Time moves on, the Viper, great car that it was would not be on the pace of the 550's let alone the Astons and Vette's.
When the 550 came along the Viper was outpaced, without any works money it contined to fall behind, then the original model was dropped by dodge and the new car has yet to make it onto the track in GT1.

Those are GT2 cars though (basically road cars) not GT1 (or GTS as it was in the Viper's day) that are carbon fibre bodies / custom chassis.
-
That is why I said GT not GT1 or GT2 as I couldn't remember, not long before there will be a GTS version. It ran very well in GT2.
-
ta very much its just I love the sound of those truck engines......shame oh well at least the vettes will make the hair on the back of my neck tinggle ( must be a fetish !!!!)
-
GT3 if I am not wrong. ;)
-
Whatever they were nice ;D
-
the reason is because corvette r racing and dodge really dont want to lose to corvette

I disagree. the viper was dominant when Corvette came along. Corvette have since raised the bar. Corvette have factory support and the Vipers were developed by private teams with very little help from Chrysler. Take over by Daimler probably did not help either as Mercedes is into F1 which most of us here don't care for anymore.

I get this feeling that in (not many) years, the original Viper will be one of those cars which makes us go all whistful ans weepy eyed. It just has that look and 'feel'.
As an oldie who has been at Le Mans for ever I have a few cars which already fit the bill.
Porsche 935K3 (has to be a Kremer car nothing else)
Any 956
The Kouros Sauber Mercedes (best livery ever?)
Any car run by Alain de Cadenet under his own name.
It's funny but Audi doesn't quite fit the bill....
Any other iconic cars?
"The Old Git"

"The Old Git"
Got to be the GT40s and the Porsche 917
Both cars are always mentioned in any documentarys about Le Mans
-
agree with the Kouros merc.. but always liked the sauber silver arrows for some reason.. and the screeeeeching mazda 8)
-
Yeah OK. Sort of forgot the Jags! Do you remember the really cool BRG one that TWR ran in 1987(?) for, amongst others, Jeff Krosnoff? It was the year when they entered five cars.
I was at the Goodwood FoS and saw a Rothmans 962 and came over all wistful. I really never thought that it could happen. Do you think we will get watery eyed over the Bentley/Audi in years to come?

Yup spect so...I always thought the Bentley was a really pretty car regardless of the fact that we all knew it was a green Audi :D

I know it has been said already, but for me personally the Tom Walkinshaw era Jags have a special place in my affections.
A relative of mine was involved in the selling of TWR assests for the receiver after the company's demise...
Just showing me the pictures of various XJR 9s, 11s etc in differing states of 'undress' being made ready for sale and filling an entire warehouse was enough to set me off on a wave of nostalgia... those were the days when the crew I visited Le Mans with each year was at its largest... the passage of time since having reduced numbers somewhat. Still, I and other member of the crew have now introduced the latest generation of Le Mans visitors.
I doubt though that they will view the Audi's with the same affection I view the Jags...
Do German fans of Le Mans feel towards Audi the way we Brits felt towards those TWR Jags..?

Ahh those 1980's weren’t they something to behold. I remember virtually blubbing in 86 when all that was left of the TWR challenge on the Sunday morning was a few skid marks and some oil stains on the floor of the pits.......oh and the hand written graffiti sign can't remember the exact words but 'We'll be back' covers the sentiment………happy days. ;D

Any Jaguars should be included I'd say ;D
Any? Even the rather nasty XJ220C as driven by one D Coulthard? I never had much time for it really. Having said that I was annoyed when the ACO disqualified it from 1st in class in 93(?) on some very flimsy pretext as I recall.
I had a massive lump in my throat in 1988, not to mention some grit in my eye, on what remains one of the finest days of my life. Similarly I was unexpectedly emotional when Bentley crossed the line in 03. I never expected it to get me, what with it being a green nearly-Audi and all that, but it was a wonderful sight to behold after all those years of Le Mans history.
-
And with 'Wee David' very much at the begining of his career TWR even spelt his name wrong on the side of the car! From memory it was COULTARD.

Agree with all the choices made so far. However I would just like to say that any 935, not just the K3, be it the most basic 78 car right up to the Moby Dick car will always stir my blood like few others.
The WM's of the 80's sould also be mentioned. Little in the way of money yet also turned up with pretty decent cars. they seemed to be there for the love of it, just like me.
Other cars -
BMW M1 for its amazing noise.
Porsche 936, it always looked graceful
McLaren F1, the last road car to win LM, and Ferrari F40 for trying.
The more I think about it, this list could go on & on!
-
all i want to say is that dodge vipers r ace!!!!

Sorry to say that I loved that car at the time and still have a picture of it on my wall at home, it was disqualified because it had a dodgy catalytic converter (or none at all) something to do with the exhaust system anyway I think. :D

Your memories of that day are obviously very similar to mine Andy. I reckon it was all the waving flags that kicked-up the dust storm... we weren't really all crying!

I know what you mean but it was just such a let down after the TWR Jags. And I always thought it was very ugly for a supercar, the overhangs were massive and the engine (from the Austin Rover MG Metro) sounded not a patch on when it was at full chat in the forest in non-turbo trim. I guess I was just a bit deflated by it really.

Yes I know what you mean Andy it was a come down from the big Cats. But any Jag was better than none at all I guess. I think there was a certain amount of mystique surrounding the car if that is the right word. I remember them being announced for sale and causing a surprising level of demand, prior to them actually being available. So much so that large cash deposits were demanded when the cars were reserved and city types and the like actually traded the reservations among themselves, making a profit selling the option!! A certain ‘black day’ on the stock market put pay to the city bonus's around that time and in the end I understand that many of the sales were never completed. Hence I never actually saw one on the road.
-
Also it was originally supposed to have a 5.0 litre V12 and a 4x4 drive system when the deposits were accepted by Jag. It ended up as a 3.0 litre V6 turbo with only two wheel drive and the price had double from the original quote, much to the delight of many of the City punters who saw the changes as a very good opportunity to opt out of their contracts thank you very much. This dragged through the courts for absolutly years. I wonder if all the law suits have been finalised yet?

If it's only Vipers you want to talk about, you might want to check out http://www.viperalley.com/ or http://www.dodgetalk.com/forums/archive/index.php/f-145.html. Enjoy!

If you don't care about other peoples opinions then isn't it rather pointless to ask for them? Unless of course you just want people to agree with you, in which case you should look on the forums posted by Pieter. The rules of this site dictate healthy debate, disagreement, childish name-calling and topics that NEVER stay on thread.
-
i also want to talk about le mans not just vipers and i am already a member of those forums anyway thanks for tellin me tho :)
-
i didnt ask for his opinion.
and i havent read the rules yet so i will read them now

By posting a topic, you ask for everybody's opinion, don't you?

This has all the hallmarks of another Moped Boy affair. ::)
Young enthusiastic chap comes along and very soon he rubs several of the more cynical members up the wrong way and before you know it the site degenerates into pages of abuse.
I guess kids are not suitably equipped for a conversation with a Harper or a Zarse.
How about a training course Smokie?
Anyway, has anyone seen my badger?
-
whats a training course ???
-
Something you should take apperently. ;D
-
i will take one.
-
thats told you ;D
Am I bothered..?
I do think it a little presumptious of the little whipper-snapper to think he knows whether I care about his opinions or not... gets annoyed easily too...
-
Just re-read the PM I sent you earlier..
-
i didnt post the topic i just said please can we get back on the topic of vipers
