Unwrapped at last - the secret ACO photo of the circuit modifications.

The view from ground level

The car arrowed in the centre is my mates 1956 Hillman Minx that we went in that year ('65, '66 or '67).
Lynx's photo is even earlier though - I don't ever remember a bridge being there. It looks like that was before the old tunnel was built.
As you can see from both pics, the N23 used to be one of the main car parks

Where are all the tents, gazebo's pools etc, come to think of it where are the camp sites? :o
-
Thes pics are superb!!!!!!! Anybody got anymore similar ones. Does anybody know when the ferris wheel first became part of the event??
-
I guess in those days.....kitty litter had not been invented....and of course catch fencing was someting onlyused to keep sheep in the field!!!

A tent probably cost the equivalent of 2 or more months income in 1960!

Nd here is a further shot of the circuit taken in 1954. The first one was in 1950. Recognise where we are looking here?

I personally recon it is arnage with run to the porsche curves as they are now anyway in the bottom right.
-
I think Arnarge too - looking from the north
-
I'm with Rick - definitely.
-
looks like the run into Indianapolis to me with the white house in the corner, virage arnage campsite on the left-hand
-
I'm with Pam. It's Indianapolis. Arnage corner is just off the left-hand edge of the photo.

I think you are right! Right corner wrong way up!
-
Nah Rick, I liked your first effort...

The white house (by the opening "crash " scene in the SMQ film 1971 ) is further north near to Zone F on MB

Pam wins the prize of a drink from you all in a couple of weeks. That is Indianapolis with the old Arnage camping site on the left. Maybe I'll dig out some more and rest you!
-
if you notice i used white house and not Masion Blanche, as you go into the Indianapolis corner there is a white house/castle type structure on the right and that is what i was referring to.
anyway the White House you refer to has gone hasn't? it was part of the old road run up to the grandstands, the road flips in at the Porsche curves now.
what do i know, it's only a car race.
here's one i made earlier
-
The "castle like structure" you refer to Pam is the marshal's post there. Maison Blanche used to part of the old circuit before the Porsche Curves were introduced and as you rightly say was demolished for the improvements. Yippee, get my press passes today! Anyway, congratulations on winning and beating the Gods!

is that tough to do beating a load of school boyz with nothing better to do.

That's great. Google have up dated their photo since I last looked.
-
I see that UFO's still there on the Bugatti hairpin?
In fact, now I think about it, it's been a while since I've been up towards Tetre Rouge. We used to make a loop of it, walking up the outside of the circuit, through the fair to Tetre Rouge, then cross the track via the little underpass to the inside of the circuit and then walk back to the village keeping the track on our right. Calling in at the Railway Bar for a well earned snifter before eating our body weights in Grand Marnier Crepes. It doesn't look like that's possible now, or do they rig up some sort of pedestian route just for the race week? The new banking at TR looks like it's definitely worth a visit.

I would love to join in this thread but, other than those posted by SimonR and Pam, I can see NO pictures at all...
Other than being useless at driving computers, can anybody think of a reason why the pictures are not visible to me..? :'(

Great pic Indianapolis with Arnage on the left, no question. And I think you will find the 'old Arnage camping site' is still very much there

Probably your internet proxy preventing access to the photobucket site where the otehr images are hosted. I uploaded mine to the server as an attachement.
