Me too, tho "critically injured" doesnt sound good. I rather fancy the small but perfectly formed Hammster. :-*

Checking some other reports, apparently he was speaking when he was removed from the car, so that might be better news.

I really hope he recovers fully he certainly has risked his life in a few of the Top Gear stunts in the past. News at 1030 was that he is still critical, the drag car was travelling at around 280mph after the land speed record was broken and was running purely for film. The cars parachute inflated to slow the car but the car suddenly vered to the right and overtured. It took ten minutes to cut him free from the wreckage.
Hope he recovers soon.

I'm sure the Hamster is a strong one. Hope he gets better and thoughts to his family.

Oh dear. Presume this is the end of all nice "stunty-things" done by the presentors of TG.

Got me there. D'oh! However he was speaking as somone who has been to a jetcar incident.
Early news is that RH is now Stable, that is promising, we can only hope he improves from here.

Here's hoping for a speedy recovery, sounds like he is improving, so all the best.
It does raise the question of inexerprienced drivers in serious machinery though. He may have driven some quick cars for short periods of time but was it enough to qualify him to be competant enough to dirive a Jet Car at 300mph? Every thing is fine untill it goes wrong and unfortunatly he is suffering the concesquense of beeing in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Very sorry for the little shinny toothed one.
Hopefully, he will make a good recovery.
Have to say though, TG has looked like a disaster waiting to happen over the last few seasons.

What is amazing is the low standard of reporting that has been applied to this..The BBC Breakfast news presenter this moring, describing the whole thing as a 'Stunt', which implies a lack of preparedness, then they interview a guy from 'Fast Car' magazine who procedes to describe a Jet Dragster.. (Something that he has obviously never seen) as 'Inherently unstable and something that you just hang onto and try to keep going in a straight line' Driving into work and they interviwed Quentin Wilson on the radio who said, 'What you have to understand about this type of 'rocket' (his word not mine) powered car is that the track at the front is really narrow to cut down on the wind resistance so the steering is not what it could be and when something goes wrong you have no control and are just an accident waiting to happen' Have news researchers never heard of the likes of Martin Hill, Roger Goring or even Ronnie Picardo who have driven these things for years and could at least give some kind of informed opinion rather than spouting rubbish about something they know nothing about. Or is it just sloppy? Another observation.... Steve Irwin, Killed by a Stingray making a wildlife program..... The reporting is all about how tragic it was and what a great man he was... Isn't that why there was a fire crew and an ambulance crew "standing by".
Things are made more dangerous when a person with little/no experience is doing it. Verging on reckless, IMO.
Steve Irwin - a very experienced diver, diving with what is normally a placid creature.
Richard Hammond - a very inexperienced jet powered car driver, it would seem, performing beyond his abilities.
Sad on both counts.

Nobby, I wasn't suggeting that driving a Jet Car is not dangerous, of course it is...
My comments related to the uniformed comment and analysis in the news reporting of the incident.

At present there has been no information about Hammonds preparation for the drive, but I would be surprised if Colin Fallows let him drive it if he felt it was 'beyond his abilities.
You don't just jump into one of these things and fire it off up the runway...
That was exactly the reason that Dennis Priddle would not let Maggie Philbin drive the Fuel Streanliner in the Eigthies for Tomorrows World, because he said 'she couldn't handle it'.
My point in comparing the two is that, because there are cars involved the reporting is different.
If Irwin had been killed by a crocodile, not a stingray I don't think there would have been the same sanctimonious, 'Holier than thou', "What is the point of what he was doing" rubbish that was on the phone in show I was listening to this morning.

Not sure if it was BBC or ITV news but their "witness" said that he had watched the timed runs, left the track and then heard the car fire up again and do another run and then heard about the accident when someone told him about it later!!!

He was standing on the banking near the startline and 'saw somethig come off one of the cars about 100 yards past the finish line and go into the crowd...

The donations to the YAA have now reached the £30,000 mark.
People are donating from all around the world, not only in responce to the help they gave to Richard but to support a charity that provides a vital service. Its a shambles of UK government that all the UK air ambulances forces are funded from donations, same goes for the RNLI.

Best wishes to the Hamster, hope he recovers soon. Slightly worrying that the Herpes and Syphillis Executive seem to have jumped on the incident with glee. What are they going to conclude? That driving a dragster breaches the Health and Safety at Work Act?
It'll be interesting to see how the beeb respond. A characteristically spineless response would be to cancel the show, but it attracts a lot of viewers and BBC managers are ratings junkies.
Or they could follow Transport 2000's suggestion of a programme about "sensible cars being driven sensibly". Well, that'll bring in the viewers!

Hammond had not lost his sense of humour and, according to The Sun, said to his other co-presenter James May, also visiting him in hospital: "Hello c**kface."

LONDON (Reuters) - The BBC is to indefinitely postpone the new series of Top Gear until presenter Richard Hammond has recovered from the brain injuries he suffered in a high-speed crash.
The next series had been due to begin on October 8.
"We would not think of finalising plans for the next series without discussing it with everyone involved," the BBC said in a statement. "When it is suitable, the team will do this and we will announce a new transmission date."
Hammond, 36, was moved from a high dependency ward to a side-room on a general ward at Leeds General Infirmary on Saturday.
"He is continuing to do well," a hospital spokesman told Reuters on Sunday.
Hammond was seriously injured on Wednesday when he crashed a jet-powered dragster as he accelerated towards 300 mph in a feature being filmed for the BBC show.
With the accident being jointly investigated by police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Top Gear Producer Andy Wilman threatened to quit if the BBC made any attempt to tone down the programme's emphasis on speed and extreme stunts.
"You either do the show you or you walk away," Wilman told The Observer newspaper on Sunday.
Hammond's co-host Jeremy Clarkson also rejected criticism of Top Gear's format.
"Next week I intend to be down on the track driving faster than ever," Clarkson told The Observer. "It's what we do."
Meanwhile Hammond well-wishers have donated over 134,000 pounds to a charity for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, which air-lifted the Top Gear presenter to hospital after Wednesday's crash.

They are holding a car boot sale at Elvington Airfield today. It's only bits and pieces but apparantly it's all top gear
