Title: Speeding Alert
Post by: Abs on April 16, 2004, 03:47:54 pm
Just picked this up off the pistonheads forum, thought it would be of interest with PQ comng up.Just read in the Daily Mail this morning about Calais police snared more then 100 speeding UK motorists over the bank holiday weekend.

They targeted the A26 south of Calais...don't know if this is one of the routes used for Le Man (as this year will be my first trip!).

7 people who were 45mph over the 81mph limit were arrested and had there licences and cars confiscated. There are going to continue targeting this route...basically 9/10 people stopped were from the UK...whether they were deliberately targeting UK cars (which is why this stat is so high) is another question and don't want to accuse our neighbours of unfair harassment

Good luck

They had a similar blitz on the A16 Calais to Boulogne at this time last year.
I am out there on Monday so I'll keep my eyes open for activity.
Thanks for the warning Abs.

Next weekend is an holiday weekend in France.

They would like to trap people coming too fast from Normandy which is not only a crossing-country but also a touristic region on its own  ;)

That reminds me of the time when driving to Le Mans and asking my brother if there was traffic coming the other way. After several successful overtakings I pulled out after my brothers yes only to be confrunted with a 48 tonner! Swore my head off only to find he had been asleep all the time and was mearly grunting in his sleep.

Mark I have SatNAV in the car so that will A) Tell us where to go and B) will piss all of us off by going LEFT IN 100 YARDS when we know where we are going.

I just followed my nose to the cold Leffe beer in Le Mans centre.

..... (or followed the 'deviation' signs  ;D)

Ah yes the 'deviatons'.  Remind me again, which particular ones were you into last year.   ;)

And did anyone else get caught in the rolling roadblock last year just south of Calais?  It must be said that the French police that are so keen to catch the British speeding were as much use as chocolate fireguards on that day.

Followed the bl@@d!! sat nav last year trying to get around the diversions and it took us into the centre of Rouen. Traffic was mad!!!!!!

Too clever for its own good.

No speed traps in evidence on Monday 19th A16,
however heavy security at Calais. All passports being checked carefully and heavily loaded cars and vans being searched.
Would suggest if you like cutting it fine on check in you allow an extra 15 minutes to get through checks.

Sometimes the old methods are better.  I rely on my personal, well trained navigator.  He might be a scouser, but he can read a map.  ;D
