Title: Get ready to be shafted!
Post by: Barry on October 12, 2023, 03:48:37 pm
Just seen the prices for 2024.
Ouch, some big price rises there. Week ticket Ä115 if you are not a member and the good grandstands are an eye watering Ä175, as in the past no discount for ACO membership, that's up about 75% I think. Not looking forward to seeing the price of camping!

I was thinking about trying a grandstand for the first time ever for my 40th but think I might leave that one we will see at camping costs.

24% increase in GE week ticket prices if you are not an ACO member!
And of course ACO members are now limited to 2 tickets at the members price, only 4 in total, the extra 2 can be student, PMR or full price, not 6 discounted like they used to be able to get.

They will be crying into their wine if everyone says 'f*ck that'
The ACO needs to remember the 80's, few entries, few spectators compared to now.

I'm getting more and more tempted by the idea of a nice drive around Northern France with the luxury of hotel or B&Bs and restaurants, then perhaps a day ticket to watch some racing at the circuit (or just watch the beginning and end of the race sat in a nice bar somewhere).

New limits on number of tickets you can buy.
N.B. Camping tickets.

It also looks as though the free grandstand seats (other than T17/T18) for those without GS tickets are a thing of the past now....

Will this apply to test day?

Won't the stands be a bit empty, or will they sell day tickets, and can you go to other stands?

There is no mention of access on Test Day whereas full week GS ticket holders specifically have access on the 9th June.    I see also that if you have a full week entry ticket but no GS ticket, there is a strange reference to 'Authorised access only from 12 to 14 June' mentioned re grandstands.  What that is supposed to mean, I have no idea.

Ok, letís get some perspective on this.
Yes the prices have gone up, and yes being an ACO member is not as beneficial as it once was.
Clearly a shed load of money was spent on last yearís Centenary event, a lot of it on very visible and clearly long term improvements to the infrastructure of the place and other facilities, especially the members areas, they have to recoup this somehow.
By way of comparison, Silverstone F1 tickets for 2024 are £329 for 3 day GE, minimum of £489 for 3 day GE pus grandstand, and camping is £129 per person plus £50 supplement for your vehicle, for just 6 hours of track action.
Even at the new inflated prices there are few better value top class motor racing events in the world, and letís be honest, how many of you are really going to spite yourself by not going?

Totally agree, however let us who have supported LM over the last 20 years, which to be honest, except for the occasional year, have been a bit lean in terms of entertainment in the top class vent our spleen. Thank God for the other classes which have provided the entertainment.

Sillystone is the world's greatest motorsport rip off IMHO, they could charge double what they do and the F1 lemmings would still pay to go. If they could charge you for the air to breath whilst you were on site they would.

Sports car racing went through a very lean period in the 80's, if it was not for the hard core fans it is possible that even LM would not have survived. Everytime the ACO has had affiliations with the FIA there have been issues.

On a personal note, most of the viewing areas for disabled people are in the grandstands, which have been increased in price by 75%. Access for all is the ACO's mantra, perhaps not.

Correct.  You can't actually get in the building housing T17 and T18 unless you're a member.  But the actual specific seats don't apply until Saturday/Sunday.  It's always amusing to see ticket holders coming in during practice demanding to sit in 'their' seats.  The temptation to say 'Not until Saturday mon ami' is very strong....  ;)

By the way, there's an interesting little snippet in the ACO material that we have so far - 'Reinforced access checks for an improved spectator experience'.   In T17 where I sit, the start (and finish) of the race has often been marred by interlopers being let in to stand along the front and stand or even sit in the stairwells.  In 2022 having a seat in the front row it was so bad it ruined the start of the race for us.  This year they were unceremoniously booted out before the start, which was very pleasing to see.  I assume the ACO are going to get tougher on people trying to get into the stands who have no ticket.

Not so sure that is true for next year, ambiguous wording by the ACO.
The wording on the ACO site on a week GE reference grandstands is 'Authorised access only from 12 to 14 June'

It was great fun this year watching the stewards throwing out groups who had got 8 people in on 2 tickets in T17!

I wonder with Increased numbers of manufacturers where additional hospitality will go. I'm sure we will be disappointed by the decision.

Having thrown everyone out of the centre of the circuit, there'll still be plenty of space.  The major risk is with car parks and camping which was affected considerably last year.

I'm sure most of you won't rue it but this year they have removed my magic ticket which gave the opportunity to buy 5 camping tickets before it was open even to ACO members.

I never did know what qualified me for it, as many were going for many years longer than I did, but even after I stopped going I continued the membership so that others could benefit from the tickets - avid race fans ( and socialisers) from this forum. Most sadly, I think some of them are having second thoughts about next year. I feel there's a few familiar faces you may not see next year as a result.

Whatever, it seems the loyal fans are being somewhat shafted. IMO this has been the pattern over the past few years (I'd say since the demise of Maison Blanche).

I've been an "at home" spectator for a few years now and you get to see and learn much more about the racing on the telly. It's the social side I miss but I have some fantastic memories of it all which I'll never lose.

Bearing in mind the pressure for tickets for this year's race and the likely pressure again for next year's, the removal of 'magic' or 'privileged' ticketing comes as no great surprise.  I have two very old French friends (ACO members) who were automatically asked if they wanted the same tickets each year.  That now is gone.  I've been an ACO member for26 years and have never been afforded such a privilege.  Such is life....

I get this feeling to. Having gone for so many years and living local its more than a race for me but if I hadn't paid for Club Voyage membership I would really be thinking about skipping next years race. I have said and think I will only go every other year moving on as it looks like I will be going alone anyway.

Sad to see Le Mans 'diehards' turning away... especially after such a sensational event and race this year.  For me, the desire to be there is even greater than before.  Accepting the fact that I don't camp, which makes life far easier ticketing-wise, I had few ticket problems last year even managing to pick up a couple of tickets on the excellent resale site.  I agree that loyal fans were shafted last year with the closure of long-standing camping and parking areas but the lure of the 24 Hours remains as great for me as it has even done.

Totally agree, but I am torn between attending in person or watching it online. 10 days to decide.
If I was fitter I would say sod it and go to Sebring next year, however that's a bit beyond me at the moment.
The elephant in the room, especially for larger groups, is the lack of information on camping. Especially as it looks like last year, that the camping tickets will go on sale after GA and grandstands.
On the ACO website it says that reception area tickets will be limited to 3 per applicant. I believe camping comes under reception areas, if that is the case it will force even relatively small groups into the clutches of the agencies, who of course will mark up the increased price of tickets. If a grandstand and GA ticket is Ä285 for ACO members direct, how much from an agency?

Having supported the race for over twenty years I am beginning to feel unwanted and unappreciated by the ACO.
So sad.

Sadly, its the way of the world.  I gave up with the Grand Prix, because the best places had gone to hospitality, so you didn't get to see much and it was expensive. It was far better on the television - you saw all the good bits, with replays!

Le Mans seems to be going the same way, and I now watch much of it on the TV, as I did at home during covid.  OK I'm getting old, but even our younger generation watch it on their phones, if they can get some bandwidth, and then want to cast it to my TV!

I find club level motorsport more interesting - you can take a good look at the cars, and talk to the drivers etc.  One of the old gits has resorted to the Sotheby's London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.  Oh dear, looks like hospitality could be ruining that too

Title: Re: Get ready to be shafted!

Barry has put it well.

"If I was fitter" - none of us are getting younger and the more obstacles that are put in our way can only deter...

"The elephant in the room, especially for larger groups, is the lack of information on camping." Exactly, there are many large groups, from here at least, who might think twice if they cannot camp together - maybe not even on the same campsite, and harder to ensure you are on the same site as other groups you associate with.

"Having supported the race for over twenty years I am beginning to feel unwanted and unappreciated by the ACO." - this.

There are other factors at play but these stand out.

I don't think there is any doubt that Le Mans is changing and the major effect is upon those who camp.  There were huge changes last year which impacted a lot of those people and I think the large number of spectators who choose to camp were significantly 'disrespected' (for want of several better words) by the ACO.  As we know, when changes are made, they're often not for the better and moreover they tend to stick.  This year was worse because the ACO made zero effort to communicate the changes in advance and then made matters even worse by splitting the ticket sales.  I don't expect any of the 'lost' camping (or parking) areas to be reinstated for next year's race.  It's strange in a way in that the ACO clearly see benefits in making their event more 'green', so want less people travelling in cars but then disadvantage those who camp, most of whom probably don't move their cars much (if at all) during the week.  I'm not getting any younger either, I'll be 67 by the time of next year's race but as I've already said, camping isn't for me and I've found other ways of doing Le Mans over the years that suit me far better. There is certainly a need for more planning and I think that many who didn't enjoy last year's event probably suffered as a result of not planning as well as they could have done.  But overall, I can't disagree that the ACO are now much less interested in facilitating the group approach and are focused more and more on the corporate side of things.

Whilst I have to agree that the ACO do seem to be over inflating the price of tickets.  The lean years for them with no Spectators in 2020 and limited numbers in 2021 and no doubt the over spend on the Centenary Race they are no doubt attempting to re-coup the losses.

This year I spoke to a number of "New" groups who where really enjoying things on there first visit.  So even if the die hards stop going they will be replaced by a new generation of Fans.

Having only missed 2 races in the last 45 years I too am wondering if it's time to call it a day.  Prehaps the only thing stopping me giving up is the chance of some close racing with the Hypercars.

Does anyone understand the logic of this?

Is it just to devalue ACO membership?

Prehaps the only thing stopping me giving up is the chance of some close racing with the Hypercars.

With all the difficulties with tickets and the price, if it was still an Audi or Toyota procession I wouldn't think twice about not going, however good the other classes of racing were.

There is also the other issue for next year which may have encouraged the ACO to wack up the prices and think they can get away with it.
In one word: Rossi.

I think it's just to discourage large groups of the great unwashed from going.
Got to make room for the beautiful people who couldn't give a f*ck about sportscar racing.
They've got F1itus.
3 seems very old number though, even for the ACO, why not 4?
Which would be far more sensible.

I just looked it up: This year the ACO price for the Houx campsite was 125,- Ä, now they are asking 175,- Ä for next year, a 40% increase! This can't be justified with inflation only. Looks like the subject of this thread is spot on!

Sadly I cant remember what other years are to compare for camping I just pay it  :-\

As an example, Epinettes was (Member price/Public price):  Ä90/Ä105 in 2021, Ä92/Ä107 in 2022, I have no price for this year as we were bumped to BSJ and they are now Ä147 /Ä175 for 2024, I'd say that's a pretty meteoric rise for no added value whatsoever.

Have you also noted Werner that they are now advertising Houx as WITHOUT electricity, if that is actually the case and not a typo, that's a whole lot less for a whole bunch more .....

Anyone know where Prairie and Cormier will be located?

Probably somewhere near Ecommoy.

They're all being advertised as without electricity though possibly because they'd have to provide proper supplies otherwise and no longer turn a blind eye to the Christmas trees of sockets and extensions that grow and grow during the week

I'm sort of working on the basis that compared to the British F1 GP weekend it remains good value. And if I keep saying that to myself...... but I do look on it that as a week in France with mates and an iconic motor race thrown in it can't be beaten. So I'll still be going while I can

I emailed them this not that it will make a blind bit of difference but hey I feel better for it 😊

Can the aco explain/justify the 40% increase in camping passes for epinettes this year's lm24 ?

As an aco member for 13 years and race attendee for 20+ years this is the most blatant explotation of your fan base I have ever experienced. Let alone the crazy price increase last year around the race for merchandise/food and drink.

It appears the aco only wants corporate fans from now on.

Let's be honest, it's what the ACO are banking upon - unsustainable rises (percentage-wise) supported by a do-or-die loyal fan base. The majority of us are moaning and feel exploited, myself included, but the majority of us will still ultimately pay up and go, again, myself included.

Itís almost as if they are deliberately pricing people out of Epinettes and Houx.  The only real difference appears to be the screen and food stall/ bar - maybe they didnít make the income expected.

Had a pleasant spot in Epinettes this year, however will look at Houx Annex or Beausejour for next year.  Houx Annexe just looks a bit open to me.

We've been on Epinettes since it opened as refugees from Maison Blanche and loved it - a little less rowdy as we have all got that bit older but were bumped to BSJ for '23 as we just couldn't get tickets for Epi. With th eprice increase we're now off there for good and it's back to BSJ for us again now. Yes, BSJ is not the pick of the bunch, but when we're buying 10ish pitches the price difference now cover all the catering for the week.

Aco's reply
Category 1 Areas are very popular and benefit from more qualitative services than lower category Areas. We remain at your disposal for any further information

As per previous posts
I know we can all decide not to go but that doesn't mean we have to be happy with being shafted (I'm quite suprised the French with their usual attitude to unwanted changes are happy with it either.) and a general reduction in all benefits of aco membership ticket prices etc.

We got our GE's and camping tix (we just went straight for BSJ as we knew the system would f**k us if we tried anything else) - but it was an utter faff coordinating the purchase between four people across three countries due to the stupid limits the ACO have put on ticket numbers now !!

Odd, got my camping & GA, went back to look at something else, got timed out but it left me in the sales section, didn't throw me out.

And yes, I did cave in and decide to go. But I came up with a cunning plan which meant that I didn't need a Tribune ticket to cover my mobility issues or be on one of the expensive campsites!

That was seriously nerve-wracking.  Managed to snag 4 full week entry and T17 tickets, parking and a camping spot for my pal out at Mulsanne (he was happy with that).  Still shaking.  Last year I was all sorted by 9.20 am but it took me nearly an hour this year using two accounts on separate browsers!  Thankfully I didn't get chucked out other than very early in the waiting process at about 8.40.  Any members who have not got in and made purchases by now are likely to be disappointed, I fear....

I must of been lucky - although as members of my group had not replied to my email my requirements were limited!

Got 2 tickets in Parnorma and 1 camping pitch on Houx Annexe - never camped there before but wasnít prepared to pay twice as much for Epinettes.  Hadnít realised there was a lake next to it, so might be a bit close to that!

Next trick is to sort out ferries. Now do I allow for stirring in the campsite not being allowed out, or will it be 2 hours this year or no hours! 😂

Yes, the smaller Hippodrome pitches have a separate parking area away from the pitch - as I recall.

A bit of a bun fight, as it was this year.
Got my 3 PC's logged in to each of our 3 ACO accounts (I didn't check whether it was pre-requisite to be logged in in order to make your order?), waited from 9am to 9.35am  in the queue.

Managed to get 4 x MEMBERS PRICES (GE and GS) on each card - YES - 4!
12 x Barnato T14, but not all in the same place (6 together and another 6 a few rows away in groups of 2 within shouting distance)
6 x BSJ Camping.

Checked it all out no problems.

Tried that. Nice Lady at the ACO has sorted us out with a temp membership number that has worked. Sadly the Epinettes in my basket have long gone so we now have a double pitch in Prairie to luxuriate upon. As long as we are there... we have bicycles to get around on

Just logged on to the ACO website out of interest, all camping and grandstands sold out, a few day parking tickets for just Wednesday and Thursday left, so effectively just GA tickets left. Ticket agencies are warning even those registered with them that they have reduced allocations so won't be able to meet demand already evrn for those registered with them. Hope that any of us who didn't get what they needed in last week's release got something today.

Unallocated, that's strange.  I know I've sat in that stand with a cover.....

Mystery solved.  There are two Chapelle grandstands.  The existing one (T03) and the new temporary uncovered stand Chapelle 3Bis......

That makes more sense then! Thanks Ayse.

When I get back on, will check the tickets on my account.

Seems that Chapelle is less expensive than CAT2 tickets as well (maybe because it is unallocated!?)

Ä149 ACO Member week ticket and Chapelle
Ä131 Student weekend ticket and Chapelle

Hi guys,
for me itís the first time that Iím going to visit the 24h LeMans. I become a member of the ACO and bought two tickets for 180 euros per ticket. But on my ticket is displayed ďT03 Bis - ChapelleĒ. Iím really disappointed of the sales system.
Anyone else got the same problem? I wrote them a mail and Iím looking forward for their answer. I will reportÖ

When did you become a member?  Most members bought their tickets last week.  If you've only just joined, the only grandstand left today was Chapelle which the ACO added, intended mainly for non-members.

Yesterday I booked the tickets. The ACO told me that the were facing technical issues and give me the 62 euros back which I payed to much. So I got the right tickets but they charged the price for Cat.2.

We get our tickets through Just tickets. We have our tickets but they are having to move others from Terte Rouge (our campsite) due to a far smaller allocation this year.

The agents allocations have been changed yet again, god alone knows why.  So the agents have the problem of telling some customers the bad news.

I get the feeling that (for this and other reasons) the French are starting to hate foreigners.  I look forward to Frexit

From the levels of angst I've seen on the likes of Facebook, there is plenty of animosity from the French towards the ACO and their ticketing processes right now.....  I don't think it's confined at all to foreigners.  In fact, most of the annoyance seems to have been caused by the apparent huge increase in membership, with members 'creaming off' every decent ticket....  I must admit it has surprised me - after last year's ticketing for this years race - that so many people have been so completely unprepared for what has happened, ticketing-wise.  It's a concern though.  It once was the case that if you wanted to be safe and secure your tickets, you paid the premium and went to a good agency, now it seems that the agencies are struggling to get enough tickets to meet even their existing customers - so why is this happening?

That's why we use Just Tickets. You pay a bit more but get the tickets. They pay a fee to be ticket agents and still get shafted by the ACO.

And that fee is at least Ä15k (maybe more for the bigger agencies) - that's a lot to make back from a markup on ticket prices and enforced GE purchase all the time you are fielding the complaints (that should be directed at the ACO) from people who don't stand a chance of getting what they wanted/previously enjoyed.

To the other point on people's angst over members creaming off the best tickets - it's not a closed club, anyone can join and whilst I dislike the way the tickets have been sold/allocated in the past few years (and the big percentage price hikes), people complaining that they didn't get the chance to purchase because they were not members seems somewhat bizarre to me as the opportunity is open to all.

What does seem unfair to me, and was highlighted by a friend, is that the member allocation does not reward loyalty where people who joined the day before the tickets went on sale have been allowed the same access as those that have been members for 20+ years, supporting the club through the good and the lean times. One would have thought that some form of reward for loyalty could have been implemented (perhaps allowing 'seasoned' members the option to purchase a few more tickets, or opening the sale a day earlier as a recognition of loyalty?)

I very much agree.  In fact, long standing members lost out as their 'standing orders' were not honoured this time, they were put back in the pot with all the other members.  As you say, I've been a member for 27 years and get nothing more than someone who joined on 6th November....

I think after last years attendance and the increase in manufacturers etc the ACO has thought why give some of the pie to the agencies. Let's keep it all for ourselves.

I never realised the agencies paid a premium. I thought in the lean years they would have been given a discount for taking a block of tickets the ACO would have struggled to sell themselves.

Resale site is working, just got a full week GA.
There were 4, but were sold very quickly.

Yep.  Today has seen weekend entry, full week entry and full week/Chapelle GS.  Yesterday there was Prairie camping and Panorama and Expo parking, amongst others.  I'm assuming now that many will have heard from their agencies about what they have for them, which should trigger some more 'bought just in case' resales.

Got to say that booking ABBA Voyage was a doddle compared to the ACO [it's also a fantastic show!].
