Title: HD Video Editing
Post by: Robspot on October 26, 2009, 03:38:44 pm
Does anyone do HD video editing and if so can you answer the following:

What spec of PC do you have?
Do you have a dedicated video capture board?
What software do you use?

I have a Sony HD camcorder and want to actually do something with the video I have taken.

What's happened to Peter's reply?

Anyway, thanks for that Peter. I am replacing my pc through work and we use Dell who unfortunately don't do SSD drives yet. The spec I am looking at so far is

2.4 GHz Quad Core Xeon processor
12 GB 1066 MHz RAM
2 x 300 GB SAS Drives
Windows 7 Ultimate
1GB ATi FireGL Graphics Card

Should be man enough.

Do you have any software experience or recommendations?

Cheers Peter.

The 2 300 gig drives will be mirrored with the onboard raid controller and I already have a home media server which has plenty of striped storage. I'm also going for the blue ray writer.

I will check out Adobe, I've seen it recommended elsewhere.

One more thing, how do you get the video off the camera? Is firewire the best way or a dedicated hdmi or dv capture board?

Most DV-camara's have build-in harddisks/memory, so Firewire should be the way to go to take the raw material from the camerea. Will also be faster then a cardreader, although internal they do usually use a USB 2.0 connection, which is way slower then Firewire.

There are a few Sony's which can save to memorysticks though, I do not know what type Rob has.

PC is ordered and awaiting delivery.

Should have pointed out that my camcorder is a hard disk version Sony and records in AVCHD which means transfer will probably have to be HDMI or USB (might have a look in the manual!)

Will download some trial software but Pinnacle and Sony Vegas Platinum both handle that format and sell for under £100.

Will let you know more once the pc arrives. Thanks for your help.
