Just spent the last 2 hours squeegying the garage out after the worst rain I have ever seen this side of the tropics. Opened a bottle of wine and logged on to see what you night shift CAers are up to. usual late night suspects I presume
-
No hail Bob? Size of small golf balls here... well, marbles anyway...
-
Agree the forked lighting only a few miles away was impressive.
Got soaked riding my bike home from the station though.
-
Just the standard issue Manchester drizzle up hereat the moment, which way is it moving?... :-\
-
should move North. better walk my dog NOW by the looks of the forcast :(
-
Well I doubt it'll reach Manchester from Wokingham...not till you're all tucked up anyway :P
-
Two inches of water in the garage and all the camping stuff still on the floor. usual comment from the dragon "Thats right you rescue the Le Mans stuff first"
They just don't understand do they
-
LOL Bob, you have got 50 weeks for it to dry out you know!
-
We've just had some impresive lightning and a bit of rain here.

Need some of it for Silverstone, priority tomorrow DRY TENT the cars are calling
-
Don't speak too soon Steve. If what I read today and the forcasted map of GB after the polar ice caps have melted I saw, then the East Anglian Cobras won't have far to travel to the ferry in a few years time
-
Thanks Bob, maybe I'll have to do an amphibious conversion !

I don't believe you Steve, any sinario and any situation and you have a bloody picture ready to be posted. :o
-
its quite incredible isnt it Bob, how can we catch him out?
Perhaps we should start a thread on "obscure topics Steve Brown cant find a picture for"!!!
???
-
I made it walkie doggie all dry :D Did see some flashes in the distance though :)

I know what my money will be on.

I'd forgotten all about that one, must have been about the same time as the Man at C&A "Got a lot of clothes" advert. They don't make them like that any more, classics. ;D ;D
-
We had some pretty nasty weather here last night. But in time honoured tradition JPC, Deliah, Avril and I just found a watering hole and plugged ourselves into the bar! Lovely way to watch the light show :D
-
I was in a pub when the storm hit. Decided it was best to stay there until the rain passed. Got home at 3.30 this morning. ;D
-
Kinnell that really was some storm!
Sat here at the compooter, plugged in and worrying about whether I would get fried or just the machine if it hit. Was on the broadband too!
Some of the lightning strikes were very close too, saw them and heard them in the same "breath" so to speak.
As a Plane was flying in towards BHX a huge bolt flashed sideways across in front of it and another seemed to dive to earth right from in front of it, scary!
Now serious question. Should I have gone downstairs to watch telly instead or was I just as safe doing the 'net?
All answers will be considered, unless there has been realistic scientific testing...

Serious Answer.
It depends.
If you have an outside TV aerial then the safest thing to do is unplug all of the the TV Sets, Freeview boxes and so on from the aerial.
If your mains is supplied via overhead cables you shoul unplug any electrical appliance you care about.
Lightening is the static electricity in the cloud going to earth. It takes the easiest path. Since most things like trees, houses etc are better conductors than air it will strike them if it can. Since metal is a better conductor than brick or wood IF it can it will go for your aerial and BANG you get several thousand may be millions of volts though your TV or Radio. They are not designed to withstand those sorts of voltages and so the bits inside get burnt to a crisp.
The safest place to be in a thunderstorm is somewhere else well away and not in the path of any flash flood that may occur as a result of the storm.
If you are in the storm then a saloon car is probably the safest place to be as long as there is nothing around that may fall and crush the car if it's struck by the lightening.
Planes are relatively safe in Thunderstorms. However no pilot in his right mind flies through a thunder storm the vertical winds make it very bumpy and can stress the airframe. Light aircraft can have problems climbing faster than the down draft so get put on the ground when they don't want to be on the ground.

Serious response then..
I should have made SWMBO very angry by disconnecting the aerials from the set and turning it off, but I was fairly safe compootin and could also have watched TV on my pinnacle TV card, with only a short length of wire inside the house as an aerial.
I THINK I am glad I stayed with the status quo, running my usual non-interference policy...
Phew :(

:o
And that was with the lights OFF
;D
-
Oooo Pretty ;D :D
I have always loved storms, and can often be found driving round the countryside waiting for them if a really big one is expected.
If I lived in the USA, I would almost certainly be one of those "Storm Chasers".
-
Pondering to myself whether Mr Invis also has a penchant for Tempest Storm and waits for Steve Brown to produce a pic!! (an easier challenge than the Fandango pic no doubt)

Carlos Fandango I could not do, Storms and Tempests I can :D

No No No!
Tempest Storm was (is) a legendary burlesque performer / stripper and was photographed by, amongst others, Russ Meyer

fran, the more I know you, (non Biblically, folks) the more you amaze me...
eclectic or what????
:o

LOL Perdu, thanks (I think!).
I do have a broad interest in the Arts amongst other things and Ms Storm is an icon whose notoriety crosses the boundaries of gender and generation IMHO! (I rather suspect Steve Brown agrees....)
:)

I just noticed Bill, you're fast approaching Yabb God status.
You really should try and get it all to make sense from here on ;D

When did anything here have to make sense?
I mean who in their right minds or left come to that leaves a perfectly good home to spend a week in the squalid conditions found in Le Sathe in June?
So show me a sane person and I'll cure them.

Bob, I haven't asked for such adoration.
And making sense? I always make sense, to me...
(Make sense? A bloke that spends twenty zillion squids a year on fireworks, tells me to make sense? LOL)
;) ;) ;) ;)
Still you got some great bangs for your bucks Bob! :)
