Hi guys anybody know which is the best map to buy for the Le Mans area ? so that we can creep about and hopefully not get too lost trying to miss the trafic/route baree etc???

Probably a Michelin city map, for sale at petrol stations as aproaching Le Mans...

In and around town a map is a bit academic this year due to the massive scale of roadworks where they are building the tram system. But to answer your question, there is a French map series called Serie Bleue (like our Ordnance Surey) , and number 1719E covers LM town and the track area at 1:25000. It doesn't show street names though, if that's what you are after. I think I got my via the internet for a fiver or so.

thats great , its just so that I can navigate around the area with a little confidence and have an idea where I'm going cheers ;D

Another map option you could try (maybe to navigate around all the traveaux ;)) is the Blay-Foldex series, Le Mans et Environs, catalogue number 64-5692LF. This is 1:12000 scale and does have street names.

If you want the Serie Bleu maps, or the lager scale vert, you can order them online from Stanfords, just google.
