This is the going rate for this lot. Mention a trailer or caravan and the figures get silly. Mention a motorhome and its a joke. Oh god we've got a motorhome and trailer
Dover Calais beckons
-
we are going out Wed, back Monday. no trailers, just 16 cars going for a gentle drive in france. ;)
-
CHeapest so far i can find is the chunnel.
-
Norfolkline - Dover to Dunkerque (it's only 10 minutes from Calais at racing speed), still show a price of £19 each way if booked during October for Tuesday til Monday.
BUT - you have to travel after 11pm :-[
-
Used Norfolkline last year for car + caravan. Food is good & cheap. Boats are good. Crossing is cheap & slow. Dunkirk was a nightmare on the return journey - no good signposts.
Overall, I' d use them again but not in a hurry.
-
I don't really understand what's going on with the prices from Channel Tunnel. Few week ago I did a weekend return by van for E42,-. Now I'm trying to book LMES Donnington, no cheaper than E 187,- ??? :(
-
Sorry to tell you Paddy, but thats the difference between booking mid-october and August bank holiday weekend in School holidays. :(
-
If your save Tesco Club Card points then use them to pay for you eurotunnel crossing. They are worth 4 x the face value, ie £10 of vouchers is worth £40 in crossing vouchers.
-
Paddy, now you know why we make all the fuss about the ferry (same with air fares to Sebring!). You can pay anywhere £30 and £600 for the same trip. Double that if you've got a caravan.
And you're lucky, because we know that they charge the continentials less.
-
Yeah, I understand now :)
-
Ita a game you have to play (to win). Sea France the other way is £60. The website won't book the other way, and eventually I broke into the French side, and they're not giving prices for August!
All part of the game. Good luck, and as they say in Latin - Nil illegitimi carborundum (don't let the bastards grind you down)
-
I've been extravagant, I've booked P&O @£155 for car and caravan (Seafrance was only £140 but the times weren't ideal for the F1). With cheap hotel on way down and extra petrol its about £300, compared to £450+ for a Portsmouth route. I can then link up with the Kent end of the team on the 5am Monday ferry.
I don't think I've paid that little for about 10 years
-
5am Monday ferry.
travelling on monday morning with a headache then?! :)
-
Not booked my ferry yet, wasn't sure which route to take, but just re-checked LD Lines and I got a price of £167 for a car + 2, going out on the 14th coming back on the 19th, no cabins left tho, but a lot less than Brittany.
I usually go Dover-Calais, but at 13mpg it looks like Portsmouth-Le Havre will work out cheaper with the shorter drive both sides of the channel!

I'm definitely looking at LD Lines next year. £180 compared to my Brittany Ferries booking of £280 for the same times.

That's out, not back, but the last time I went that way, some were in the Pub till 3. Well no point in going to bed.

wow.. price seems to flutuate quite a bit.... go for it whilst you got a good quote. those are the same crossing times we are all on :)

we booked end of last year and the price was even less - £130 i think..
-
Am I missing something here
I booked Speedferries £50 return ???
-
Maybe so Gary, but for those of us that prefer a long ferry crossing and a shorter drive LD Lines are proving to be a bit of a bargain! £200 for the minibus Sunday to Monday as opposed to £360 with Brittany to Caen!!
-
I've booked with LD, so we'll see some of you guys in Portsmouth.
The VomitComit might be cheaper, but with a longer drive for me either side, adding in the cost of fueling the Aston it doesn't always work out cheaper overall, plus we get a bit of kip on the way over and can be at LM before lunchtime. And I can do home to LM on under a tankfull (but then it is a 25 gallon tank), whereas from Calais I have to refuel on the way.
-
Don't fret Gary - there'll be plenty of friends on Speedferries.
We're on Thursday 0730 ish, back Monday 17.30 ish.

Cheap ferries... I wish!
Outbound: Rosslare to Roscoff
Inbound: Cherbourg to Rosslare
412 Euros!!! :o :o :o
At least I get a cabin each way as its a 18 hour crossing!
-
Per hour that is incredibly cheap. You'll pay close to that for a portsmouth ferry.
Us southerners tend to forget that some people have a long way to go, and NI to Rosslare must be a five hour drive to add on top, even in a 7.
Mind you, I've always been surprised at the lack of Irish involvement in what must be biggist pissup in the world. You'd expect them to be running the show, and there's not even an Irish Bar, and Paddy turns out to be Dutch
-
Gary I have saved LD lines in my bookmarks for next year. Last night they were threatening Pompey to France for £75 return.
I wish I wasn't travelling under the water in the tin worm, I always said they'd never get me down in one of those things... :(
Still, walking's getting better and better so I AM going to be there! :)

There is actually a very active sevens community over here and we've organised our own trackdays last year and this year. A few of them joined the cross-USA sevens tour last year, and this year a few are going to Cahmonix, with cars, for a weeks blatting about the alps. You're right though. To find a massive party without a huge Irish contingent is a bit strange. Maybe it's the lack of a guinness tent, or the fact that you have to get there in "one o dem big mettle fishies" that put's them off!
-
Spread the news, and do mention that tinned Guinness is available in Carrefour (and just about everywhere in the world for that matter)

There's a group of Irish guys that purely by chance we have somehow managed to meet up with every year for the last 5 years. Strangely it always seems to be in a bar somewhere!
I can't guarantee it, but I seem to recall them drinking either Guinness or Murphys on draft at the bar in the Auchan complex.
