn10 VIP passes.Possilbly 1 or 2 lgs. for the turn 10 seniors. ;D ;D

Easy there, Tiger. I'm sure you'll get the full SP, Chris, if you call FoMoCo legal dept and just tell them that you have applied an Aston Martin Lagonda brandmark to a piece of apparel without their permission.

Personally, I don't give a flying fart - and like I said, I admire your creativity, patriotism and enthusiasm, - and I ain't no lawyer, but you have heard of copyright, passing-off, trademark violation, - right?

Just because an image is in the public domain does not mean you have any rights to use it for your own purposes - regardless of the fact that you don't intend to sell it.

It's your call - I was just saying that Pigeon is right as far as US litigious lunacy is concerned. Publish and be damned!

There are legal firms whose entire output is devoted to the area of "intellectual property rights". It's not just a question of money, it's image. FoMoCo may not want to see the Aston logo being sullied by association with Club Arnage and us peasants and our profanities. Rather like the ACO and the now infamous "Commer posters". In 2003 the ACO had a total sense of humour failure and tried to hunt me down. Chris Considine of CA was called in to the office for a bollocking. It was solely because of this that I stuck an A3 Commer poster in the main ACO office window to antagonise them. Whic is why in 2004 Smokie wasn't allowed to show it on the forum and Stu had to host it.

Whilst annoyingly Pidge and Matt are legally correct, it is for this reason I think your Teeshirt idea is great.

Thanks Andy,
Well i guess we may well find out what the Aston Martin lot think, should any of them take up my invite to drop by the Club Arnage camp area if they want a break from work and want to relax and have a few drinks etc.

Also, lets face it, they will have better things to do at Sebring like winning the class and beating Corvettes ass ! They won't have time to chase after me if they don't like the t shirt.

Also since the t shirt isn't going to have my name and address on it, they would have a real hard time trying to trace me anyway.

I might be dreaming mate, but in the immortal words of Kevin Keegan (he was a top British touring car racer in the 70's) "I'd just love it if we beat them, love it!".

He lost.

I was alway under the impression that if you slighty changed the image then it was no longer covered under copy write. The image put out by Aston of the car had 59 on the door, I have changed it to the race nimber they are using at Sebring 58.

The Aston logo came from a recent copy of Nuts magazine

I think it's just dandy as well.
While you're on Chris, can you put an image of the new Jag on there along with the Ford logo. Can I suggest the text: "Sir William Says f**k Off Out Of Coventry, You Twats". And maybe a similar styled flag outside your camp at Sebring.
I had a mate who worked for the copyright dept at Shell. It was his job to scour the worlds literature (pre internet), and the world itself for that matter, for anything that resembled the scalloped "SHELL" logo, and fire off some very unfriendly correspondance indeed. Can you imagine? - some local bloke in a fuel station on a track in the Congo who has a handpainted Shell sign outside, although he is selling filtered bog water, and is half pickled from a lifetime on the local moonshine, gets a threatening letter from the Strand!
Unsurprisingly his strike rate was pretty low, but it kept him off the streets I suppose. Nowadays, I reckon it could be a lot more streamlined and hi tech. The Congo's still the Congo though. (If anyone actually replied to his letters, Shell were onto them like a pack of dogs. Not long haired dachsunds, either)

On the shell story, just how can you expect to complain that someone is using your image, when your image is that of a shell, when the sea if full of them and they can be found on any beach in the world !  Its not like its a well thought out original design. Have they got the copy right on every shell in the sea that looks like their logo ?

No Chris, but they do have copyright on their logo, or anything that loks vaguely like it. In pretty much the same way as Audi don't hold copyright on circles, but they do if they're arranged in a particular way.

To be honest, I can't imagine that there will be teams of eagle eyed lawyers  hired to prowl around the Sebring campsites looking to serve writs there and then on anyone who looks like they may be unlawfully using a representation of their logo. I mean, I often have skid marks that look like the Fiat logo, surely these legal eagles can't be that dedicated? I guess with multiple wearings, a shift in orientation combined with very loose movements, and you too could infringe Audi copyright!

It actually makes me wonder. Just set aside for a moment the people who try to make a living out of copying other people's succesfull stuff.

What happens with a covered song? The original writer gets awarded a sum of money for copyrights. That's because more money will be made from the same song. But what happens in the mean time? The original song will be sold again aswell! So basicly the writer of the original song will be rewarded more than he could hope for, people get reminded because of the cover and start looking for the original.
That last thing could also be an original logo from -for example- the 24 hr logo.
What if the shirt -on which the logo is printed on- is worn on another venue? It might just be free advertisement for the LeMans-venue.

So what are they moaning about? Free f**kin' advertisements!! :o
Yes, someone stole their logo. But he's selling it for them, and giving them the revenue :-\
