The year is correct. The Mercedes 300 SL (forth car in the row, no. 7) was driven by Paul Metternich and Wittigo (funny name) von Einsiedel. They retired in lap 58 due to ignition problems. It was yet another depressing year because Louis Henry (Panhard no. 51) was killed in an accident.
There is something else remarkably about the 1956 race. What is it ?

Is his name not Ron Flockhart, not Roger? Drove with Sanderson, Ninian.

A Mercedes in 1956  ??? it's impossible, just because the 1955 edition...

Remarkable points about 1956 edition:

The winning car wasn't a factory car but the personal car of RON Flockhart and Ninian Sanderson.

70% of the cars didn't finish the race, only 14 over 50 finished.

Jean-Marie Lelievre became the new president of the ACO

A lot of changes has been made along the track: the track is 2 metres downer to the grandstands, they built the stairs, also called uncovered grandstands, they built 60 new stands with the apparition of an upper level for sponsor receptions, a large hill which is 1.2 m high is erected all along the track, the tunnel from the general entrance to the shampoo bar is inaugurated and each stand has his own gas pump with a counter and a filtering system,...

... anything else in 1956 ??

A tiny DB with a Panhard 750cc engine (I've got nearly the same in my car) win the indice of performance before the 1500cc Porsche.

... anything else??

The first year hgb attented to the race ??

No, no, that was long before I saw the light of the day. Wasn't the race held in July instead of June ?
