Title: Bathurst 1000
Post by: alibongo on October 11, 2006, 11:57:45 pm
Have any of you peeps been to the Bathurst 1000 down under? its a race I've allways wanted to watch live and was thinking of maybe incorporating it in a trip to ozz, is it worth going to see?

Sounds more like a private Lear Jet with only two people attending ;D

It's just one of those races I'd love to go to if I could afford it, Paddy.  After Sebring next year it would complete the fantasy set!

I went to the Birdsville races when I was in Oz.   Makes LM look like a temperance meeting!!

I have pretty firm plans for Bathurst next year. The plan is to get to know some Aussies through internet fan forums and have myself invited to be shown around by the locals.

You've read my thoughts!

Might be a nice alternative since I can't go to Sebring the next two or even three years. But Bathurst is a little more expensive than Sebring I assume. So who knows, I'm in for it. It's exactly in one year right? Enough time to save some(or a lot probably) money.

sounds like a few are interested, is it a bit like L/M i.e a whole weekend gathering of petrol heads/drunks in disguise, anybody know about accomodation nearby, entry costs etc? (must look up where Bathurst is lol)

If I understood correctly from Pieter it's 200% more nuts then Le Mans. For accomodation prices etc you should have a look at the website. I believe tickets are about 40 euros or something. Airplane retour ticket will probably exceed a 1000 euros.

My brother went in the 90's. Said the atmosphere was brilliant especially up the mountain. Some of the people in the campsites even bought their own brick walls to surround their pitches!

Three hours drive I understand.

It will probably take about 3 hours to walk from the bottom start finish straight to the top of Skyline though !

Like some of tou guys I was thinking of going but there seems to be an even bigger yob culture than at Le Mans

http://www.ten-tenths.com/forum/showthread.php?t=89516&page=5

Might just have to go to Petit instead or Spa or go Beaver hunting, after Sebring, if Smokie and Gab have left any ;D ;D

Ive driven round the mountain (it's public road) a couple of times, it's about an hour and a half from my father in laws place. (About 300 kms west of Sydney, over the blue mountains, which are gorgeous.

Definitely a pilgrimage to do. They ran a 24 hour race there a couple of times in the recent past as well, about a fortnight before or after the 1000.

However I have been warned that the racegoers are 'bloody animals' but I've camped in HA, they can't be all that bad.

I think we're planning a family holiday the year after next, and I intend to take in the 1000 or if the timing is out, one of the eastern creek rounds.

Actually, the fact that it's a bit of an unpolished crowd makes me curious. I've read a story in Top Gear Magazine on massive fireworks and throwing burning toilet paper, making impressive light lines in the air but they can also land on your head if you don't watch out. It's an event for the hairy chested, so much is sure.  ;D
