Title: What is on your playlist?
Post by: Lord Steve on June 01, 2016, 09:14:57 pm
I'm in the process of putting the finishing touches to this year's Spotify playlist for the trip through France and will have to add some selections for my fellow travellers. Some early punk and Northern Soul for Pete and a bit of Yes, Be Bop Deluxe and ELP for Ade JW and for me plenty of Led Zeppelin interspersed with some Rammstein, Soundgarden, Blackberry Smoke and Audioslave with a side dish of Rage Against The Machine.
Havin' it large and noisy!

This has become an annual topic so what's everyone else disturbing the peace with?

On the grounds that I won't have time to listen to them before I leave, on the way down it's RLM's class reviews first.

When I've finished them and on the way back, The Doors, Libertines, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, Metallica, ZZ Top and for a little light relief best of Two-Tone, Amy W the BBC sessions and Mozart!

Perfect except for the omission of The Boyz. Can you run us off a cassette?

When travelling around parts of France and Benelux, there is always Classic 21 Radio.  Our favourite is Classic 21 80s, the weblink I use at home is:

http://www.rtbf.be/classic21/webradios or on an interweb radio.  The playlists can be repetitive after a while but it is good music to dip into.

Can usually can be found on FM between 87 and 90ish, (although occasionally up to 94 or 104 in some areas).  Doesn't reach Le Mans but covers Pas-de Calais and Spa.

My companion, Mr T (Fezboy) is a straight through classic rock boy.

My tastes are a bit more progressive, so Alex Clare, Crystal Castles (we almost fell out about that choice), The XX, Groove Armada, and Daft Punk.

I do like to some classical too.  My indomitable favorite is Mozart's Requiem Mass.

I can recommend the Late Night Tales album series, if you haven't come across it before - these collections of tracks selected by various "Modern Artistes".  Don't be put off as these folk have been influenced by the old masters and rare grooves, and there are some real pleasures.  There's a Late Night Tales web site, but there are a lot on the streaming services.

I do on occasion play the music so that the bass vibrates the rear view mirror so that I can't see very much.  But it's OK as I've dome a "yob test" and there is so much sound proofing in my old M5 that you can barely hear it outside the car.

Joe  Bonamassa. Robin Trower. Mark Knopfler and Bowie mainly. Floyd, Zep, and various Kate Bush/ Tori Amos chick style offerings for the rest.

Absolutely nothing wrong with Tori Amos, good choice!

If the ACO tuned into this thread then we might of got a decent band for one of the nights.

What....? Are you suggesting that there's anything wrong with the recent French bands?

OK, if you were the ACO entertainments officer what would be the ultimate band for the Saturday night concert?
Rules: (1) Bands have to be the original line up and therefore alive! (2) No disco!

Original line ups is a problem, would exclude Stones, AC/DC, Springteen, Sabbath, Floyd, Joy Division etc.
Might be able to russell up the original line up of Deep Purple, don't think any of them are dead yet, unless I missed an obituary.
Most of the bands I love only have 1 member left alive, if that.
Can you relax the rules a bit?

Just thought of one, Roxy Music, I think they are all alive and kicking, but they are only allowed to play songs from the first 3 albums.

Sorry Barry, rules are rules.
I wanted to keep out shadow bands like Fleetwood Mac. There was only ever one Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green.
I'm going to start with Budgie and/or Blackberry Smoke.

Agree about Peter Green.

Come up with three answers which fit the rules:

Them Crooked Vultures
Arctic Monkeys
The Strypes

I would go to the stage rather than watch the race for any of them.

Barry, I'm prepared to relax the rules for Iggy Pop with Josh Homme.

I think I can go above and beyond, how about three that are both alive and French?

Air
Daft Punk
M83 (OK in the bottom of the barrel now)

Homme played in Iggy's band at Later with Jools Holland a few weeks ago.  Think they recorded Iggy's latest album (which is great btw) together with a new band (few guys from QOTSA, Iggy and Arctic Monkeys ... not sure about the last one though)
Hope they'll play together at Werchter in a few weeks.

Listen to Snapshot by The Strypes, released about 3 years ago, kicking rhythm n blues and then look up how old the band were when it was released.
There's hope for the youngsters!
