Title: Calling all Internet Experts, How does this work

I think this is scary.

My mate sent me a link for one of those sites with loads of Adult type things a bit like rotten.com. Its at

www.wtfpeople.com (http://www.wtfpeople.com)

On the homepage down the right hand side, it has an ad to meet 'sexy girls' with a picture of a nice looking blonde and under that it says 'In Whitley Bay' (which is where I live). I got my mate to try it and an area near his place comes up.
How do they know where your PC is.

PS Vacumn Packing girls is a bit strange. Over to you H.

PPS Clicking on the 'Street Biker Wipes Out' brings up photos of girls near me, not that I recognise any of them.

I don't think it is quite that scary.... Unless I moved to East Anglia to live near the Cobra Boys so they can wake me up on the morning of the 15th June.

The Blonde Bird is in Ipswich for me, I only ever went there once years ago.

It's all to do with the geographic information that has got logged with your IP address, or block of IP addresses.

I get listed as being in Stafford, which I'm not. http://www.showmyip.com/gb/  (http://www.showmyip.com/gb/) lists my ISP as being in Telford, which I guess is close enough to Stafford.

Well, for me it says 'Felixstowe' which is a very sad and lonely place, mostly full of container ships nowadays (and about 20 miles from me).

you can get some software that changes your ip address frequently.  It slows down your computer when viewing sites so gets frustrating as sites can take ages to down load.

if you aint do in a michael jackson why worry
