Title: What's the Greatest Car Chase in a Movie? (so far)
Post by: nopanic - neil on May 09, 2007, 10:26:15 pm
OK Simple question,

What's the Greatest Car Chase in a Movie? (so far)

Now to compete it must not be CGI (no Matrix), models or any other means.

Only genuine real car chase.

My first offer is

Blues Brothers
(http://img.youtube.com/vi/etMjjdxDyAw/2.jpg)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etMjjdxDyAw

If there is a large choice we could sort out a vote

OK - for the vote (not in order) Once these have completed - we'll do a vote
1. Blues Brothers - the whole film!
2. Bullit
3. Gone in 60 Seconds
4. Ronin
5. The French Connection
6. The Italian Job
7. Vanishing point
8. Smokey and the Bandit?
9. Brum -
10.

The final chase in the '70's (and original) edition of Gone in 60 seconds wasn't bad either...

Or car v train in "The French Connection"? That has to be a classic, too.

I think on this one there was no car, even thou it was great, - so no - unless everyone says it should be

The French connection -  Yes, - well I think so, unless u lot say no.

Note- Changed the title, as I have been told there are some good movies due out, which will have good car chase's in them. - So added "So far" as things change.

Bullitt huh? Now why did the car he was chasing lose SIX hubcaps? My favourite, although not actually a chase, is the 10 minute film "The Rendezvous" filmed early one Sunday morning with reputedly Jackie Ickx at the wheel of a Ferrari.

Hmm, Rendezvous....
A great film and soundtrack, but an optical illusion nonetheless (then again, which films aren't?). I think someone worked out the average speed at about 40mph or maybe even less, and when it sounds like he's maxing it in 4th gear (which should be well over the ton) he's actually doing about 60. I think it was Spirit Level Films that did a great re-mastering job a couple of years ago.
I think it's got to be Bullitt, but there's a good choice out there. Both the Bourne films had a great chase, a mini in the first, and I forget what in the second. I forget so much...

OK - Not sure if it can go in, was it a chase, or just fast driving in Paris.

Even more was it a V12  Ferrari 275 GTB, reading on the web and looking at this clip it was not.

in fact it was a big Mercedes sedan with a bumper mounted camera, look at this and tell me if it should go in.

Found on the web.
Quote
The Making of Rendezvous
After searching around on YouTube I found a film on the making of Rendezvous with Claude Lelouch, the mastermind behind the short film. In it, he shows the original car he used to film it; a big Mercedes sedan with a bumper mounted camera. He also retraces the original route he drove in the film. Apparently Lelouch dubbed the sound of a Ferrari 275 GTB over his footage and the results make for an impressive film. Because the dialogue in the “making of” film is entirely in French I couldn’t decipher any details about how he got away with driving so quickly through Paris in his Mercedes.

This film is a must see for any car lover.

or just fast driving in Paris.

Watch it with no sound, and you'll be surprised at how pedestrian it is, the roadside detail fairly crawls past at the edge of the frame. -I doubt he broke any speed limits.
Which I suppose, goes to show how good a film it is, it convinced an awful lot of people, in particular that f*ckwit Clarkson.

Sadly, the JCB won out in the end. A great film nevertheless. I'm wracking my brains to find the name of a film with a BMW 507 in though. He ends up dying on the beach at the end. Hmm - does Le Mans count? After all, they are each chasing each other........ ::)

Remember 'Driver' with Ryan O'Neal?
The scene in the car park where he destroys the car (Merc?) is a corker.
I'm also fond of the chase scene in Get Carter where the villains are running around the Newcastle cobbles in a red Mark 2 with no passenger door. Although disconcertingly, the door seemed to come off a bit easily for my liking.

Driver - Great shot of the Merc being destroyed -

Looked at Youtube - comes under Job interview! - I'm sure Ive been in taxis where the driver thought he was doing Ryan O'Neals part.

For those who have not seen it, look at this clip. But you do need to see it on the big screen

One of the finest scenes was on CEEBies the other bank holiday monday morning. It featured Brum the toy car and all these policemen and baddies were chasing him around Birmingham city centre waving their arms about. He shot down the steps by the Science Museum, it was unbelievable. Quite how he he missed the Mayor's fat wife coming out of the Town Hall I will never know! I was gripped by the whole episode.

Clever (ish) bit of editing at the end as well, if you watch the crash closely he approaches in a Cuda, but it's a white Camaro that actually hits the JCB...

I believe the film was 'The Beach', the drive was Fred Astaire. This is an old B&W 50/60's armagedon type movie.

It was a BMW 503, the film was 'The Last Run'.

3. Gone in 60 Seconds

Which version of 'Gone in 60 Seconds'?  If you haven't seen the original, how can you tell.

How about adding to the list 'The Great Race' (Tony Curtis/Jack Lemon/Eric Sykes etc), lovely old looking cars and the best custard pie fight I've ever seen.

C'etait un rendezvous - 1976

Appeared on Fifth Gear tonight, you only saw about a minute of the driving.  And yes it was a lumbering Merc with a front mounted camera.

However NBH tried to do a remake.

According to the film database - IMDB, it was the biggest pie fight in film history.

It had one of the best quotes " Throw more Brandy"

OK Another film for consideration - Monte Carlo or Bust (1969),
liked the bit where Tony Curtis jumps the dock to land on the cross channel ferry, to make sure he does not miss his crossing.
wonder if some of the CA people are like this on there way down to Le mans

Outstanding list - 1086 films with car chases!  And a car marque breakdown too.

Comedy value has to include James Bond (aka Roger Moore) in the 2CV with bullet holes.  Better still was the Citroen marketing genius in producing a special edition, complete with stick on "bullet holes", after the car had proved so popular in the film.  The translation of the marketing blurb from "full of bullet holes" turned into "full of are*eholes".

Lying in bed, unable to breath, and clearly dying of a terrible viral infection which the specialists have wrongly diagnosed as a common cold, I saw the weird film Pschyomania on sunday night. Here's what Film Database has to say-

This film is hindered by a weak script and quite apathetic acting, but somehow it's ridiculousness makes the film work. Unintentionally Psychomania is an amusing farce, the story of a group of bikers who discover the secret of eternal life, and intend to use this gift for nefarious purposes. The gang themselves are meant to be hardened troublemakers, but the scene where they descend on a town to cause mayhem, is hilarious. I would have thought the Girl Guides could cause more trouble. Saying that, the film has some wonderful one liners, and there is fun to be had in watching this oddball of a movie. Best of all is the sequence where the bikers all commit suicide in order to return as invincible, not for them a simple death the varied ways are way overelaborate and funny. Biker Horror is an odd genre, but the film is great fun and worth a look. Finally, the film does has a cracking soundtrack, a strange blend of gothic high pitched keyboards and hip wah wah guitar, that is always lurking and ably partnering the high jinks on the screen.

And yet I found it strangely enjoyable, particularly the elent car/bike action. The Police, in the guise of a young Seigfreid Farnon, had an S Type Jag and I'm pleased to say that the rear door flew open when it went round a corner sideways. One wonders how manytimes it's possible to roll a Thames Trader? Classic early seventies stuff, including one of the living-dead zombie bikers ending up under the wheels of a Commer van. It just can't be beaten.

Ok, has anyone seen 'The Fastest Indian'? sh*t, was that Tonto? staring Hopkins.

About the land speed record at Salt Lake, in the film there was a beach race which showed how clever the editors were.

I particularly liked the way he 'mowed' his lawn though

Great film.

I once saw a wierd Ausi film ( i was half cut at the time- so have no idea of its name) from what  i could make out, it was set in some backwater town where alien zombie types had taken hold. The hero tore about in a mad Bedford HA popemobile cum ice cream van with lifesize cut outs of the Beatles in the window above him. It was very low budget and very silly- at one point our hero scoops his own brain back in after falling off a cliff. Ace!
Does anyone know what its called? Or was it just a Strange dream?

Bad Taste. Peter Jackson's first film shot for 25000 dollars over three years with his chums. Won a major prize and the rest is history. Followed by Braindead which is even gorier! Lawnmowers rule!

Both excellent and highly recommended.

I suspect that the Nick Cave film is probably Ghosts... of the Civil Dead. Circa 1988.

That is probably because I gave up television three years ago. Bad Taste really is superb. Watch out for the green vomit! Ditto Braindead. Both dvds are really cheap. Why not order both, invite a few friends, invite their girlfriends and then open a book on who will throw up first?

Steve McQueen on the bike in The Great Escape.

However changing the subject a little bit to chasing the World Land Speed record.

Have a look at 'The Fastest Indian' with Anthony Hopkins. True story and a good film to watch.

The soundtrack is almost certainly dubbed over the top, and you get an unrealistic impression of speed from the low mounted camera.

As for Bullitt, the soundtrack's a GT40, not the 'stang, and IIRC the car manages 13 simultaneous upshifts in a row - that's some gearbox  ;D

Both still good tho'

Kev

There was a long discussion 2-3 years ago about this on the forum - tried to find it but havn't got the time now.

Lot's of pointers in the film itself (virtually empty streets, dubbed soundtrack, etc) and it was concluded that it was a set-up.

Because the man who made it says so. See this: http://www.axe-net.be/rdv/presentation.php (http://www.axe-net.be/rdv/presentation.php) (translate using google or similar).

The car was a Mercedes 450SEL 6.9 with a front mounted gyro stabilized camera. The soundtrack (Ferrari 275 GTB) was added later.

Here's a link with Claude Lelouch explaining (in French) how the film ("C'était un Rendez-Vous") was made: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHn5Q15kaIA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHn5Q15kaIA)

As nickliv says it's still a great film.

I made the mistake of watching Bullitt the other day......what a load of crap. Anyone else spot how many times he overtakes the Beetle?

The only thing that made it worthwhile was the heavy in the back of the other car winding down the window before shooting  ;D

i was crushed when i saw that expose about how it was 'really' made. rendez vous is such an awesome piece of filmmaking and damn exhilarating. i showed it to my friends who couldn't care less about cars and they were very impressed. part of me still believes that it was real and the lelouche wont admit it because he doesnt want to get in trouble/ be seen as reckless. some of the parts where he is accelerating or passing other cars look too fast to be done with the merc even if the film was sped up. i prefer being in denial.

here are some ronin clips with the S8.

makes me want an s8

Take a long look at this web site.  http://www.rjsmith.com/bullitt-locations.html (http://www.rjsmith.com/bullitt-locations.html)

Click the picture links for comparisons of then / now locations in the movies and a shot by shot description of the car chase scenes, and how the clips are repeated from different camera angles.

good web page, do you know if there is a similar treatment for the film Genevieve

No, but here's one for "Monte Carlo or Bust" Monte Carlo or Bust (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back_projection)

Is Rendezvous really a fake :(

Surely a 6.9 merc of that era wouldnt go round corners like that... My Dad had one for a weekend just before I arrived  in '72 and said it was like driving an oil tanker that would spin the wheels rather than accelerate  ;D

Gutted.... I thought it was real :(

I saw Vantage Point this weekend at the local multiplex...

Not a bad chase in that film complete with obligatory scattered of tables / chairs / pedestrians as the chase car drives through the pavement cafe arches, and lots of squeeling handbrake turns before the monumental pile up at the end.

The Duel.

Thanks Nick for backing me on this.

The bit I like was at the service station with the snakes.

I bet the truck didn't 50,000 gallons onboard. But it was erie and a good film

Has anyone considered Quentin Tarantino's latest fun piece....Death Proof???
The chases have a very 70's feel, and the cars are great

What about "Two Lane Blacktop"?
Nice 55 Chev Gasser and a new (at the time) Pontiac GTO. Overall, the movie stank, but the racing sequences were good.

How about Vanishing point?

Whatever the reality, Rendezvous is one of the finest examples of cinema verity you will ever see.

Not sure it quite counts as a chase - but I love the opening sequence in Drive.

I love Rendezvous but it isn't strictly speaking a 'chase'.

Vanishing point is iconic and is basically 'all chase'.

The Bullitt chase is a classic moment in movie history.

The chases in Ronin have a combination of extreme chase and drama.

I can't decide.

If any, they've probably been CGI with no real driving skill or entertainment.
