Title: Re: heard about richard hammond!!!!!!!!! Post by: Fran on September 20, 2006, 11:34:08 pm Me too, tho "critically injured" doesnt sound good. I rather fancy the small but perfectly formed Hammster. :-*
From Reuters: "Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond was critically injured on Wednesday after crashing in a jet-powered car while filming for the programme, the BBC announced. The 36-year-old presenter was taken by air ambulance to a hospital in Leeds which has a special neurological unit. He had been filming at a former Royal Air Force base when the accident happened. No further details were immediately available." Checking some other reports, apparently he was speaking when he was removed from the car, so that might be better news. Title: Re: heard about richard hammond!!!!!!!!! Post by: nickliv on September 20, 2006, 11:42:52 pm Hope he pulls through, but an unconscious airlift to a neurological hospital doesn't sound encouraging.
Thoughts with his family and friends Title: Re: heard about richard hammond!!!!!!!!! Post by: rcutler on September 20, 2006, 11:45:20 pm I really hope he recovers fully he certainly has risked his life in a few of the Top Gear stunts in the past. News at 1030 was that he is still critical, the drag car was travelling at around 280mph after the land speed record was broken and was running purely for film. The cars parachute inflated to slow the car but the car suddenly vered to the right and overtured. It took ten minutes to cut him free from the wreckage.
Hope he recovers soon. Title: Re: heard about richard hammond!!!!!!!!! Post by: Jason on September 21, 2006, 12:01:05 am Best wishes to RH, I hope it's good news.
News currently is sketchy, but I will say that speculation doesn't help. I've been speaking to a fellow marshal who does rescue, he doubts The Hamster was speaking coherently, more likely garbled, he's just had a severe trauma. Remember it's not the speed of the accident but how quick you stop. Sorry for the bluntness folks, but I try to keep reality in focus, RH is in Critical condition - this is not normally a good sign, it is 50/50. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'm sure the Hamster is a strong one. Hope he gets better and thoughts to his family. All I know is he is in the best place. We moan about the NHS, but they are stiil the best. To be honest, it was a sort inevitable. They have gone more and more wild on their stunts over the last few seasons :-\ Hope RH will be okay... Title: Re: heard about richard hammond!!!!!!!!! It does raise the question of inexerprienced drivers in serious machinery though. He may have driven some quick cars for short periods of time but was it enough to qualify him to be competant enough to dirive a Jet Car at 300mph? Every thing is fine untill it goes wrong and unfortunatly he is suffering the concesquense of beeing in the wrong place at the wrong time. Title: Re: heard about richard hammond!!!!!!!!! Hopefully, he will make a good recovery. Have to say though, TG has looked like a disaster waiting to happen over the last few seasons. I am continually surprised that they get away with some of the strokes they pull. It wasn't too long ago that Noel Tidy Beards bungee jump went wrong. I would have thought that the H&S department at the BBC would have reined TG in a bit. As previously stated, these guys are tv presenters, not stunt men or racing drivers. All said and done, regards to RH and his family. Fingers are firmly crossed. Title: Re: heard about richard hammond!!!!!!!!! Well, it is inherently dangerous, isn't it? Isn't that why there was a fire crew and an ambulance crew "standing by". Things are made more dangerous when a person with little/no experience is doing it. Verging on reckless, IMO. Steve Irwin - a very experienced diver, diving with what is normally a placid creature. Richard Hammond - a very inexperienced jet powered car driver, it would seem, performing beyond his abilities. Sad on both counts. fingers still well crossed. Sad on both counts. fingers still well crossed. Nobby, I wasn't suggeting that driving a Jet Car is not dangerous, of course it is... My comments related to the uniformed comment and analysis in the news reporting of the incident. Steve Irwin - a very experienced diver, diving with what is normally a placid creature. - Killed in an accident by something unexpected... Richard Hammond - a very inexperienced jet powered car driver, it would seem, performing beyond his abilities. - Injured in an accident by something unexpected. At present there has been no information about Hammonds preparation for the drive, but I would be surprised if Colin Fallows let him drive it if he felt it was 'beyond his abilities. You don't just jump into one of these things and fire it off up the runway... That was exactly the reason that Dennis Priddle would not let Maggie Philbin drive the Fuel Streanliner in the Eigthies for Tomorrows World, because he said 'she couldn't handle it'. My point in comparing the two is that, because there are cars involved the reporting is different. If Irwin had been killed by a crocodile, not a stingray I don't think there would have been the same sanctimonious, 'Holier than thou', "What is the point of what he was doing" rubbish that was on the phone in show I was listening to this morning. Good luck Hamster... Title: Re: heard about richard hammond!!!!!!!!! The so called witness was on GMTV, said he was a racing driver instructor at Elvington. My one gripe with all this was going to work this morning I have never seen so much press and all the vans that go with them outside Leeds General Infirmary. I know it's news but I think it insensitive for all the family, ok report what has happened, but please let the family get on with things. Post by: Steve Pyro on September 22, 2006, 10:01:55 am Very true.
Another woefully underfunded air ambulance service, operating in my neighbourhood. http://www.essexairambulance.co.uk/ Some notes from the website - It is never more than eight minutes flying time from any one of the major hospitals in Essex flying at a speed of 160 miles per hour. Operational seven days a week, the Air Ambulance flies on average 3-5 missions a day, and so far, over 6,000 missions have been flown since the service was commissioned. The Essex Air Ambulance Trust is a registered charity and is not funded by either the NHS or Government. The total costs for this valuable life-saving service has to be found from charitable donations from the general public and local businesses. The Essex Air Ambulance Trust needs in excess of £105,000 each month to keep the helicopter fully operational. The bottom line is, no money, no Air Ambulance! Title: Re: heard about richard hammond!!!!!!!!! Post by: Radar on September 22, 2006, 10:10:13 am Best wishes to the Hamster, hope he recovers soon. That driving a dragster breaches the Health and Safety at Work Act?
It'll be interesting to see how the beeb respond. A characteristically spineless response would be to cancel the show, but it attracts a lot of viewers and BBC managers are ratings junkies. Or they could follow Transport 2000's suggestion of a programme about "sensible cars being driven sensibly". Well, that'll bring in the viewers! Title: Re: heard about richard hammond!!!!!!!!! Clarkson, a Sun columnist, said in the newspaper: "In the wee small hours of Thursday night, just 30 hours after what is almost certainly the world's fastest ever car crash, Richard Hammond suddenly sat up in bed, opened his eyes and asked what had happened. "You've been in a car accident," I said. "Was I driving like a t**t?' he asked. Before getting out of bed and walking shakily to the lavatory." Hammond had not lost his sense of humour and, according to The Sun, said to his other co-presenter James May, also visiting him in hospital: "Hello c**kface." Title: Re: heard about richard hammond!!!!!!!!! Post by: redstu on September 24, 2006, 01:59:59 pm Top Gear new series postponed
Read this earlier Quote LONDON (Reuters) - The BBC is to indefinitely postpone the new series of Top Gear until presenter Richard Hammond has recovered from the brain injuries he suffered in a high-speed crash. The next series had been due to begin on October 8. "We would not think of finalising plans for the next series without discussing it with everyone involved," the BBC said in a statement. "When it is suitable, the team will do this and we will announce a new transmission date." Hammond, 36, was moved from a high dependency ward to a side-room on a general ward at Leeds General Infirmary on Saturday. "He is continuing to do well," a hospital spokesman told Reuters on Sunday. Hammond was seriously injured on Wednesday when he crashed a jet-powered dragster as he accelerated towards 300 mph in a feature being filmed for the BBC show. With the accident being jointly investigated by police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Top Gear Producer Andy Wilman threatened to quit if the BBC made any attempt to tone down the programme's emphasis on speed and extreme stunts. "You either do the show you or you walk away," Wilman told The Observer newspaper on Sunday. Hammond's co-host Jeremy Clarkson also rejected criticism of Top Gear's format. "Next week I intend to be down on the track driving faster than ever," Clarkson told The Observer. "It's what we do." Meanwhile Hammond well-wishers have donated over 134,000 pounds to a charity for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, which air-lifted the Top Gear presenter to hospital after Wednesday's crash. Get well soon Richard - The public needs programs like top gear. Title: Re: heard about richard hammond!!!!!!!!!
