Title: Creation Autosport Documentary
Post by: pretzel on November 16, 2005, 09:27:10 am
Just noticed that the documentary that Powermite mentioned a few months back (see thread http://www.clubarnage.com/forum/index.php?topic=3309.msg38258#msg38258) is about to be broadcast on the Discovery Channel. It follows Creation Autosport's build up to, and participation in Le Mans 2005.

According to the TV listing it is 3 x 1 hour programmes starting next Monday (21st November) at 20:00pm, entitled 'The Road to Le Mans'.  So for anyone interested here is advance notice of the broadcast.

Unfortunately I do not have Discovery so will not be able to see it. Is there anyone out there who would be willing to record this to DVD and let me have a copy. I would be happy to reimburse with replacement media, postage etc. as well as stumping up for some beers at next year's event.

Here's hoping.....

I can save it on Sky+ and then copy it to video for you Pretzel but don't have the facilities to copy it to DVD I'm afraid. Or am I right in thinking you have done away with your VCR now? If so, maybe someone can copy VCR to DVD?

JPC,

I haven't quite ditched the VCR, but only use it occasionally to record older films on to DVD, so your offer of a video (unless it's Betamax  ;) ) would be fine. I could then copy it myself on to DVD. I would then be happy to return the video, and make further DVD copies should anyone else want one.

Paddy_NL-  if you're not successful let me know and I can create copies of JPC's video and ship it to you and Gilles.

I've set it up to record the first one and set it on series link. Unless anyone else does it straight to DVD I'll copy them once they are all shown and post the video up to you.  :)

Okay - I'll let you know. We do have a DVD Recorder, but it a Phillips.
Recently replaced as the "old one" wasn't reparable within it's guarantee period of 12 months, not too high hopes for this brand I'm afraid :-\

I'll try to remember to record it to DVD and can make copies. Unfortunately the TiVo is busy that day :-)

However I'd warn at this stage that I've been copying movies for my daughters and I sometimes seem to be burning coasters...they work all right on my PC and on my home theatre but not in their integral DVDs.

Err...will also check whether I have Discovery. Pretty sure I have, either through Freeview or cable.

My plans are scuppered already. TiVo is scheduled to record the Shakespeare thing for daughter who is doing English A level. Therefore DVD is going to record University Challenge. I only have two recording devices - no VHS.

Over to you then, Bob! :)

(If you want to record it and send me one I can do some copying/distribution - coasters not guaranteed!)

No probs Smokie, One copy to you for duplication and distribution. Will you be able to moderate out  the ad breaks out cos I am not that technically minded?

Title: Re: Creation Autosport Documentary
Post by: smokie on November 17, 2005, 12:17:34 pm
Yep I can edit out ads.

There is a small window of opportunity here too. I've just used DigiGuide to check the programme, and it is being repeated in the middle of the night. There appear to be three episodes at "normal" times and 6 either at 11:00 or 05:00. I'll attempt to record these just in case.

Title: Re: Creation Autosport Documentary
Post by: Bob U on November 21, 2005, 11:41:54 pm
The first programme is recorded onto DVD, I will be able to get all 3 onto one disc and will send to Smokie to get his moderating stick to work on the ad breaks. It can then be copied and sent to anyone who can't get to watch it. Judging by the first it will be a great insight into a race teams preperation for Le Mans

Title: Re: Creation Autosport Documentary
Post by: smokie on November 23, 2005, 12:00:34 am
I'm not sure that there aren't more than 3 programmes in the series. It's definitely repeated in the middle of the night on Sky Discovery but not on NTL analogue Discovery. Program guide I have indicates this runs well into December but it isn't clear if these are repeats or not.

Can someone advise whether I am best copying this to DVD+R or DVD-R for maximum compatability?

Form a orderley queue - pm me with your name & address if you want a copy. If there are lots 'n' lots I may ask for help!

Title: Re: Creation Autosport Documentary
Post by: Bob U on November 23, 2005, 11:13:00 am
As far as I can make out, the Monday showing is in 3 x 1 hour programmes while the repeats are in 6 x 1/2 hour slots.

I use DVD+R for a one off copy or DVD+RW for re use, both work fine

Smokie,

Most off the shelf cheapo DVD players are DVD-R so I would have thought that would be the most compatible. Recorders and PC based DVD kit can normally deal with more variants of the format.

I'll take a copy from you in whatever format you opt for. If you get loads of requests I'd be happy to help out on the copying and distribution front.

I'll PM my details.

I concur with Bob U on the programme details. 3 x 1 hour Mondays - 6 x 0.5 hour repeats.

Got the DVD today.

What I haven't got is the video editing software I thought I had...  ::) The stuff I have edits mpegs not DVDs. My cracked copy of the Adobe product seems to have expired.  :-\

I'll work with it for a day or two (if I get time) and try to do something with it. If I fail, and there are no other volunteers who can edit it, I will make copies as it stands and send out as requested...

I[ve now downloaded sometyhing that (I'm hoping) will read the DVD to an mpg which I can then edit and stufdf back onto DVD. Anyone know if this is likely to cause quality problems?

Conversion has begun, over 5 hours remaining...

Sorry about this just a tad off topic

i am thinking of buying a dvd recorder, i already have a camcorder which i then upload on to the pc and edit and make films, are you able to import the recorded items in to this kind of package? i cant import purchased dvds in i just wondered if recorded ones would. is this the kind of problem you have now hit smokie?

Ummmm...

I am trying to edit a DVD which Bob has recorded from TV, presumably on a DVD recorder. I guess I'm reverse engineering it into an editable format (mpg), as I don't think .vob files (for that's what they are) are editable, or at least I don't know of a package that does it. This isn't a specialist area of mine!

I can then author it back to being a standard DVD format (vob) and write new discs.

(There are products which allow you to de-protect and de-regionalise purchased DVDs btw). I may have used one in the past  ;).  It was good as you could strip out the menus and trailers, and shrink the remaining film to a standard DVD without significant loss of quality).

Smokie,

If you have any more problems and provided it is the right format I can edit out the ad breaks and trailers on my DVD recorder, like I did on the Audi DVD I did earlier this year then re-record the results for distribution.

Just something I dragged down this morning - an eval version of Magic DVD Ripper.

Seems to have done the trick - I now have 6 large mpg's and 2 small ones. At a glance, quality looks OK on PC screen....

I have a program to join them somewhere. Then I can edit.

I hope no-one was in a rush for this :)

"Other commitments" are getting in the way but I'm hoping to get this done soon.

I've converted it to mpg but editing is tediously slow. I'm assuming it's grabbed the episodes in the right order...

OK I finished the Edit but I'm burning about 50% or more coasters. They work fine in my PC but not in the DVD players. These are cheap DVD-Rs, I've tried more than one type, and more than one PC/burner.

I have ordered some specially expensive disks (should arrive on Tuesday) so hopefully wil have more success with these.

Smokie you are an absolute star - I've only been home 20 minutes and we've got the DVD on already  ;D

Have I missed the post that said how much we need to pay you, this must have taken you ages plus the cost of the DVD's and the postage?

As an aside - the DVD won't play in our Samsung DVD (cheap) DVD recorder but will pay in the older (more expensive) Panasonic.  So if anyone is struggling, play in on something a bit more classy  ;D

Cost is nil, all part of the service. Though if I get many more requests the price may go up!!  ;D

I tested all of them in my Panny (which is a bit choosy) and they were OK. The persistent problems I was having before must have been due to cheap blanks. However if anyone is having problems let me know and I can do another...

Phil,

DVD's can be either PAL or NTSC (well they can on my DVD recorder anyway). If you think you will need NTSC then I MAY be able to re-record it in that broadcast format. Let me know if that's what you need and I will check.

Gary, the whole DVD was recorded from 3 one hour programmes. These included race prep and testing, Spa race and Le Mans prep and race. Once Smokie had edited out the ad breaks the whole thing lasts about 2 1/4 hours

Pretzel, wise man to decline Gary's offer of a snog. you should see the almost legendary outfit he normally wears for these events.

No Gary I won't tell, honest. Not even if Pretzel offers me a copy of the programme too.

But Pretzel, if you could spare a copy I would just love it thanks, please... Save me having to borrow Gary's

Oh Gary, at the MG Spares day Mark and I took a photo of Stuart's V84WD Midge showing panel gaps to make you feel much better. I'll email the picture to you. ;)

Looks like I'll have a couple of disks pretty soon judging by Gary's message above. Send me your details and I'll copy and send the same day as the blanks are received.
