Title: How to keep beer cold?
Post by: Robspot on January 26, 2005, 10:22:20 am
Hi again

I'm travelling down in my Golf R32 which has about as much room as a badgers arse so there's no chance of fitting a generator or fridge of any sort in it.

Does anyone have any wonderful ideas about how to chill beer or at least how to keep it cold if bought from the local offie.

Rob

The only way apart from a fridge we have found is to buy either ice or frozen Veg from the hyper market. In a cool bag this keeps drinks cold for about 12 hours.

Up untill we started using Houx and taking a proper fridge, we cooled our beer by taking a cylinder of Nitrogen, which we would bubble through a bucket of water containing the beer (or wine). Very effective technique. ;)

Don't forget, if you took a gas powered camping fridge, you can always pack stuff in it for the journey, so it would not take up too much extra room.

I'm sure I read on here a couple of years ago that storing your beer in some water in a larger container with a wet towel of some sort draped around it will help keep things cool. The evaporation of the water from the towel draws the heat out of the container it's wrapped around apparently. Not sure if it actually helps if it's kept in the sun to speed the evaporation process... I dare say there's some more technically correct explanation out there somewhere...

Not tried it though... we have an electiric fridge from a generator... under the work top, next to the sink and cooker...  ::)

Russ is right about the wet towel. Buy plenty of ice to take too.

I've used the 'bucket fridge', and yes it works, but it's better to leave it out of the direct sunlight, preferably in a draft to help with the evaporation.  The warmth of the sunlight will reduce the cooling effect.

You could also try a blast of a CO2 extinguisher....

I find the best plan is to drink it, rather then look at/admire etc, then buy more. If you have any problems please give us a call. Huddersfield team bottom end of MB

I've had success in recent years but making blocks of ice at home using large zip-lock freezer bags full of water.  Stick these in a couple of coolboxes and they last for 3 to 4 days.  This is good enough to keep enough beer cold for half a dozen blokes drinking at a moderate pace.

A tip I got from this forum was also to freeze orange juice cartons, they work like ice blocks.  They melt quicker than the water and can be drunk afterwards.

This year I have bought an ice maker from ebay and a generator to power it, so should be able to top-up my ice collection each day.  Just need to find an extra large coolbox....

I shall be in Beausejour, and I don't think the ice machine has enough capacity to be able to be giving any away, it'll make a kilo of cubes in an hour, so we'll probably be using that much for our own party, unfortunately. :(

If it works out better than expected, maybe next year....

I'm really not sure how to handle this. I have been accused of being somewhat obtuse in these hollowed columns from time to time - and if your name really is Guy Humpage, I apologise if my comments are hurtful to you. That said, I think this must be a smutty alias, because no youth could have survived school with such nomclementure. Said youth would have been either beaten to a bloody pulp or commited suicide - unable to tolerate the sniggering jibes of his peers (i.e. people like me).
I'm hoping this is a kind of "Andy Zarse" play on words, but if it isn't it's the best f**k*ng name I've heard since I was introduced to a bloke called Warren Orgon (this IS true).

I remember dealing with a complaint from a customer at my previous employ at a bank by the name of Mr Robert Soul.

How I enjoyed ringing him back and asking to speak to him.

Are, the delights of going to school in Hounslow. Not double entendres but the class of '83 included:

Toerag Peratian
Dotun Ollibodun (his brother Valentine was in the year above us)
Gotom Bizwas
Aerial Molave

We also had a Mr Charles Lion as a teacher and a Miss Green who even after a year didn't understand why we called her Theresa.

The investigating officer was interviewed on tv. His name was Roger Boys!

The tv presenter Stuart Hall, formed a travel company in the 80's and named it.
Stuart Hall International Travel, you can imagine the shock when all the stationary arrived from the printers with the heading S.H.I.T.
Whoops.

I live in that area and passed such a coach this very morning on the way to work... I think the owner's first initial is 'R', but I didn't see it on the back. He also ownes a Rover dealership in Olney...make of that what you will!!

I did some work for a London local authority once and they had somebody on their books called Shona Twatt... Oh how I laughed!!!  ;D

During the recent floods up north, I caught in interview on telly with a local vicar who had the honour of being called Rev Bill Ankers.

At work we deal with a guy called Patrick Ennis from time to time.

Many years ago, I new a DJ called Paul Ennis.

A girl at schoo had the unfortunate name of Rosanna Hoare. No problem, you would, she'll get married one day. She moved to Aus and married a guy with a surname of Hussy.

You think that would have been the first question she asked!

We manage to get down to LeMans in a MGBGT with all the gear. THe MGB GT makes the Golf R32 look as roomy as a bus! so space is a premium. We have tried the bucket technique, but if you havent go much shade it can be ineffective.

What we have done for this year is to make a box out of 3 ply and inside attach the material they use for insulation for Fridges (No.. not asbestos!!). The door can be sealled with wignut screws to keep it airtight. Then that can be put in the MG and filled with gear, then once in LeMans buy some Ice from the Supermarket, put your food and beer in it and it will keep cold for ages!!.

Hi Andy,

yes, we'll be on Expo again this year, arriving Thursday evening. If you can make it there, yes, there's a cold beer waiting for you then (or two, or three...). I'm sure we'll meet also at Champaign-Bar on saturday???

Any other CA Forum members on campoing on Expo?

Visited CostCo this weekend and picked up the mother of all coolboxes.  It's an Igloo Maxcold 100-litres, which claims to keep ice frozen for 5 days,
comes with a separate tray hanging from the top to stick non-beer items and a drainage tap in the base to get rid of surplus water.

A bargain at c.£50, about half what internet sellers are asking for it.

I saw these in the states last year. They claimed to keep the ice for 5 days in heats of 90 degrees F. They also did some with wheels at one end and a pull along handle.

After a number of years faffing around with electric cold boxes I've bought a three way fridge, we'll run it on the mains before we leave to get it cold and then run it on gas whenwe get there

It cost around £140 and it looks pretty good.   Sooo at least we'll have cold beer this year! ;D ;D

Just to veer back off topic, I used to play cricket with a large Trinidadian guy called Rick Blackman.

As for the cooling of the beer, last year we pitched a tent just for beer and wine, if we can find the space (difficult with S2000's, TVR's and 350z's) then we might pick up a Costco cool box.

I was with the group near the track with the Pug 206 & MG ZR that enjoyed your "driving skills" on Sunday evening....  ;)

We tend to find the boot of my ZR does a sterling kept the beer fairly cool, just dunk it in some cold water in the morning & it stays cold(ish) for most of the day!!!

Do CostCo have any smaller ones?

The grand plan for this year is to carry the Sprite's spare wheel on the natty new boot rack I've acquired.  This will more or less double (I kid you not) our boot space and a little cooled storage would be great.  I guess I'm looking for something about the size of one of those mini fridges or maybe a bit bigger but top instead of front loading.

Anyone know where I can get something like that at a keen price?

Well this is my cold beer problem solved.  I'm on Expo as well so will wander along and drink yours!

By the way I have a Electrolux gas fridge but somehow its got broken.  The hinges are broken, anyone know where one can get it repaired or is it the scrapyard for it?  Having said that I assume gravity will keep it shut, so it should work ok anyway, just be more difficult to open.

I just bought a three year old Hotpoint freezer off eBay for £26. I went to collect it last night and told the woman what I wanted it for, i.e. cool beer at Le Mans. She replied that this was the first time she had heard anyone speak about Le mans in years. She went on to tell me about when she was a teenager backpacking in Europe in 1960's with a friend. They were just north of Le mans and hitching a lift. A vintage sportscar (thinks it might have been a Bentley) stopped and offered them a ride. The driver turned out to be non other than John Frankenheimer, the director of the film Grand Prix, later Ronin and French Connection II. By all accounts he was a great bloke and when they all missed the ferry he put them up for the night in a hotel. Apparently there was no monkey business either before you ask! He was a bit miffed when the girl hung her rucksack off one of the vintage car's headlights!  :-[
