Title: Sebring 2012
Post by: Bob U on August 12, 2011, 01:33:41 pm
Not too early to be thinking about this. So who's going?

Just checked Virgin and BA prices, both the same at £602 Rtn. That has got to come down surely?

I'm going. Planning a 3 week holiday with the race in the middle.

The flights will come down, I never can tell if the more you look for set dates/times, the system thinks it looks popular, so holds the prices a bit longer.

Why do you think the prices will come down?  Usually they start off lower and rise, as the demand increases, porbably best to buy now!

Both BA and Virgin usually have a sale around November time. Last year it only cost £510 Rtn when booked in the sale.

That does sound a bit heavy.  I'm hoping to go but at that price I'm not sure.

What other costs are involved?  To be honest I'd rather not hire my own car but would prefer to share with someone.

I guess I'll be traveling light (i.e. No Lawn Mower :-) so what is the deal?

I've got permisson to go, and will most probably book a flight in November, possibly through Gatwick. Flightplan is saturday before race to Orlando, and back sunday after the race. Anyone who is planning the same, I'll gladly share a rental with.

I'm arriving on the Monday, but coming from Minneapolis and returning on the Sunday.

I've seen the package on the RLM site-car is included (around £600 p/p), but no flights. would prefer to share with folk etc.

I intened to fly out from LGW on Thursday Morning and fly home Sunday evening. This should means I get to Turn 10 around 8pmish and in time for The WFO party and night practise. I will hire a car at MCO to get down to Sebring. No idea of sleeping arangements yet. The last couple of years we have hired an RV, but that does mean someone has to be in line with it on Tuesday night to drive it into Green Park early Wednesday Morning. Early days yet but I'm sure it will all come together nicely.

Around £380 the two years prior, in the sale.

Not sure I will make it next year, got my daughters wedding to pay for and at £90 a head for the reception it will not be cheap.

One of the positives of living on an island. :(

Planning to go, have to skip Atlanta this year, hope I won't have to miss Sebring.

Anyone have a good sleeping option near the track ? Not too fond of camping.
Will be flying out from Brussels, not a clue yet about when to leave & when to get back.

Plan to be there, no firm plans yet though but happy to share car rental if it fits in with others plans wise. Gatwick and Manchester flights are usually within 45 mins of each other arriving at Orlando so that isn't an issue.

I really ought to go, but I need to retire to find the time, and it looks like my pension has gone down the toilet again, so hay ho, hay ho, its off to work....  It would have to be a bit of a road trip

By the time I get there it will be ruined

Hi Dottore,
There are so few motels in town of Sebring you will most likely end up in Lake Placid to the south or up Hwy 27 towards Lake Wales where there are some new motels. Sharing an RV might be an option. Even arriving on Thursday morning would get a spot  though not at the fence.
Hope to see you there.

Rough distances :-

NZ-Orlando 8000 miles
UK-Orlando 4,500 miles.

Neither of us are close but guess the double price is almost justified.

Doris, come over for Xmas and stay, Use the return flight via the US!

Dottore, as Phil said, not many hotels in Sebring, and those that are there are probably booked solid.  Its over a two hour drive to either Orlando or Tampa, the closest large cities.  Sebring as you've probably guessed by now is right smack in the middle of nowhere.  Renting a RV is probably your best option.  I'm not much of a camper either, but at Sebring its definitely the way to go.  There's so much stuff going on all the time, just better to stay in residence.  Bring earplugs if you want to sleep though, this year the Dodge City-Stumble Inn guys had an insomniac rooster, who was obviously confused by the giant full moon. ;D

Let me think about that Rick. I missed last summer because I was in the UK.  It's currently winter here and I'm freezing my kahoonas off, and you're suggesting I miss another summer for the northern winter all over again.  Tempting, but... No thanks.   :)

If I don't raise the funds in time then I will plan to run another SAS (Sebring Appreciation Society) Party on race night. Last years (2011) was a success thanks to live streaming and Radio Le Mans and the copious amounts of beer that was consumed!

Venue will most likely be at mine however suggestions of alternative locations will be considered. Broadband speed for streaming being the optimum requirement. I get 24meg during the day but only 4meg when the schools finish!

Still there may be time for me to win the lottery! Better buy tickets I guess.

I don't know if Sebring is that much more civilized than Le Mans, but from my experience of the two Sebring is certainly more fan friendly.
No thieving pikeys, no ten foot high cement walls topped with razor wire, no having to wade ankle deep through trash because the ACO haven't figured out what a garbage can is.

Spot on there Dave, that is one of the nice aspects of the circuit layout at Sebring, you can walk large distances of the circuit without actually having to travel very far...If that makes any sense.  Agreed LT, if nothing else, I would never describe Sebring as being "family" entertainment.  The sheer number of campsite's displaying inflatable sex dolls would quickly make parents realize would a horrible idea it was to take the kiddies there. ;D

[Edit]  Sorry - didn't realize attachments weren't auto-downsized.

Quote
As Sebring’s legendary 12-hour classic nears its 60th Anniversary celebration, a special commemorative poster has been produced showing all 59 winning cars from six decades of racing on the famous central Florida circuit.

“The 60 Years of Sebring” poster commemorates the 60th Annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh from Florida, America’s greatest sports car race. Sebring opens the 2012 FIA World Endurance Championship and the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patron on Saturday, March 17th.

Painted by artist Roger Warrick, the poster also shows the evolution of the famous Sebring pit structure from the first race in 1952. The circuit originated from a World War II USAAF training base known as Hendricks Field. Several B-17s are shown in the artwork, along with several other historical details.

This limited edition commemorative poster will go on sale in January. The official event poster will be released in February. Watch for details at sebringraceway.com.

Fax,

Could I tempt you further by stating that I'm seriously considering a trip over this year?  Imagine, warm evenings drinking beer and eating american food, whilst engaging in heated discussion of Senna and Mansell Vs. The current crop, and perhaps the opportunity to realise that I'm not the jumped up a***hole I appear to be when discussing such matters......  Although maybe there are a few people who may disagree with that to be honest :)

In all seriousness - I need someone to help me work out what I would need to do/buy/order in order to set Sebring in motion.  it's a pipe dream at the moment, but with the baby on the way, I would like to have some kind of final blast before it's born, and Sebring seems to be the perfect way to do it!

Hi Brad,
I would not recommend it as Motorcycles are not allowed in to Sebring. A special unsecured parking area is available but i would not leave a Rented Harley there. Before or after zooming around Florida is fun,if you like straight flat roads  :) More info available if required.

My suspicion is that I've made my last ever trip beyond Europe due to the insurance implications of the combination of disability and cancer :(.  Do any of you lot still go stateside with the spectre of uninsurable medical problems hanging over you and if so how do you do it?  I'd hate to think I'll never see Sebring again or, worse still ever do Petite or Laguna Seca.

Termie,

Rex is coming this year apparently - I'm fairly sure he's an uninsurable condition.

I can't help really - other than to make the general comment, that life is short - too short really.  Live for today, worry about the risk of what might and might not happen, when it's a problem - and as if it was ever in doubt, you'll certainly not be short of friends in Sebring, Laguna Seca, or any other track in the Europe or the US - ask anyone who has ever had a problem at Le-Mans, Sebring, or any other of the big races in the last few years, those friends can often pull amazing things out of the hat to see people right.

Happy Xmas everyone....

I'm still looking in to flights, and those sound good to me. I'll have to wait till next week before I can book flights moneywise, if the ratesa are still as good as they are now, it could mean I'll pop over to the UK on sunday, to have the same flights as Brad. Let's see if we van empty that bar together. ;)

I fly out on sunday 11th, and returnflight is on monday 19th. This was the best possible combination for the money. Flying home on sunday was either way to early in the morning, or for a ridiculous rate. Booked right on time I guess, return flight is a 160 euro's more now.....

Article From the official site for Sebring.

I have many memories of Sebring, good and bad, but that is only in terms of the racing. That usually tends to go by race results. From my point of view Sebring 2009 is probably one of my best races in my career, it was fighting all the way to the end against Peugeot. The last two hours I had to pull everything out of the bag to make sure that the Audi R15 TDI won its first ever race. I could also look back to 2006 and the pole position with the first diesel, the R10 TDI, and to give the car its first victory, with Tom, Dindo and I, it was really incredible.

But the biggest impression Sebring has made on me is the crowd, the 180,000 or so fans that turn up. The way they create such a carnival, they make this an annual event. The way they get into the spirit of this unique race is just……fantastic. there is no other way to put it.

I do love that at the autograph session you see the weird and the wonderful; someone dressed as The Stig’s very fat brother, then there are the lawyers dressed up as cows, everyone coming along with their families and friends, all being part of this great event.

As a single story, probably the biggest thing that has brought me into this scene was going to Turn Ten, for a photo shoot with John Brooks, one year (2004). To see that there is a club at Turn Ten, where they have made their own grandstands, they have made their own bar, their own restaurant, in effect they have cornered a section of the track as their own territory. They return there every year, like a pilgrimage. They have their own entrance ticket effectively, which is a key ring and I am pleased to say I have been able to build up a collection of Turn Ten key rings over the years. To see the commitment that these guys have put into enjoying the 12 Hours of Sebring certainly matches the commitment that Audi Sport and every other team makes to win the race, that makes Sebring special.

I haven't been on here in a long time, but as it's fast approaching March - and I've received a few messages on faceache regarding hotels, car rental, RV rentals, airport runs etc etc., I thought it might be helpful in some small way to offer some local assistance with bookings and logistics. March 12 seems to be the early arrivals (I have some family coming in from UK on that day too, so a few welcome to FL beers at FoF sounds to be appropriate.
Anyone who needs help, just holler and I'll do what I can. I have a houseful of family over for the race, so I'm afraid I can't offer accommodation, but I'll endeavour to help with any reasonable logistical requests.
As always, those bearing PG Tips, Sure roll-on and Resolve Extra get preferrential treatment.
Not long now....

That's really kind Matt, I'm sure we all really appreciated it.

Woolly, Liz Baker and I will be staying at La Quinta on the evening of Monday 12th, and will be at the Fish on Fire that evening to ease ourselves in gently (did you hear that Mr Harper? GENTLY!) before collecting our accomodation for the week on Tuesday mid morning (or when the hotel chucks us out!).

From there, I'm told it's no sleep till we get on the return flight.

Brad Z

P.S.  Matt, I've got you a couple of the biggest boxes of PG tips which I could find - might have to find a contraband mule for the rest, apparently I have to bring clothes and stuff.... :)

Is this the same Brad as the one over on sebringfans.com who's telling all us lightweights that we need to prepare for the "English Invasion"?
Wheels-down FoF session is pretty laid back - the trick is not to go mental on the flight, then stay up late as you can and suffer a few libations and some nice Flawda vittles to battle the jet-lag. Historically, those who have left the Fish on Fire vertical (and there have been many who didn't) tend to be much better aclimated as a result.
How are you getting to Kissimmee to pick up your RV? Just shout-up if you need a ride (gotta earn those teabags somehow, other than my charming personality).

Although I don't really need an excuse to amble down to the FoF to get hammered, if anyone else is arriving through MCO and would care for Beer on Fire and the best Blackened Grouper Sandwich in the state, before heading out to the track, please let me know.

Just spotted this. Marius - you've always been friendly to me - and in 2008 you handed me a large case of un-drunk Guinness before departing back to the Netherlands - and I don't forget people who've got my back.
If you need a ride back to Orlando on Sunday, we have a place for you - and you are most welcome to sleep in our bad-ass RV overnight Sunday, outside of my house (I wish I could provide a bed indoors, but have a houseful of UK-based family, post-race). We will be having a bit of an after-party that you're welcome to  join, if you're not too wrecked.
We can also deliver you to the airport on Monday, if you need the ride. You been good to us - we be good to you. Deal?

To all who may be concerned.......
Matt......is quite right with his advice.....Neil and I were picked up by Matt from the airport and deposited for a change of attire at the Ramada just down the road from the FoF and then entertained by Matt at his Local for the evening.......We got to be compeletely wrecked after a 6 hour session at the Fish on Fire and then had to navigate our way to Sebring the following morning.... which I must add was not easy with Jet lag and hangovers the size of Mount Everest....So a word or warning Brad .....is don't unestimate the might of the American way of drinking....If you include Matt as an American......then you might just regret you comments!!!!

I'm sure you will have a great time and fit in well with the American crowd - just don't lose sight of the fact that some of these guys have been partying hard at Sebring since before a good number of us were born (not me sadly) and have seen many a party-animal blowhard lying in a puddle of his own piss by race day morning.

Likewise SR, there are several Sebring newbies I would love to be able to finally share a beer with in person, and a few old friends from LM trips past that would be huge fun to reunite with.
Keeping fingers crossed,

That does sound a bit heavy.  I'm hoping to go but at that price I'm not sure.

What other costs are involved?  To be honest I'd rather not hire my own car but would prefer to share with someone.

I guess I'll be traveling light (i.e. No Lawn Mower :-) so what is the deal?

Hi Tom,
You can come with Bob & I from Toronto ;D
We can borrow a Lawn Mower for you Florida
You can come in what you stand up in ... we can look after you.

That'll be a 4 day Superticket, Tom. Price is $90 (inc. tax) before Jan 31, after that it's $120.
You'll also need $40 for a car (in Green Park) and $85 for an RV.
Ticket info is at www.sebringraceway.com
You can call +1 863 655 1442 and buy with a credit card and collect your tix at will-call (at the main gate).

Thank for that Matt,  BobU already phoned with the ticket details so I now have the 4 day Superticket waiting at the gate.  :-)
Bob also offered me a lift on the Wednesday but of course if anyone else is around on Tuesday and has a spare seat that may be better for me.  Otherwise I'll just rent a car for the day and do some sight seeing before Bob, Ian and the rest turn up on Wednesday.

I don't really want to rent a car for four days and then keep it in a car park.  :-)   So I'm hoping I can scourge a place in an RV and share the cost or I can take a tent and pitch up next to Canada Phil.  (I'm used to his snoring now.  :-)

And I'm biting myself in the ass by flying to Miami.  ::)

If I get myself to Orlando during the monday, any chance I can hitch a ride with anyone to the track? Otherwise I'll have to spend lots of money on a rental that will sit around most of the time, money I'd rather spend on alcohol to share. ;)

If anyone needs a sleepingspace at the track, I've got a tent with three compartiments, which I'll be using all by myself sofar.....

Well what can I say CA has come though big time.
So many offer of help etc.

So my plan is this.

Arrive Tues Evening meet up with Wishy.
Travel to the Circuit with Wishy Wednesday met up with Phil to claim a tent etc.
Thus, Fri,  Sat  drink beer and watch fast cars.  May even eat something.
Sunday travel back to Orlando not sure who with though.

I'll have no problem to pinch in on the upgrade, so I think my plan is coming together. I'll book a hotel in Miami for sundaynight, get me a car to drive to Orlando the next day (and do some shopping on the way). Arrange the car so that I can drop it of in Orlando, book a room in La Quinta, and be on my merry way on Tuesday with you guys. For the way back, I'll take up Mr Harpers offer, and get me a car to drive back on monday to Miami, as my flight isn't due till 21.45 that evening.

Gently?

Sorry Matt, I've only just seen this - I think we're alright for lifts to and from Kissimmie - Liz will have her car with her, so she'll drive us to Kissimmie, and then it'll either be Woolly or I at the wheel of the RV (or both of us dependant on how jetlagged/hungover we are).  Thanks for the offer though - it's appreciated.

Hi SR, likewise looking forward to meeting you too.  I'm not entirely warm & fuzzy about how this has worked out however. I've got big problems with Sebring Raceway and their post-advance ticket prices.  Those thieving bastards are charging a additional THIRTY fricking dollars per ticket for any purchased after Jan 31st.  That is absolute highway robbery! No other way to describe it.  I'm looking at an additional sixty dollars for tickets, simply because I couldn't secure the vacation time until now.
The orginal ALMS slogan used to be "For the Fans".  Seems like its evolved into "Lets see how much we can screw the Fans".  I still haven't pulled the trigger on the tickets yet, and I'm having a hard time swallowing getting ripped-off like this.

A bit of a storm in a teacup - everyone keep hold of your wigs and keys, the panic is over.
We decided to able down to the FoF for a late beer last night - and as we rounded the lonesome corner of Detweiler and McCoy we noted that 4 pumps from Orlando FD were storming into the parking lot, like a scene from The Towering Inferno.
Naturally, we all had a "Phoenix Nights moment", assuming that the FoF was, once again, about to become fully engulfed.
Turns out they were turned-out for the hotel next door - but that too, was remarkably uncharred.
They had a bit of a poke around, muttered something about a dodgy smoke detector and shipped out, so rest easy - the La Quinta flea pit is still standing proud and unsinged, adjacent to the Smokehouse and Grill. See you in there for a pint, in the not too distant...

There has been a tradition for more than a decade in the CA editorial team (Jock, GF, DJet, Tony L and others ) of consuming substantial and mind-altering quantities of pastis, particularly late night after night practice on Wednesday. Despite the fact that I know this does very bad things to my head on Thursday, I still participate. When will I ever learn?

Oh Boy!  Ricard left me in a dreadful, if probably emusing to our colleagues, state on Friday night.  It kinda crept up on me, one minute perfectly coherent, the next I'm almost knocking over the Harper-Maison Blanche bar with my head.  Funny thing is I didn't feel that horrible the next morning, probably because I started drinking Warsteiner for breakfast before the hangover had time to set in ;)
I'll have to swing by the local liquor store and pick up a bottle for the weekend, just for shits & giggles.  If I can get some others to help me drink it, being silly loves company...

Chris,

I is a better version of Pernod and is one of my favourite tipples, but it does have a reputation for biting back the next day if you have consumed a tad too much the night before ;D

Title: Re: Sebring 2012

Pernod Ricard is a French company that produces distilled beverages. The company's eponymous products, Pernod Anise and Ricard Pastis, are both anise-flavoured liqueurs and are often referred to simply as Pernod or Ricard. The company also produces several other types of pastis. 1975 – Old rivals Pernod and Ricard merged.

After the banning of absinthe, Pernod Ricard was created from the Pernod Fils company.

Pastis is king, though they are both good. Strange thing is, for the uninitiated, is the fact that it changes colour when water is added and both have a different colour with Ricard Pastis looking a little browner. You do not drink this straight, add water if you want a little softer taste replace the water with lemonade, I drink both depending on the mood. For a refreshing drink use a fair bit of lemonade and a lot of ice in a tall glass or as below mix with a syrup which is very popular in France.

Some well known cocktails use pastis and syrups, including the following:

    * Mauresque (French for "moorish"): pastis with orgeat syrup
    * Perroquet (French for "parrot"): pastis with green mint syrup
    * Tomate (French for "tomato"): pastis with grenadine syrup
    * Rourou (from "Rousseau-Wiart"): pastis with strawberry syrup
    * Cornichon (French for "pickle"): pastis with banana syrup
    * Mazout (French for "Mazut"): pastis with cola

The Sebring 2012 seems to have turned into the 'Pastis thread'.

If you get tired of Pernod/Ricard/Pastis 51... you could try another Pernod product, 'Suze'. It was Picasso's tipple but it is a bit 'Marmite' in the love or hate stakes.

Ha, unfortunately Phil, she has pointed out that I tend to head out to Le-Mans on Wednesday....

I tried "Jet lag" as an excuse, but that only really kicks in when you come home (well for me anyway).....

I haven't heard the likes of Aquavit or meths mentioned in the panoply of the beverage menu yet, but do remember that these are but one short step down the road to ruin from pastis.  Take care out there...

And to you lucky, lucky people who will be there.....yes, I am envious, but may all power be given to your elbows and may you be granted the stamina for the full enjoyment of fine motorsport, good company along with bucketloads of completely inappropriate alcoholic beverages, and a safe trip there and back.... :)

I out it on the telly to show the missus some highlights from it but she watched and enjoyed the whole lot. Got me a bit worried that she might want to come with me!!

The jury is still out on this year, it'd be a shame to miss it (it'd be my 10th in a row - well, 10 years in Florida in March, think I may have missed out on being at the track one year!!)) but I'm not working and waiting to hear about a second interview for a job. If that happens this week then I'm expecting to be making a late booking, probably to travel out on Tues 13th, with date of return depending on whether I have a job to rush back for... :-)

Job hunting unsuccessful so far, the one prospect I had vanished on Friday afternoon, so made a last minute booking last night, travelling out Tuesday on VS027 (same as Tom I believe) - arrive at the track (most likely in the Pidge camp) on Wednesday or Thursday. Flight a smidge under £400 which was better than I was looking at earlier this year.

Can you spare a few hours on Thursday/Friday/Saturday, can write in reasonable English? Would you'd like to earn a few euros working with the Sebring 12h ACO/FIA editorial team (working at home over the internet)?

John:

I'm at 33K ft somewhere over PA heading to NYC and then onto Houston before the final leg to MCO on Thursday afternoon.
Tonya will be flying in from Indy so I'll meet her there and we'll drive over to the track.  My flight arrives about 7:15 pm so after scoring the renter (the cheapest rental car I've ever had so it may be like Joe and Tiny from Happs driving in Ireland), I'm guessing we won't be at the track before 10 pm.  The crew should be at a relatively predictable state of reality by that point, so it should be a fun roll-in.  What time do you think you'll pull-in on Friday?  Can't wait to see you brother.  When was the last time you saw Tonya????

Hi Dave,
It'll be late Thursday night or early Friday morning when we get there. We're driving straight to the circuit from Cincy.  Good lord its been ages since I've seen Tonya, probably a GP at Indy (04-05), I've missed her probably alot more than she misses my miscreant ass.
We may be arriving with heavy hearts though, Mooch has gone into full renal failure.  The vet has him this weekend pumping him with IV fluids to get him re-hydrated, but you know how the score usually ends on this sort of situation.  The tuxie's been a good tomcat...

Great pics Kristof,
Hope your enjoying your first Sebring trip, and your stay over here.  Wish I was there.  Have cold beer for me.

Thanks Fax !  Not the first time I'm at Sebring though, was here in 2008 for the race and a few times at the testdays in February.  Still good to come back here !

As enough people asked I am lead to believe some of you give a sh*t  :)
After a final round of good byes I left the track at 12 noon on Sunday It was 28 C and sunny.
Hwy 27 North was steady all the way to I 4. The drive through Orlando was better than usual and a detour into Daytona was probably not smart but it was nice to see the remains of Bike Week and a few bikinis to make the traffic jam worth suffering. The coast road up to St Augustine is a favourite of mine but was also slow with a few bikinis  ;D or was that bikes? and lovely seascapes even if I could not stop.
Once back on I 95 it was hammer down and get on with the drive home. Once into Georgia it was dark and time for dinner before it became too late on a Sunday. Fuel stops have become a bit of a challenge as many pumps now require a Zip code matched to the card before they will work. Canada has postal codes using letters so not recognized by the machine. I always push to get past Charlotte NC in both directions as it is a major traffic snarl up for hours either side. I pressed on into the night eventually stopping at 3:30am in Summersville WV as a thunderstorm was just getting started. Managed 4 hours of sleep interupted by a downpour that made me feel i was in a drum under Niagara Falls. as i was warm and dry i went back to sleep. ::) Off  before 8am with a full tank of gas and a coffee. breakfast in Morgantown  with another tank of gas. traffic was pretty light though quite a lot of construction in PA.. Big crash on the highway near my house so had to make a detour which confused the GPS lady until I turned her off  ;D Home at 5:00pm
That is 2320KM in less than 24 driving hours.
Endurance Drinking followed by Endurance Spectating with Endurance driving too. Those racrers don't know how lucky they are :D ;D ;D
Temp ar home under sunny blue skies......26 C. The Polar Bears are doomed  :(
Sleepy Phil
PS good to meet so many CA visitors . Great pictures as always Dottore.

Hi Xander,
Nice pictures and write up of the race. I am not sure about those 3D though. Sorry I did not stop to chat longer. If I had realised that was our only meeting I would have found a Guinness for you. Mine were back at camp cooling off ;D
One must enjoy driving to make such long journeys enjoyable.

Just at Orlando waiting for my flight home, delayed by a couple of hours. I arrived at the track on the Wednesday and managed to see some racing on the Saturday (only about an hour) before having to take my leave. Since then, have stayed in Fort Lauderdale and Key West. While Sebring seems a long time ago already, it was great to meet up with everyone again, and thanks for those who offered me help and assistance one way or another, especially given the lateness of my decision to attend.
