Title: Sky Festival - Manchester 11 - 13 August Post by: Fran on August 10, 2006, 04:10:58 pm Anyone coming to Manchester for this?
www.skyfestival.co.uk Whats the chance of a wet circuit!!! ;D F Title: Re: Sky Festival - Manchester 11 - 13 August Post by: Muzorewa on August 11, 2006, 09:06:29 am The wife & kids are going today to recce the venue, then we'll all go on Sunday to see whatever happens. If you attempt to get tickets they're all gone, must be for temporary stands, but I can't see how they can prevent you getting somewhere near.
BBC forecast for Sunday is rain, surprisingly enough ::) Title: Re: Sky Festival - Manchester 11 - 13 August Post by: Fran on August 11, 2006, 10:28:56 am Ticketing is just for other parts of the event, the artsy fartsy things like dancing and film workshops.... not the bit with the cars! Shame the MTV Pimp My Ride Party is fully booked ... 8)
I shall wander down there after work tonight and try and locate a beer tent! Will also try and find out the actual route the cars will be taking cos I dont see that on the website. Drivers will be doing 70 mph long before they reach the end of Cross Street and brake hard for the first left-hander into Princess Street.
They will have time to reach only 40 mph before the right-hand hairpin into Lloyd Street, past the town tall and down to a right-hander into Deansgate, where they will be back at 70 mph again in seconds. After turning into St Mary's Gate, they will accelerate past Marks and Spencer to begin another lap. Although the 3.4 litre, 550bhp cars are capable of reaching 60 mph in three seconds and 100 mph in five - with a top speed of more than 200mph - safety considerations will keep speeds down and lap times are expected to be about two minutes. There will be emergency run-offs at each bend and first aid posts throughout the course." Title: Re: Sky Festival - Manchester 11 - 13 August Post by: Fran on August 11, 2006, 11:34:40 am they will accelerate past Marks and Spencer Not sure why but that bit makes me chuckle! ;D Thanks for the info. F Could be for one of two reasons - 1. To avoid the anti-war protesters / Big Issue sales-operatives who seem to regularly congregate there 2. To avoid being scared shitless by the prices in Selfridges Title: Re: Sky Festival - Manchester 11 - 13 August Post by: Fran on August 11, 2006, 11:51:24 am LOL could be - or the smell of "Lush"!
Having said that, it could be a decent viewing area with that bit of raised pavement, also I think the M&S coffee shop might get a good view too. F Title: Re: Sky Festival - Manchester 11 - 13 August Post by: Muzorewa on August 11, 2006, 11:59:04 am Indeed, what price standing room on the glass bridge between M&S and the Arndale? ;D
Come to think of it, isn't there a speed hump there? ??? Title: Re: Sky Festival - Manchester 11 - 13 August Post by: Fran on August 11, 2006, 01:03:49 pm Yes, I think its one of those raised pedestrian crossings!!
I am terrified of that glass bridge, always makes me think of those finger traps... where the more u pull away the tighter it gets!!! (no doubt Steve Brown can source a pic to demonstrate what i mean - he has been a bit lax since his promotion to Blue Mod tho) ::) F Title: Re: Sky Festival - Manchester 11 - 13 August Post by: Bob U on August 11, 2006, 01:13:46 pm Will this do?
Title: Re: Sky Festival - Manchester 11 - 13 August Post by: Fran on August 11, 2006, 01:25:53 pm :o - eeek!
Thats it exactly - I must have been traumatised by one as a child. Its the kinda thing my dad would have brought back from a trip abroad... :-\ F Title: Re: Sky Festival - Manchester 11 - 13 August Post by: Steve Pyro on August 11, 2006, 04:05:23 pm Yes, I think its one of those raised pedestrian crossings!! At least you are there looking out for us. Sometimes. Finger traps how do they work? Why? What ever for? Now I'm scared too... ??? Title: Re: Sky Festival - Manchester 11 - 13 August Post by: Fran on August 12, 2006, 04:07:06 pm Finger traps how do they work? Why? What ever for? You put your finger (or someone else's) in each end and then you are stuck - the more you try n pull away the tighter it gets! Why? - just to torment small children I think. 8) Title: Re: Sky Festival - Manchester 11 - 13 August Post by: Perdu on August 12, 2006, 07:37:18 pm Finger traps how do they work? Why? What ever for? The rain managed to hold off, tho the route was a bit damp n puddled in places. I stayed right away from the chinese finger trap and watched on the corner of Lloyd St/Deansgate where the drivers stopped and did burn ups along the long straight, a good few fishtailing as they hit the potholes n puddles!!
And the noise bouncing between the buildings... ouchy! Team NED wasnt there, but GBR was giving it loads for the home crowds! Team USA car was there for photo ops (I didnt dare try it in case I got my a*se stuck in the seat) but they didnt do the laps. Rounded it off with a nice drink in the "beach bar" in Albert Square. If it wasnt for the drizzle blowing off the fountain and the cloud of black smoke drifting across from Salford I could have amost been in Jamaica!! ::) F P.S. Kept a look out for you Muzorewa, but didnt see anyone who looked familiar. Managed to get Robbie Kerr's autograph as well. Like you say, noise pretty impressive!
