Love the cars, the good old days.
Can't help looking at the hoarding on the stand - The Speedbird logo and BOAC, was told what it stood for, but too rude to say here.
VC10 - what year was that?
-
12th April 1970.
Edit : September 1969, sorry. Saga moment.

I remember seeing those at Heathrow when I was young, accompanying my dad in his plane spotting days ::)

... and latterly, the RAF still use them as in-flight tankers

Termie,
Just found a few old trannies in the barn
Judging by the text, i thought that this was going to be one for the Gimp.
Nice picture though.
-
Sorry about the quality of the pic (it is nearly 40 years old! and taken on a Practikamat!) but here's a plane and the race.

My uncle was a flight engineer on VC10's for BOAC. He used to call them "The Queen of the Sky"
Chances are they knew each other, it wasn't a huge fleet!
-
The VC10's were built (in part by my Grandfather) at Weybridge (Brooklands), I can remeber my school shaking when they took off because it was a realtivly short runway and they really had to wellie it to take off. (Sorry Termi but the plane in the background of the last pic is a Jumbo 747 - still a great pic though)
-
That 747, must have been one of the first of BOAC fleet, becasue the 747 only got it air cert. in 69 (as I was told same year as Concorde)
So where was that airfield/track?
And as for VC10, when did they come out of service with BA?
BEA - stood for "Back Every Aftertoon" (as they flew to Europe)

Ohh... my dad was a Captain - 4 stripes!! We are practically related then JPC!

Thats a jumbo surely, not a VC10! - It is BOAC tho.
:D
Oops - should read thread before posting!!

And my Uncle flew them there VC10 tankers for years! :)
-
Small world! :)

-
It got a whole lot smaller once the VC10 and such like came into service
-
Wonderful pictures, I would guess they are not from the same race? the one with the 747 in the background and the 512 looks like the Brands, the plane must have been a dummy or a very big hoarding?
Not sure where the other comes from a.
-
My memory is as faded as the pics. I was of coure wrong about the first 2 (know nothing at all about hairy planes!), they were taken at Thruxton in 1969. Of course the one with the planes is the BOAC 1000, and that was April 1970. Doh. ::)
-
By coincidence there is a rather nice poster from the BOAC 1000 Brands Hatch in April 1970 on *bay finishing in around an hour!!! Bit out of my price range tho. ::)

How much do programmes go for? ;)

April 1972 £3.99
No bids on any of those yet tho! :P

That 747 in the back ground was the first BA (BOAC then) jumbo, as going to their history site
1971
On 14 April BOAC operated its first commercial Boeing 747 flight (G-AWNF, Heathrow-JFK).

What history a pic can tell.

Blimey, they only had 2 days to tow it back to LHR - obviously the M25 moved faster in those days.... !! :o
F
(P.S. I do of course realise that the M25 wasnt built then, I was just using it for comedy effect... before the anoraks attack!! ::) )
-
Being attacked by anoraks again Fran? You gotta stop this bad trippin' on acid!
-
I think that Jumbo Jet is a hoarding.
I was there, but I can't remeber exactly, but you'd never land a 747 at Brands

:o Blimey, my dad was also a Flight engineer with BOAC on VC10's, and my mum was a stewardess...I'll leave the rest to your imagination. He later went on to fly DC10's in the late 70s and 747s until he retired. I'd lay money on Your uncle & my dad knowing each other as you say, not many of them around. ;D

I'd say it's almost certain, as my uncle went over on to 747's after the VC10's retired!
