Title: The "CA Guide to the 24h of Le Mans 2009" project
Post by: Werner on June 24, 2008, 09:45:27 pm
The camping gear is stored away, the liver has recovered, the 76th edition of the big race is history and so is the CA Guide 2008. I didn't have time yet to analyze the logs but it looks like the no. of downloads was about the same as in 2007. Walking around at Le Mans I saw quite a few people who actually used our guide - so it seems worth to do it.

Time to think about next years edition and as usual I've set up a new project page for this at http://www.clubarnage.com/caguide . I'm sure we will have as many contributions as for the last 3 editions and I'm glad to be able to do this project together with you all - lots of work but also lots of fun, nice mail exchanges, contacts with people I otherwise would never have contact with, it's really a pleasure to work together with all of you.

To those who volunteered to become campsite reporters, please write down your findings as long as your memory is still fresh and mail it together with the pictures to me.

Please use this thread for anything related to the guide, all feedback is highly appreciated.

Cheers

Werner

Hi Werner,

Well done on a top job on this years guide, it was fantastic.

While you lot were at Le mans this year I had an email from a driver who drove at Le Mans in the mid 80's.

I suggested he may like to write a piece for the next guide and seemed very keen. While not a top notch driver, more of a rent a driver from the states, I am sure it could make and interesting piece along the same lines of the Mark Galvin one this year.

Hi Rupert,

perfect. These reports from the other side of the fence are an important part of the guide and make it much more interesting to read. 2007 we had the Stefan Johansson report, for 2008 Peter organized the Mark Galvin report and I hope you can convince him to write for us for next year, so together with the Galvin report part II we would have 2 inside stories then.

Cheers

Werner

Hi Werner

Thinking ahead to the guide for 2010 (how organised am I?????), I'm sure I could persuade Gunnar Jeannette to write something. 2000 was his debut (so it will be the 10th anniversary of that) and that year he finished the race in the dotty Porsche and made history as the youngest ever finisher of the event at just over 18 years old. I was there as team photographer and the weekend was incredible for us when the ailing car went out for those agonising last two laps to make sure we made the minimum number of laps to be classified after an earlier engine problem cost us several hours!

Attached shot is Gunnar celebrating on the pit wall as Michael Lauer brought the car across the line  ;D

[modified to add the shot of the car in the pitlane at night - Gunnar at the wheel]

Hi Rick,

that would be great -  but he doesn't need to wait until 2010 to write something for the CA Guide  :)

Hey Werner

have had a couple of thoughts about the guide

1) Would be nice if someone could add a section linking up the whole Le Mans series - petit, Silverstone, Spa, bikes, veteran etc.
2) Need a bit of editing of "what to take" - in 2008 version there was a big section on pg 70 with a repeat/redundant bit for cars on pg 135.
3) Similarly veggie food was 'covered' on pages 78, 81 & 82
4) Similarly recommend the Navette experience on pg 106 is rationalised with the description on pg 72.
5) Recommend the Ceremony of hands bit on pg 104 needs to go back to somewhere around pg 45.
6) Radio Le Mans (pg 109) should be with Kangaroo TV (pg 103), possibly rationalise with "following the race [from home]" pg 123 and "Where to watch" pg 21
7) Figure the marshals section (pg 118) should be part of a "Following the race" section - cf point 6.

In my sad search for orderliness would also prefer if the chapters & sub-chapters were numbered.

Am happy to help with editing (if after reading the above I haven't disqualified myself) time permitting, and certainly proof-reading.

As more people read the guide year on year, could more be made about behaving at Le Mans in a section.

How about promoting respect to the other fans and their property. There seems to be more and more complaints each year about people throwing large quantities of water into vehicles along with beer and water pistols filled with urine! This mostly happenning if you not take part in spinning your wheels or revving your engine.

Perhaps also promoting looking out for your fellow campers around you, trying to prevent the thefts people seem to still suffer.

I'm sure most club arnage supporters are not in this minority, but if the guide is getting wider coverage then the wider message might be received.

There does seem the opinion that some of the drunken behaviour is getting out of hand in places. There is a line between having fun and yob/thuggish behaviour which seems to be getting crossed.

If the majority of decent people going look down on this behaviour instead of just allowing it to continue then it might just stop happenning.

Here here DKS.  Since my first attendance in 2002 there has been a steady decline.  The disrespect shown to some classic cars around the Houx Annexe roundabout is unbelievable.

What used to be a must attend event on Mad Friday has now turned into, for me and my mates (all 27-30 by the way) anyway, a must NOT attend event.  It can't be long either before one of the cars attempting another poor drift wipes a large part of the crowd out.  Having siad that, maybe that wouldn't be such a bad thing...

Quite right.
There should also be a section that reminds everyone to eat five portions of fruit a day, get regular excercise, make sure there's no dribble marks down their jumpers and that their todgers are properly tucked away before leaving the house.
Avacado bathroom suites should also be frowned upon, and god help anyone who leaves the toilet seat up.

Team Zarse are noted for our consistently high level of fruit consumption at LM (assuming sausages are a fruit), though I'm afraid we fall down rather on the todger tucking away front.

good idea, can i suggest Bob U for crapping in your underpants and showing the deed off, Pig Pen for Piano Burning and Robspot for three piece incineration, i'm sure someone has the recipe for blowing up tents, Slim of Team JPC for being comatose for a week.  Yep CA are well equipped for giving out a standard.
I would post pics of all the above mentioned acts.... but that would give the wrong impression to everyone.
Could I also add that the red velour sofa was mine... as was the Piano and if you look in a previous thread "Fire" there are other images of good conduct. ;D

Hi there

Girls & guys, I need some support: Regular readers of our CA Guide know the chapter "weblinks" at the end of the guide, 3 pages full of links to team websites, drivers, racetracks and other. Today I followed the Team Goh link and found that this domain is now owned by something what looks like a japanese chinaware factory ;D

Could someone of you take the herculean task to check all these links and see if they are still valid, remove the ones which aren't valid any more and probably add a few new ones - but not exceed the 3 page limit ...?

I would need your e-mail-adress and would send you this chapter as a word-file, so you can edit your changes directly in there. Deadline for this job would be in 3 weeks time from now on, say May 18th 2009, and you will of course be credited for it in the guide :)

Cheers

Werner

I can actually do that ;D

Request for help: I think the new "Formula Le Mans" deserves a mention in the 2009 CA Guide. Could someone write a short chapter (1 page, max 2 pages is enough) about this new formula, the idea behind it, specs of the car and all that stuff -  I think it's all somewhere on the web. I think Termie has probably some pictuers of these cars from her visit at the Bugatti Test day.

Edit: This is solved, Bas will write something!

Cheers, nice weekend everybody

another request for help: Last years CA Guide had a 1-page chapter for those who had to stay at home with a summary of TV, Radio and Internet Le Mans coverage. Could someone please compile a similar page for this year and mail it to me so I can publish it in the Guide? EDIT 5th May:: This will be done by Nickliv now

Hi Werner

Quick question (?).  It says on the project page that "The 2009 edition of the CA Le Mans Guide will be ready for download here on Tuesday after the test day 2009 somewhen late evening!"

However I cannot find the date of the test day - apart from those in March & April.

Do you know yet when the guide will be published?

Kind regards and keep up the great work!

The "Lord Steve and AJW do Le Mans by public transport on the cheap" (Subtitled - thanks for the support Bas) article has gone into production and will be ready for the 2010 Edition. I was wondering if there's anything worth submitting for this year's edition but there probably isn't anything worth putting in unless you want a preamble.

For the last 4 years I've been camping at 'Campsite Mulsanne' and the last guide said if anyone stays there then please let us know how it was.  Well here I am!

As it says, it's a very long way away from the main village but there are some plus's and minus!

+ points
There's no allocated spaces for camping so stop where ever you feel like (good if you get there early)
There is a large mound right up in the corner of the race track which is higher than the fence so if you are into your photography it's a good spot.
Usually rip off burger/beer stall.
Newspaper stand for the local french rag.
Near some cracking boozers and restaurants possible quieter than others due to it be farther out.
Perhaps not as many pickeys as other site and it's remote
Cheeeeeeep.  29 euro's per tent! bargain... I'll take three.
Friendly atmos!! urrr...

- points
Can get busy and disorganised camp site as you can pitch where you want (get there early!)
Toilet's: 1 mens with 1 poo house and 2 urinals.  1 women's with 3 poo houses, 1 shower unit!!!  6-8 spaces with hot water!!!!!!!!! (not till Thursday though)
Noisy - (isn't it every where?)
No power points.
1 tap in the site!! (yes, just the one but just drink beer)

T-5 and counting down... - Tuesday is D-day (Delivery day) ;D. It looks good - we will get our act together again with the guide. It will be app. 140 pages - about the same volume it had last year.

The quality of the entry list pics is good, but will not have the very high standard as it had in the last year - because we lost the test day as an opportunity to take pics of all cars already in their LM livery. E.g. I've no idea what the JLOC Lambo will look like, so I just had to take a pic of their 2007 entry...

Drivers list also still has some TBA's - seems like a lot of deals are last-minute this year.

I've taken off for Monday so expect the guide to be raedy for download on Tuesday not too late

Cheers, just opening another cold one

Werner
