Title: Britcar This Weekend @ Silverstone.
Post by: rcutler on August 14, 2006, 11:56:07 pm
OK so is anyone else thinking of going to Britcar, it is on the 9th and 10th of September.

24 hour race at Silverstone should be fun in september and lets hope it is drier then previous years.

I seem to remember seeing that the only campsite is Whittlebury Hall. I was not that impressed with it but we were on the outfield. If there are lots of people then the owners open up the better field for camping.

I am definately up for it, who else?

Whittlebury Hall is the ONLY campsite. For Booking and information ring:- 01327 858092

A 24 hour race? Hm, tempting... what kind of cars will be driving?

That is what the website said! We all know that the faclities are worse, it will rain and it is a lot more expensive.

I have declined the opportunity to attend and I agree with “piglet” and think a public flogging for suggesting the Silverstone 24 is anything like Le Mans.

If you want to see a UK 24 with great atmosphere and a true sense of fun do the 2CV 24 at Snetterton!!!!.

This race is like LM only in that it lasts for 24 hours. Lots of saloon cars and Porsches I think there were 80 cars starting last year! I went last year in the rain and I think there was a total crowd of about 100. However I still thought it was great fun. There was limited catering so take your own food and beer. You can wonder round the circuit and enjoy some great viewing. I think the weekend ticket is £25.00 so shouldn't break the bank. I had promised myself that I would go this year too but Mrs Monkey has booked us a holiday in Greece, so I will not be attending.

I hope that some of you do go, I really think that the enthusiasm shown by the organisers for the concept of endurance racing really does deserve support.
 ;D

For those with Sky sports, check out this weeks World Motorsport , there was a fantastic package on last nights show of the race at Brands, good close racing throughout the classes. 8)

Not camped at Silverstone for ages, whats it like ???

Recomendations appreciated   :)

Not sure if camping at Silverstone is avaliable, if there is:-there are little or no facilities on the infield.

The alternative is to use Whittlebury Hall that is walking distance but it is not cheap. There are showers and toilets though.

I will try to find out what the situation is.

CAMPING IS NOT AVALIABLE AT SILVERSTONE!

EERC entry lists are not always very reliable.  They seem to lose entries before the event.

Re parking I'd imagine that means no parking "over the bridge" so just using the outer tarmac carparks and not the inner carparking for punters.  This is often the case for events like FIA GT's etc.

Title: Re: Britcar 9-10th Sept Silverstone.
Post by: skid solo on August 16, 2006, 03:29:37 pm
You couldn't get your cars into the main entrance last year so it was a pain having to effectivly leave the circuit and go to the exterior car parks to get anything out of your car.
Silverstone very rarely let you get your car through the main gate into the circuit these days unless it is a little clubbie.
Getting them in but not over the bridge would be fine.

Yes that's what I mean, not over the first bridge (so perhaps correctly not over Bridge).  It's a big meeting (in space terms) and I imagine that the inside of the circuit will be filled with teams and support race teams.  I believe that there are plans for more entertainment than last year and that will also take up space in the centre.

No last year you could not get through the main entrance at all, you were forced to park in the car park to the right which meant that you had to leave the 'circuit' to get anything from your car. Also, annoying was the fact that there were no  car parks open at all down at Stowe, so if you wanted to view down there then you had to walk. Also all the grandstands on the hanger were roped off but I seem to remember getting onto the seats at Stowe corner. As for camping, if I had been going this year, I would be tempted to carry in my stuff and set up down behind the vale, or at Stowe. All the toilet blocks were open, so though not ideal, because the crowd was so small and most likely will be this year, then you would be comfortable enough for one night anyhow.

Sorry, I'm clearly not making sense!! (and I was sober!).

Yes not "over Bridge" will leave you parking in the carparks outside the security gate.  My point is that there is nothing much unusual about that though, it's the way that most big meetings are run.  Skid Solo seemed to be wanting info about what that meant and I was trying to point out that "not taking cars into the circuit" only meant using the outer carparks not the grand prix type "park in Northampton" set up.

I'll get me coat  :(

I emailed Siverstone yesterday about the parking arrangements and had this reply:-

Hi

I have checked with our Event Manager and you will be able to drive in although not into the centre areas.

Many thanks and I hope you enjoy the event.

Sheila

Looks like we can get behind the grandstands and around the circuit, which is good news.

That is good news!! Good to hear that Silverstone are being a bit more flexible for a change. Now I really do wish I was going :-[ It will be really interesting to see how many spectators turn out to see it, as I mentioned in an earlier post (and I was not kidding) I put the 'crowd' at around 100-200 last year. But I think it is really encouraging that the event is getting a mention here at CA this year and hope that it is an indication of much better levels of support, I really think the event deserves it. ;D

I have heard that there was a grand total of.....................(drum roll)........................93 paying spectators.

I was in the pit grandstand at stupid o'clock and there was 4 other people in not just the pit granstand but all of the grandstands round Woodcote. :o

Still a great event though and shall look forward to it this year. ;D

It's not a question of wanting, my friend. It's the lack of funds and days off. There's always next year though.

For what it is worth Skid I was one of the others, sat right at the back near the commentary box. Might be worth mentioning there was radio commentary for most of the race and this was broadcast on the web too I believe. 93!! Sorry about the over estimate on my earlier post ;D

Hi all,

Went to this last year and thought it was a great event, can`t wait to go again, fortunatley a mate of mine has one of the paddock suites which overlooks the pit entrance, this is where we slept last year, not the most comfy of experiences but after a a few gallons of san miguel it was good enough.
see you there

Enjoy yourselves all - can't join in, as we will be racing in the BORC this weekend round Walter's Arena, Rheola and Resolfen in South Wales, otherwise I'd be there.   Looks like the makings of a good weekend, whatever the racing is like!   Weather forecast looks pretty good for this weekend too....

Yes once again Mark, good luck and WHY do we have to have all the good Motorsport on the same weekends.

Donnington LMES vs British GT's Brands Hatch
Le Mans vs Ring 24 hours
Britcar vs Offroad

I am sure that list can be added to! (probably corrected to though)

Just checked the weather forecast for the weekend and it is looking really good. As I mentioned earlier in the thread I really wish I was able to get to this event this year, the more support it gets the more chance there is of it becoming a regular part of the UK motor racing calendar. For all those going, I hope it is every bit as enjoyable as it was last year. I will repeat a word of warning however, last year the catering was virtually non existent and given the low turn out then, I can only assume that the caterers would be nervous about turning up again for this event. So probably best to carry some food and beer rations with you just in case. Enjoy.  ;D >:(

Right, I am now working on Saturday in London! Bugger but it will pay for the weekend!

I expect I will arrive at the circuit at 1900. I know I will miss the start and all the support races but it should still be fun!

Any results ? The Britcar 24hs site doesn't show anything and the live timing is switched off.

Thanks for the results, geoffd.

It was their first race in the new Z4, so not bad at all. Or did they enter the car in a VLN round before ?

Oh sh!t... Rollcentre is a DNF despite setting the fastest lap time of the race. It looks like they collect all the bad luck this season. Anyone know what happened ?

Good to see Willie on the podium, though.

Fuel pressure problems which dogged it throughout the race.  Finally conked out at Luffield but it had spent hours in the garage before this.

From what Shorty told me at about 11.30pm, They had a fuel problem in the first hour, blocked the fuel injectors with metal fileings! Then the wiring loom burnt through! He was not a happy chap, but he liked the cakes we dropped round.

I belive it was the BMW's 1st outing, but was basicly a factory effort, wich I throught was not quite in the sprite of the event. But it was a great day and we were able to wander in and out of garages and chat to the teams.

Though three and half hours safty car was not a lot of fun, but there was a a real pea souper of fog in the morning. The safty car was out for so long they had to bring it in and re-fuel it, I belive it was classed as being 23rd!!!!!

Oh dear poor RollCenter!

List of problems too long to list!!!

Metal in the fuel-   (Officials to investigate)
More then a fair share of Gearbox faults.

Hindy clearly stated that the team was recieving more then their share of bad luck! Lots of credit to the team as they were still out running the car all night and up until the 2200 hours time. When the car was running in the early morning they were over 300laps down!! BUT they still continued to race on untill the car finally finished itself off.

My credit goes to:-

RollCenter for the "Most Determined Effort"
Duller BMW for "bloody hell watch out Maser and Aston!"
Sawer and Trident "Buying a Golf GT TDI, finding the engine is knackered, buying a second hand one from a Scrap dealer and still finishing respectably 3rd in class and 15th overall!

Here is a photo of the winning car after the race. BTW it won with 16 laps clear!!! 6 hours before it was behind the Porsche of 911virgin by 3 laps!

Great weekend. Would have prefered Brands or Donny, but then there will never be enough room for all the teams.

Saw the motorhome parked behind the stands but didn't see you anywhere. Big circuit to have soo few people rattling around on!

Was very envious of you Rick et al.  Good to see they're going to carry on with the event.  Did you see any TV cameras there? - the radio is very frustrating as you can't even hear the cars - the booth seems to be very well soundproofed and Hindy even had problems seeing out of the window. Would be good if somebody had made at least a "round up" programme.

Sorry to have missed you, did keep an eye out for CA shirts. Spent most of Sunday being driven round by young Tom. Who was complaining that he could not heal and toe my Omega! :o

Got back late last night, I met Rick, but didn't get to meet any other CAers who were about.

The Duller BMW. The road car was officially released 4 weeks ago, 2 weeks ago the team phoned up JT/EERC and asked to enter a car - a new car, the thought was that it was new to the team, not to racing.

Damn fine weekend, damn good weather and racing, gallery to come soon but a teaser can be found: here (http://jgphotos-motorsport.fotopic.net/c1079733.html)

You beat me to it!

Bob U, we have started looking into budgets for next years 24 hours race, but it all depends on what Tom does next year and how much F BMW eats at the budget (more than likely, all of it!). We got close to getting Tom a drive in this years race, but could not raise the budget. But it somthing that Tom and us would realy like to do. If we do go ahead all help will be gratefully recived.

Anyone else like to join in?

Ian I think for a few of the teams the demolition derby was in the wee dark hours, dont worry smokie you can get duct/tank tape in most colours, you will never notice............
