They can keep their snails and frog legs,
They make a big fuss about the quisine, but most of it you'd want to wipe of your shoe quickly if you stood on it. - Oysters - salty snot, and all these things made out of duck fat, or fat ducks.  Tripe sausages.  And then there's horsemeat.  I could go on but I've just eaten (rostbif!)

The Red Arrows have just flown over central London, leaving a trail of Red, White and Blue smoke.  Isn't this the Tricoleur?  Shouldn't they be told?

Congratulations London, to right, it is a brilliant achievement, looking forward to it already. As for Chirac, how do you think he likes his Humble Pie????

Well done Seb Coe and the team. Hopefully it will be a massive boost for East London and other area that it will be affected.

Should mean plenty of spending on leisure centers etc in the south east. Good news for me.

Just got to decide what sport I am best suited to and start the training.

its great news for london. not only does it mean that all the money spent campaigning hasnt been wasted on a failed bid, it also means poorer areas of london can be regenerated and a new focus can be placed on developing london into one of the most attractive destinations to visit worldwide. you would at least hope that this bid means transport and facilities across london will be dramatically improved over the next 7 years

Congrats to you Londoners, well done.  Hope the dollar/pound exchange is a little more favorable by then so we can afford to attend.

Fair Play is an Olympic Value...
... don't let me think you deserve the attribution of the Games to your country !!!! :(

not really fair play to tell such things concerning a defeated competitor...
... and so definitely not an Olympic value !!!  >:(

be proud for your victory not the loose of your "enemy" !!!  :-\

Good point Gilles I agree. I know how disappointed I would have been had we lost, and it was very close.

BTW as long as GT Race isn't an olympic sport, I don't care having Summer Olympic games in France  ;)

Gilles sorry if I offended you with my little comment about Mr Chirac, it's just that his comments made about British food yesterday were just a bit too strong IMHO

Chriac's comments were made off-mic to some of his work buddies.  Remember when John Major made a comment about the "bastards" in his cabinet ?  We all make dodgy comments or jokes about the odd person at functions/parties.  :D

For that I cannot loathe Chirac.  However, his instant jumping on the rebate bandwagon the moment he lost the referendum was completely pathetic  ::)

I love France and Le Mans, I just want to see the clip where the French find out they've lost  ;D

Chirac’s comments may not have been intended for broadcast but are obviously his true thoughts and mind set. He is just one man, just in the wrong job, like you, been to France many times and never had a bad time always met with good people - but not politicians.
Sorry Giles, maybe lots of you guys will come over for some English hospitality.

Does this mean that the Marathon will now consist of stumbling from pub to pub, being thrown into the street at closing time and then crossing the finish line with a arm full of beer from the off-license and kabobs from an all night Paki diner.

I don't know Fax, but the Olympics in Londontown will let us Brits do what we do best. I don't mean marching bands and pomp and circumstance, I mean getting a right old lash on.

I for one wasn't to keen to start with, there will be terrible rows over the construction of facilities and the general politics of putting the event together, you mark my words. It will bore the arses off us for years to come. But on the plus side, I would love to see Chirac's face when he heard the news. I love France and feel very sorry for the Parisiens, even if they are the rudest people on earth. But boy does that man Jacque take the cookie or what!

My post was mostly tongue & cheek with a bit of coming to Gilles defense thrown in.  ;)  On the serious side, hope you guys don't lose your asses on this like every other Olympic city does.  I think Atlanta's still paying for the '06 games.

AFAIK, Montreal was almost bankrupt after the 1976 games.

Hey Andy,
I think you pretty well hit it on the screws.  No doubt about it, its going to be one hell of a party when 2012 gets here and I'm happy for you guys getting it.  But I had friends and family who lived and worked in Atlanta during the years leading up to the 1996 games and they all said it got to be a gigantic pain-in-the-ass.  The bickering over venues, rights, revenue, etc. all turned into a organizational nightmare.

Is Circle lining a new Olympic discipline then ? I'll be prepared to defend the German honour.

Amazing, The bid team really deserved the result with most being top athletes and sporstman that canvassed the vote. This will really focus a lot of activity for a fantastic event....Ian

<sarcastic mode on> Surely it was the mere presence of David Beckham and Posh in Singapore that swung it? <sarcastic mode off>

Seriously, I agree that the bid team are to be congratulated on this fine result for London and the UK. Much as I hate to admit it I even Blair deserves some kudos from the comments I have heard on various news programmes where IOC members commented on the comittment and sheer persuasiveness (sp?) of the P.M.

Lets hope he can use some of this skill to influence the gathering in Gleneagles to do the right thing. Idealistic I know - be but one can only hope...
