Just have to love the French 8)

It was only because there were two, that I noticed. At least they got one right - just not sure which one.
I do wonder how many times the Union Flag has been upside down

It was upside down when Strakka went up!

Well they regularly fly the Union Flag upside down on top of the Pits Grandstand.

very funny.

Given that a flag flown upside down, is essentially a distress signal, I presumed it was done on purpose to mark the passing of a fellow racer? I thought all of the winning flags had been flown that way....or is that too organised for the French to have managed?

The 1940 invasion of France was not that long ago.
Some people never forget!

I recall a panic pre-podium moment for the organizers of a GT race at Silverstone when a driver won whose nationality was listed as 'Mongolian'. Several tense minutes ensued with a fruitless search for the national flag of Mongolia. Sanity returned however when it was pointed out that the 'Mo' on the entry list was not Mongolia but Monaco... duh!
