Hi Lee
I don't believe I ever saw a Porsche race in Europe with that rear configuration. Or anything even approximately like that.
No doubt somebody will come along and prove me wrong.
-
I'm sure I saw one of these IMSA spec 962s race somewhere. It may have been on display though!. Le Mans always had an IMSA class - the 961s ran in it.
I think I'm becoming an old git - "they don't make them as good as that any more" - and I know I'm right
-
During the last few years of IMSA GTP the Porsche (Holbert, Rob Dyson, Joest, Momo-Moretti, Preston Henn, Bayside, etc.) teams came up with some pretty wild aero packages to try and stay competitive with the Nissan's, AAR Toyota's and Castrol Cats. That car was one of last incarnations of Holbert Racing's 962's, the team becoming increasingly occupied with the Porsche CART Indycar project.

I take that back, that was Busby Racing.

Correct, Jim Busby, not Holbert.

Same sort of slab-sided look as the Toyota Eagles but the front end is better looking. Look at the photos of the cockpit/tub construction. They weren't the most sophisticated of car were they?
-
Agreed Andy, when you pull the skin off them there's not much hi-tech going on there. The 962's really began to lose a lot of their original elegance when teams began tweaking the aerodynamics in search of more downforce to combat the threat of the Electromotive Nissan's and AAR Toyota Eagles (both of which were butt-ugly but ferociously quick). The Cats were always pretty though...
Grumpy

....and remember the #22 Goodwrench silver and black Corvette in 1987, it was a really pretty car but unreliable at the time. They learned a lot. They moved into GT1 and out of prototype, learned to beat the Vipers, and they have done well (despite the one green "guppie" win at Sebring last year).
-
You mean this one, the Corvette GTP run by Hendrick Motorsports. What a car !
-
That beast was fast as hell but rarely made it to the end of a race.
Usually driven by SVDM & Doc Bundy, they'd take off like scalded cat at the start but the car would usually break by mid-race. One problem was that they ran with a huge amount of turbo boost.

Oh yeah, fondly remember the Momo Porsche's. '92 was the last year they ran a 962. Next year they purchased a Nissan and in 1994, GTP sadly ended after a glorious reign.

This is the era of strange aero packages on 962s, after the factory choice of long and short tails.
See you all in 07. I'm going to go.
Oh sh*t, are the US wanting biometic passports from now on?. I'm just about to renew mine, and it seem the days of no visa are over, probably due to the shoebomber. But didn't he have a valid passport though? I'm terminally confused. I think we now have a voluntary ID card. So what. And the Brazilian was legal and still got shot.

Hi Nordic,
Yep the Group 44 Cats were lovely. I think one of the saddest sights I've ever seen at a IMSA weekend was back in '82 at Mid-Ohio when they returned a very bent Cat back to the paddock after being heavily shunted during Friday practice. Made you want to weep. Never thought they were well suited to Le Mans but much more at home on the tighter & bumpy North American circuts.

and a 956 from 83
http://rupert8766.fotopic.net/p6276262.html
But nothing from Preston at Le Mans
Good shots of the IMSA cars on your site, there sure did like to mess with the aero's back then!
Fax, your right about the Grp 44 cars, never suited the track in France. TWR tested one at Silverstone, and convinced Jag he could do a better job, I guess the rest is history, but the TWR cars never looked as good as the Grp 44 cars and I always felt sorry for the team they never got the deal.
-
Agreed Nordic, I think Bob Tullius was always more than a little bitter about Jaguar's decision to go with TWR. He had worked very hard to build the Group 44 effort into a crack outfit and return Jaguar to the Sarthe only to be abandoned in favor of Walkinshaw.
Fax
-
Gents, I disagree with respect. IMHO the Silk Cut Jags looked better every time over the Tuillius cars. Styling's a matter of personal preference of course, but there you are. From a technical point of view, I had a good look at a Tullius Cat at Sebring last year and it seemed fairly primative compared to the wonderful Tony Southgate designs.
As to why TWR got the deal, well, I had a mate who was an electronics manager at Jaguar and being obsessed with sportscars at the time, I badgered him to get every tidbit of gossip he could. He was the person who told me a Le Mans comeback for the works team was possibly on the cards and I remember being really quite exited. Anyway, Jag HQ probably picked TWR for no better reason than TWR had won them loads of races in the ETC with the XJS. Tom had a reasonable relationship with John Egan too and of course the team was located just down the road from Coventry.
I would add in defence of TWR that the team did win at Sarthe. Twice. No mean feat, though it could be argued that they should have won more than that. Tullius did not have a glittering record in European racing whereas Tom was alwways seen as a winner (F5000 debacle notwithstanding). And yes I do know about the massive US input that help secure the race in 1990. ;)
-
The TWR effort was great, no one can deny that. Following on from the XJS's it was logical to use a European team for the step up into Grp C which at the time was pretty much a Europen team and TWR where the best available outfit at the time.
As far as the look of the grp 44 cars, its as simple as not really liking purple racing cars in my case, the Bud Lite and Castrol cars always pressed more buttons than the Silk cut ones, but the Grp 44 simple white and green is a classic.
The Grp 44 car was basic, all the cars where then, the original 956 was pretty straight forward in design. There is no telling what the Grp 44 team would have come up with next given a chance.
However the best thing about the Jags was noise, and that was the same no matter which side of the Atlantic it came from
-
Don't remember if it was that specific chassis #, but they had a group 44 Jag in the classics tent at Sebring last year.
-
Don't remember if it was that specific chassis #, but they had a group 44 Jag in the classics tent at Sebring last year.
That's the JAG I looked at too, Chop.
I agree about the colours, purple was all wrong until the very last all-purple scheme on the XJR16. I always thought the TWR cars should have had a predominantly green colour scheme. However, green is also the colour of the phlegm that Silk Cut smoker's cough up every morning, so from a marketing point of view it probably wasn't a winner. As for the noise, at waking-up time, the Silk Cut smoker sounded like an XJR12 warming up in the garage. And don't talk to me about Rothmans....
-
I freely admit to being biased toward Group 44, for no other reason than I spent years watching the Group 44 team grow from a small group of dedicated club racers into a battle hardened polished team. They were campaigning TR-7's and all sorts of production cars before becoming one of the top IMSA GTP efforts. Other thing to remember is that the XJR-4/5 design dates back to the very early eighties, before the widespread use of carbon fiber in prototypes so as Nordic said, would have been interesting to see what they would have come up with had they been given the nod. All that said I was quite fond of the TWR cars too, hated the later Bud Light IMSA color scheme though.

Hey Chris 24, nice job finding a photo. I saw the #22 running in the GP of San Antonio back in the late 80's and it was fast but not able to finish with the 962's. I thought is was the best looking car in the race at that time and even prettier than the Jags.
They had a v12 and the brand new turbo 6 running and it was quiet a race until the 12 crashed and sent what looked like carbon fiber all over the place. I believe the turbo 6 had trouble, don't remember if it finished or not. But it was fun to watch the venerable 12 being challenged by this upstart "little brother". It could have been a Jag day had a little luck been with them.
I met Al Hobert, Dereck Bell, and Chip Robinson at the race. Nice gentlemen and very approachable for the fans. To me, that's what separates these guys to make them special as great race drivers compared to the prima donnas at other venues.

Taken in the Hendrick museum in August 2004. I have many detail shots from my first visit there in 1997 also but these are on print and not digital.

-
Blimey, we've got the painters in!
Lee, your work looks very nice indeed, I'm sure you're quite rightly very proud of it, and it's a reminder about how much difference the livery design can make to the aesthetics of a car. It's all a matter of personal taste I know, but did anyone think the DeWAlt design on the TVRs a couple of year ago was anything but awful? I can see Porches are your thing, and I have a signed Tony Smith of the Shell 962 Silk Cut Jag battle of 1987 hanging in my office. For me, that Shell paint scheme was the best I've seen on a 962.
Despite the Jag hysteria, I have to admit, when no-ones listening, that I considered the Silk Cut livery to be a bit awkward, what was that mustard yellow stripe all about? They came good in the end though with the all purple scheme used on their last visit to LM, that looked fantastic.
Great stuff mate and best of luck on your book sales, I hope you all enjoy Sebring!

Interesting that most people seem to have a dislike for the Silk Cut color scheme. Apparently its a opinion shared by some design experts as well. Recently in Motor Sport (I think it was MS?) they had a review of the best & worst all time motor racing sponser jobs by experts in the field and the TWR Silk Cut scheme was considered a disaster by all.
I never thought the silk cats looked that bad. Personally I thought most of the Benetton F1 cars of the ninties looked like someone threw-up on them. I like the "keep it simple stupid" theory, JPS Lotus, Parmalat Brabham, Penzoil Penske Indycars, etc.
Fax
-
Wahayy, Hans up!
That reminds me...
Well, I say "reminds me", but some of the details are a bit vague. It was during the Friday night before the race (in the last year of the old pits/paddock, 1990?) and me and a couple of mates, having narrowly escaped the clutches of the Beausejour Butcher, found ourselves wandering among the team tents in the paddock, in a terrible state of dishevelment. We stumbled over the factory Porsche tent and struck up a conversation, using the international male language of hand signs, hicoughing, farting and inane grinning, with the lone night watchman. He had been left to keep an eye on the cars while the rest of the Porsche team slumbered, and we soon established that in true German fashion, he was keen on a drop of beer, something that we had lots of, and he had been trusted with none. For a few bottles he let us in the tent and gave us a tour of the cars, and I can proudly say that my arse was the penultimate visitor to Derek Bells seat.
Derek, if you're reading this, I'm so very sorry.

Fax, you've got me scratching my head now, but I think it may well have been 88. I remember it was a Porsche factory team, not Joest or Brun, and that there was a lot of red and yellow around - I tried to barter the watchmans overalls off him for another beer or two, but he wouldn't have it. Not sure if they had any spare cars or not off the top of my head, will have to go home and consult the old Ken Wells book.

Chris,
I didn't think it looked too bad either, but it just looked odd to most Americans because we're so used to seeing Matt Kenseth's NASCAR Chevy in those same colors. I showed a photo of the TVR to a buddy of mine who's a die-hard NASCAR fan and he remarked "What the hell is it? A hatchback?"

Have to remember that to a helluva lot of Americans, when they think of a British car they think of a wheezing, rusting MGB that goes on two cylinders every time you hit a puddle or a hideously expensive Jag or Rolls they'll never be able to afford.

I liked them. I thought the purple & orange livery was tight, too.

Here's another from the same 2001 Road America vintage meet. It seems like the number has been changed, as the photo site only lists # 33's. The sale sheet listed it as an ex-Alesi car and if I recall, the asking price was $375,000.
I offerred my daughter in trade but they said they could only accept girls 18 or older. ;)

Wonder if thats the same chassis that turned into a rolling bonfire on Dominic Dobson during the '89 24 Hours. Think he was sharing the Takefuji car with Alesi and Will Hoy.

Jesus Lee, I have just been searching through your site and found all sorts of treasures. Many that i have seen before but hadn't realised who the artist was.
I had the Earnhardt tribute wallpaper on my desk top for ages and never knew who made it.
Have you considered putting a book together of your work like Sam Bass has done.
I really like the Al Unser Jnr Valvoline painting and the Bud / Castrol Jag Sebring painting. Are these available as posters or prints ?
See you at Sebring soon.
-
I have posters of the Valvoline/Little Al
(http://www.selfstudio.com/images/portfolio/h2o_1.jpg)
the Bud/Castrol is the art from the Sebring '88 race poster.

I still have a few of those left. Like I said above. I'll be sure to bring
some posters with me out to Turn 10.
25 days till the gates open. woo-hoo

Great shots of the 935's, like the look of your book as well.
Prefer the Joest 935 or the K4 to the K3, but impresive cars, none the less.
Do you recall the smell of them when they went past, very different to any thing else.
Good as the Aston or Corvette etc are, these where much better.

I know nostalgia is not what it used to be, but aren't these cars wonderful. I'd rather have one 935 or 962 that a dozen Audis. Brilliant pictures too
-
Disagree Lorry,
Nostalgia is everything when it comes to motor racing for me. The sport as a whole is a pathetic shadow of what it once was. The ALMS and Moto GP come the closest to reminding me of the way things used to be. As you said give me a grid full of 962's, 935's & BMW 320 turbos over today's Audi's, and the rest anyday. In those days (seventies through mid-eighties) you saw the cars & drivers on the limit, today everyone drones around on rails, they may very well be on the limit, but the theater is gone. Racing was all about the senses, visual, smells & sounds.
Its all a made for TV extravangaza now.

Quite so Fax, but in 10 -15 years time some will look back at the Audi's and appreciate them along side the Group C's, 956's etc, time moves on and we will all have our favourites.

Hi Lee,
Thanks for the picture of the old pits... just as i remember them. I like the new ones too but do miss just being able to dash up the stairs to the roof.

IRW,
There are certainly some things about todays sport that people will look back on and think "those were the days"
But I doubt (in my eyes anyway) it will be the Audi's. We would have had some damn good racing over the past four or five years without them around.

Late to the thread here Lee, but I have to say your talent is stunning. What you have managed to capture goes far beyond the visual sense alone - I can hear those cars and there's a hint of racing fuel in the air just looking at the beautiful renderings. Hats off to you man!
Looking forward to tipping a few next month ('though no road toad this time).
