Club Arnage / General Discussion / Re: News from the Centre of the Universe

Just a quick update on works in progress at the circuit. The groundworks for the new paddock area are well underway. There will be a terrace at the bottom of the village area to provide a viewing area into it for the public. 5 extra pits should be up and running for the big race.
The tramway works are on schedule and rails are already appearing at the Antares (circuit) end. This means that if things continue as they should (ie they don't find a cache of unexploded bombs or similar) there should be a tram service from the station to the circuit in time for the race. Will keep you posted as winter goes along.
Tertre Rouge (Stella) bar is unaffected and still open for business.
The tramway works are the best news for me. I come to LeMans on foot and the hike from the station to the circuit, especially carrying my kit and in the usualJune heat, can be pretty wearing sometimes. Looking forward to next year's race already and should definitely be there.

Hi Termie, I've got one you can have, but its in NTSC format. Let me know if interested. Fax
My VCR is dual standard so it plays NTSC and PAL. How much did you want for it?

This is probably a desperate request, seeing as I doubt anyone will give up a cpy, but I'm looking for a copy of the Steve McQueen move 'Le Mans' on VHS.
I've already looked on Amazon and ebay and nowt apppears available.
I'll pay for a decent copy and a fair price as well.

I'll be going on foot from Plymouth, seeing as I live there and the ferryport is only ten minutes away in a cab.
Just sling the bare esential (clothes, tent, chair, sleeping bag) in a rucksack and hop on the train from Morlaix to Le Mans. I'll be there only 4-5 hours after arriving in France.
I can buy whatever else I need when I get there.
And I won't have a long drive or train journey when I get back either. Only costs £105 for a return ticket.

Club Arnage / General Discussion / West Country anyone?

Are there any other folk from the dear old West Country heading for LM 2007 on here?
I'm certainly planning to go from Plymouth, probably on foot so I'll no doubt bump into some of you at the Carrefour while buying anything I forget to take with me (probably a lot).
Just thought I'd ask around.

You people have got to broaden your horizons, live a little!
Are you suggesting that actually switch off our computers, go outside and actually sample real life? I'm shocked. How could you suggest that Club Arnage isn't our whole universe?

Pierre Levegh got close, but the engine let him down. I don't think anyone has ever finished the race driving solo.
Pierre Levegh was an alias, his real name was Pierre Bouillon IIRC. Levegh was an anagram of Velghe, the name of his uncle who competed in early long distance races. Levegh drove for about 23 hours before a crank broke IIRC, it was this level of commitment that got him the drive for Mercedes in 1955. I'd recommend reading 'Managing A Legend: Stirling Mos, Ken Gregory and the British Racing Partnership', pages 154-157 for an account of the 1955 accident. It's written by Robert Edwardes and is well worth reading simply for its own sake. A very good book.

For me it has to be the 1999 Panoz.
1999 was my first trip to La Sarthe. I slept in the grandstand as I didn't have a camping permit, and by the end if the race I could tell without even looking when the Panoz came down the pit straight.
Gut trembling noise.

I'm thinking of heading down to this years 24 Hour Motorcycle race at Le Mans.
What can you fine people tell me, if anything, about the 24 Hour Moto?
For instance, who supplies tickets, what sort of camping facilities are there, howw much will it cost and so on?

I recall Mazda doing pretty well with their rotary engine design, winning Le Mans in 91' (stealing it out from under the noses of Jaguar if I remember correctly).
Be interesting to see what they might come up with for future races.

Yes, I forgot that Ford also own Aston Martin.
Looks like the earliest possible Jag action won't be for several years if at all.
Still, at least we have the DBR9 to cheer on.

With the recent demise of Jaguar's Formula One team, I'm wondering whether Jaguar will ever return to sportscar racing.
Do CAers reckon there is any chance of this?
If so, how long would it be before Jaguar are at Le Mans again?
