Title: Dear Holland
Post by: Robspot on October 18, 2007, 01:54:01 pm
Following the latest pathetic attempt at football by the England muppets we are now facing the very real possibility of not qualifying for Euro 2008 which will leave a massive dilemma for next year - who to support?

Having discussed this with my travelling colleague we have come to the obvious conclusion - Holland.

I would therefore like to submit our application to become honorary Holland supporters for the duration of Le Mans 2008. And besides, I like orange!

With that shirt there's no contest - Holland it is.  Can't we just support Holland anyway whether England qualify or not  ;) ?

Do they do it in a V-neck?

You are all most welcome as honorary Holland supporters.

The thing that pisses me off is that they are still using our DFH lion in the dutch football association logo, tossers  >:( ;D

We could actually make a CA shirt that looks the same as the football shirt. We'll make a special one with V-neck for Fran ;)

Depends on how deep the v-neck should be.... ;)

Means: Koninklijke Nederlandse Voetbal Bond, or Royal Dutch football association!

Or as marius says ;D Take your pick!

Best we all learn some Dutch then......
Would be rude to shout at the TV in the wrong language!

Babel fish translation throws up the following as, arguably, the most handy phrase - "Gelieve te kunnen ik een bier hebben".  No idea whether the translation is correct or not and, although every word except one is totally unrecognisable, the important one is recognisable - bier.

Throat exercises to get in shape for forming those syllables might be advisable too.  40 fags a day should do it.

Oh, and as per earlier, Holland got my vote anyway....

If you can pronounce that sentence, I would be utterly impressed ;D

A far better and easier translation is this: Een biertje asjeblieft!

Good luck on smoking those 2 packs a day, I will check in Le Mans if it did the job ;D

In the past, a few years spent in the depths of the pine forest (when it had aircraft) just over the border from Roermond taught me very quickly that pronunciation of the Dutch language bears little or no resemblence to how it is written.  And it was always frustrating that, as soon as you started saying something simple like "Good Morning" in Dutch, the reply always came back in english....so, the challenge is going to be to learn some useful phrases again, as most of them have all slipped from the memory.  The bigger challenge will to remember them when pi**ed at the DfH party....

My brother in law has given up learning Dutch, it was very frustrating for him going to a bakery asking '1 broad alsjtoeblieft' and getting answered back in English. No way he could learn that way.

Which makes me wonder, if someome entered the bakery and ordered in Dutch with a thick German or French accent, would the baker also answer in the motherlanguage of the one who ordered. ;D

No worries Mark, we're not Polish ;D "Bier graag" will do, or "asjeblieft" like Knetter says ;)

And if for some reason you find that the bar attendee is of the female sexe, just say as loud as is humanly possible: BIER, TRUT!

Fran,

I think you might be being overly sensitive.  Can't see the problem with that - "Trut" in Dutch translates via babelfish into "Trut" in English.  Whatever that means.  Perhaps those in Rotterdam this weekend would be kind enough to try it out on a Dutch barmaid, and report back whether it received a warm welcome and lots of free beer, or a slapping, or being thrown out of the establishment?    ;) ;D

Trut is more like 'stupid cow', so I wouldn't push my luck on that one ;)

Besides, it wouldn't surprise me at all if the people behind the bar are British or Irish ;D

If said in a joyous tone, the first would apply, if said in a rather iritating tone the latter. Babblefish does not know that trut in dutch means biatch in English ;D

Because I'm a Taffy sheepshager, I've been supporting our Dutch friends for quite a while.

Ah...so, the (unsurprising) truth is out..... ;D  Mind you, I am beginning to think that Babelfish is not all it's cracked up to be.  It tells me that words like twat, pillock and bollock are the same in Dutch as in English...... ;)

Every cloud has a silver lining Roy.  In this case, two.

1:  The Brits get to support the Dutch next year.   ;D
2:  Steve McLaren got the bullet.   ;D ;D ;D

If it helps, I went to Wembley on Wednesday.

Not only were England absolutely Dire, Not Only did it cost me £40 for a flaming ticket to that shower, and not only did croatia score 10 mins from time,

But...

At 9:45 there was a torrential rain storm, which seemingly followed me and my motorcycle, all the way back to Reading...Rivers of water on the M4, lack of street lighting between jct 8/9 and Jct 10, all made for a very wet miserable ride home too...

However...the best story I heard came from the tube of all places.  A stopped tube's driver announced that the reason that his train was stopped was because there was a person on the line.  He went on to explain that he would be moving on as soon as they can work out whether it was Steve McLaren or not....

:)

We will need all the support we can get: we're in a group with France, Italy and Romania! That'll be interesting. We're playing France June 13th....probably to be seen at Maison Orange.

That's not true. For one, you're not playing everybody and you can definitely get away with a draw here and there. In 1988 we even lost the first game.
