Title: Post Office Travel money card
Post by: garyfrogeye on June 13, 2012, 06:18:23 pm
I've got hold of one of these today so that I can use the card in the automatic petrol pumps however reading the small print it says that the cards can't be used in automated petrol stations. This sort of defeats the point of getting it. Does any one know if this is definitely the case or can they be used?

Bugger! I guess mine won't work either...

You can always draw cash on it and pay that way I guess, but you're right, it does kind of defeat the object.

Are they backed by Visa or Mastercard?  If not then I'd guess they're u/s I'm afraid.  Paying cash isn't much good when they're closed though is it?  A bit daft by the sound of it.

Visa debit cards still won't work in those automated thingys - tried again this year. (But always go armed with 5 or 6 clean credit cards.......just in case) - my visa debit would not work in the mobile PDQ machines in the stalls behind the grandstands - had to invest 30euros in a fleece on Wednesday when I left mine in the car.

This one is HSBC

Unless I just got unlucky, or perhaps whether they work is selective according to the bank or vendor??

Travelex do a pre-paid Mastercard at better rates than the Post Office (still not sure if it works in the petrol stations). But you can book online at best rates  and pick up at most ports and airports when you travel. I also understand that you can top up by phone if you get low

Worth investigating !?!

My (natwest) Visa Debit card worked fine for petrol and the pèage, but I do recall Gary having some issues with that Post Office card

Mind you, I'm glad I got home before the RBS pooter blew its stack

Unless I just got unlucky,
I think that's the most likely explanation.  In fact, the LM weekend is by far the worst here for rejected Brit cards of all sorts.  I think the coms links just get fried!  Sometimes just 5 minutes later the same card will work fine.  Not much help when you're out of fuel though!
