Title: Speedferries 2006
Post by: smokie on June 21, 2006, 05:10:36 pm
Many of you already know this...

I was booked on Speedferries as Car Only, then borrowed a moderate sized trailer so changed the booking to With Trailer.

On arrival in Dover they decided thy needed to measure my lerngth (oo'er) and declared I was 0.2m over the 7m limit.

I suppose rules are rules but I was a bit miffed that my £88 crossing shot up to £240 with SeaFrance.

I know DelBoy suffered the same fate as I met him on the SeaFrance boat. He was 0.6 over the limit, IIRC.

My theory is that they were overbooked and needed to interpret rules strictly...

btw this happened on Sunday 11th. On Tuesday a refund arrived from Speedferries and the covering letter apologized for the delay...

You rember correctly, Smokie - 7.6m.

My outbound route went from £39 to £120.

I banked my SF booking as I will need it when (when??) I go to get my caravan.

Well.....I had a lucky scrape with Speedferries on Tuesday.Pulled up at the kiosk and the lad there started to process the booking when this lady of the "ethnic minority "stuck he head through the window and said"I think you are overloaded. You will have to go on the weighbridge",my comment to her was ,"I've only got camping gear in the van how can I be overloaded."

Anyway, off I went and got the weigh ticket and managed to board without any other probs.

Mind you we did have 2 very large fridges,2 bbq's genny,5 tents etc

I must agree with Smokie  it does seem that they were being complete a***holes and should be taken to task over it!!!

My mate Andy was booked on Speedferries with his cobra (4.2 metres - 13.75 feet) but turned up in the 1964 Cadillac (5.8 metres - 19 feet)

Nothing was said regarding the longer car.

Cadillac (5.8 metres - 19 feet)  Nothing was said regarding the longer car.

He was still under the 7 metre limit tho!  ::)

Having used SF for first time this year, I would say in their defence that the internal turning for loading and unloading cars is VERY tight and anything oversized could really bugger it up!  I followed a TVR Tuscan unloading and he had to reverse on every bend - bet his arms were hanging by the time he got out!!  ;D

About 2.5m of my 7.2m was detachable and easily manoeuverable by hand...they didn't seem interested in a hand job though...  ::)
