a fish eye lens to

Funnily enough I was talking to someone just last night recommending them to get a fish eye so they can fit themselves head to toe on a webcam.... we decided on reflection that with the fish eye distortion it could either appear very flattering, or simply create the impression of a gigantic beer belly!!  ;D

Perhaps I am veering into a whole other kind of forum.... time to belt up!

Kev are you saying you want a digi SLR?  You've got a typo in your post...

I'd imagine you'll be looking at second hand at that price?  Where do you live I can put you in touch with a chap in London.

Buying a digital SLR is one thing, but you'll need a hell of a lot more money to buy a decent fish eye lens. But a little more than 200 pounds should be enough to buy a nice 'beginner' digi SLR like those from Canon or maybe even Nikon. There are also the camera's that are basically pocket cameras but are really close to SLR's when it comes to functions and lens. They do not have the ability to change lenses though.

Take a look at http://www.dpreview.com for lots of information on camera's :)

Local camera shop for advice is:

Camera Solutions Ltd • 18 Frodsham Street
Chester • Cheshire • CH1 3JL

Tel: 01244 40 35 40
Fax: 01244 40 36 25

They seem ok when I brought my camera, and I got a good deal, cost me a touch more than a London shop (Park Cameras - who are good as well - so I'am told). But the bit extra is good if you have any problems on need other stuff.

If you know what you want and it's a Canon, look at this

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Canon-Outlet_W0QQssPageNameZstrkQ3amefsQ3amesstQQtZkm

Canon Uk web store, goes thru ebay.

Found this after I brought my Nikon.

Found some other interesting pages for you:

http://bobatkins.com/photography/learning.html
http://bobatkins.com/photography/reviews/fisheye.html
http://photonotes.org/reviews/zenitar-fisheye/

Also, you could look for a fish eye adapter. They are much cheaper than an actual lens, but ofcourse the quality of the shots is not as good. They seem OK for playing around though, and usable on a camera with a fixed lens that has a filter tread :)

I forgot to mention in my previous post that you shouldn't just be looking at a camera, but also at the prices for memory cards and extra batteries. Although often you can buy a 'starters package' that contains not only the camera but also an extra battery, a memory card and a camera bag.

Kev,

Welcome to the canon club!

just a thought, worth asking the ebay seller if there is a balance of the warranty left on the camera.

For extra bits and bobs..memory chips etc; my memory is a good web site site to use ;)

Read the Canon ebay shop site, damaged goods, can be the box, of ex-demo or ex-display.

They also quote

Additional Shop Information
The customer is entitled to return the product (for any reason) for refund within 7 calendar days after receipt of the product.

Seems a good place to look and there stock changes often. Have a good rating as well

2GB cards are fine (get a couple though).  My Memory prices are very competitive, I normally buy from them.  Sandisk, Kingston are both good cards.

As to the camera, definately BLACK

Standard memory card would fit I assume as I cant see anything in the technical spec………… Black is the correct choice.

Kev, assuming you going with a Canon 350D, you'll need compact flash cards.

see here - http://www.mymemory.co.uk/compatible-memory/Digital_Cameras/Canon/Canon_EOS_350D (http://www.mymemory.co.uk/compatible-memory/Digital_Cameras/Canon/Canon_EOS_350D)

Sandisk Ultra II and Extreme III are good (and cheap now)

Kingston and Lexar are also well regarded brands.

Compact Flash is great. It's relatively cheap and not easily destroyed. Also, because it is not dependent on a controller inside the camera, there is no limit to the memorysize of the card you can use in any given camera.

For the camera: black is good. Silver looks stupid and cheap, it's like a dinky-toy camera  :-X

I would not have any other make of camera other than Canon, I bought a digital Canon on holiday in Lanzarote some five years ago, just before Christmas this year the display screen went, It was sent off for repair,  I was informed that the parts was not available, Canon, replaced the camera with a brand new one, as they had found that a lot of the display screens on my model had been found to be defective.
so now they have a customer for life.

I got my camera from there! I got a 30D for £455, about the same price as a 400D would be in the shops!!

The box was a little creased, but the equipment is pristine!

They start the price’s off at £130 ish and you put that as your bid but as there all 1 day listings they bump the bids up to around the £180-190 mark so that’s what you pay IF you bid again.

The card payments are made via a secure site :) just see when the one ive bidded on bloody ends!

Kev, do you know what these cost in normal stores? A 400D with the 18-55 lens has a going price of 609 euro's over here. The highest up 400D at this time on the site is 280 quid, which makes 355 euro's. If you think that is to much because it's 'refurbished', go buy a ccamera somewhere else.

I'll be very happy with a 350D+18-55 for the 200 quid they went for today, even if it's in silver. ;)

Also, there's the thing with last second bidders, they wait till the very last second to place their bid, thus leaving others without the possibility of bidding higher. You can try that yourself as well, just wait till the bidding is almost over, see what the highest bid is and decide if you want to go any higher. Or, alternatively, you can put in a maximum bid and then autobid. Whenever a bid is placed, you will automatically raise your bid. Until someone decides to bid more than your maximum bid (wich they cannot see beforehand) then you are out of the game.

Example: if you start an automatic bid to a maximum of 200, and the lowest possible bid is 130, then 130 will be your bid. If someone comes along and bids 140, your bid will be automatically raised to 150. Maybe this person tries again and bids 160. Your new bid will then be 170. If nobody bids more than 170 you win the auction with a bid of 170, and you won't have to pay your set maximum of 200. Try not to accidentally place a 'normal' bid of 200, if that wins the auction, that's the money you will have to pay regardless of other bids.

Just keep watching, this site shifts a lot of camera's

The one you want will come up, set your price  (max) you want to pay, bid slowly and wait. If you miss it, another one will come up.

As for referb cond, - look on the site to see a description.

Like I said I may buy a video camera from this site, depends on the cash. As I have just signed up a college and need to buy a special megger meter, so thats a £1000 spoke for already!

Oh yes.... thats my favourite trick - sometimes I actually win - most often I forget I am watching and it ends before I actually bid at all  ::)

I got a camera from them a few years ago. I think they are called digital river and are just selling the returns and older models they buy in baulk from Canon.

If its the same people my camera was brand new and the box was sealed and has been perfect. I got a printer of them as well last year and that was also brand new.

Like you I bid a few before I got one. just watch, say the next 5 that come up, and see what price they go for. If thats within you range then put you maxium bid at that level. Even if someone trys to snipe it in the last seconds it will go to the highest bidder.

When you win you then go thru to a page that takes your payment, I just put in the credit card number. the camera arrived a few days later and could be tracked durning shipment as well.

Kev,

Go for a collaspable manfrotto monopod, £13.99 from MyMemory.co.uk, very light and also acts as a hold me up stick in the early hours at LM.

Lens filters are just a few quid, I have a UV filter on both lenses.
