We've decided that we need 3 of these devices so that we can chat on the way down etc etc.
Can anybody point us in the right direction of what we should be looking for please, pref ones that can work for a few miles apart.

I have a pair of Motorola Talkabouts, which say they will work for up to two miles, but I have found they will only work for about 1 1/4 miles provided theres a clear signal between the two sets.
Still, they are pretty good for car to car in convoy and much easier than fitting the CB's like we used to do when watching rallies. Makes the journey much more fun !

Most of the PMR's are compatible with each other - on the journey last year we were chatting to the SPS all the way down through a completely different radio to the ones they were using. This year we have the same ones, but that is cos my pit to kart radio project fell on its arse :D ::)

The sps crew will be on channel 7.0 ;D

Not much use to you but I got them at Wal Mart in the US as they are dirt cheap over there ! Isn't everything ?
You can pick up the same basic thing over here pretty cheap now if you shop around a bit.

saw some 5 mile range ones for sale in the RS (electronic bits company) for just £25!!
I brought some back from SEBRING!!
6 mile range all the handsfree stuff $40! They even did 8 mile range ones.
It seems as though there is a limit of 5 mile range in the UK?

I borrowed some Motorola talkabout TS 600's last year ( a workmate brought them back from the states) and I thought they were class. Like mentions as long as you have a clear view they will work. If I could see my mates car they were fine. I borrowed maine (and still have them) of a mate at work who brought them back from the states and he said he paid about £35 for the pair. I'll think I'll take them this year.

I hate to promote this site but ebay does have a selection of 6mile ones for around £25.

i think the ones available in the US & Uk differ between available frequencies..

8) shall we use channel 7 to warn of speed traps? although the BMW powered Bedford is usually under the limit owing to its all up weight of about 4 1/2 tons when loaded with 5 people, 5 bikes, three fridges etc etc

I got some binatone ones from maplins last year, smart looking rechargeble batteries etc but the range was nothing like a mile maybe about 600 yrds maximum, so very poor.
So best get some that have been recomended!

I'd go along with Redstu - my old NTL ones don't have good range either. Use recommended ones only!!

thanks 2 this thread i went a lookin on ebay and with confermation from dad, bought a set of two walkie talkies, 8 mile range!!! 22 channels ect... dad, good idea about traffic warnings, lets screw with the speed traps.

I got some BT Freeways off "that site" last year after going skiing with some mates who had them, they're a bit cheaper this year.
Range is pretty good but the supplied battery packs were rubbish, a pack of AA's soon sorted that out. If only I'd got the ones with FM radios as well for Radio LM :'(
