Title: Snow!!!!
Post by: wishy on February 02, 2009, 08:36:03 am
I don't think I will be working today!!!!!!

Down in the south here we have had about 8" of snow so far and it's still chucking it down.......hows everybody doing with the white stuff.

The dog thinks it's great fun ....running round the garden a 90mph ;D

Glad to hear the dog's enjoying it! Not much here in South Wales as I write this, just a light dusting. Forecast is for conditions to deteriorate significantly overnight so we'll see tomorrow. I can see the traffic jams already........

Glad to see you haven't gone metric Wishy ;D

Only light covering around Oxford area, hardly worth the effort to call it snow really, main roads are clear.

All the schools have been closed.

Well, I work in a school in South London, so I thought I would be clever. I got up at 5 AM and left just before 6 AM (I usually leave at 7 AM).

The pics below show the overnight snow on the car. I cleared it all off and was almost at the School when I got a call from the Head telling me they were going to close for the day because no one could get in  :o

Wimps I say, I would have made it, why couldn't they?

Just spent 1:30 driving for one side of Reading to the other and back normally only takes about 20 mins.

Mostly saw people being very cautious.    But plenty of idiots about.  Mostly Pedestrians crossing on a red man light.
But the best was the complete jerk that followed me down a hill about 2mm from my rear bumper.    He did back off once he saw me go sideways. :D

About 6" in my village - still made it to the tube station in Epping and then managed to get a whole 4 stops before they canceled the trains...

Had the time of my life doing handbrake turns in a very empty carpark and have now come home to try to do a bit of work.

Very funny watching people trying to drive in snow; living in Montreal for a bit and Sarajevo for a bit longer has meant that I am ok with it; in Essex even the 4x4's were getting stuck!

Just a light dusting in North Lincs but heading off to Queensferry tomorrow morning then meetings in Broxburn and Glasgow on Wednesday. Even if its a foot deep (304.8mm for you pedants) then I'm going. Not one to be beaten by a bit of white stuff.
Looking to book my flights today so I'll keep in touch.

Camden Town under 6-82. Quite funnyn watchin girl in a Merk SLK thingy trying to get up a 1/100 slope by flooring the throttle in first.
Someone kindly told her to put it in 2nd and try to go slowly.
Frightening that so many people in high powered cars have never driven in snow before.
I'm at work but may as well not be.

What Toby says about handbrake turns

I live in a cul-de-sac and normally have to three point turn to get out of it (Mrs parks away from the main road for whatever reasons seem to matter to her, bless her)

But joy oh joy nothing in the turn aroundy bit so I had great pleasure turning around by way of momentum and a delicate tad of handybrake

Sooper  >:D

and yes

I agree little things and little minds, but oh the freedom for a minute or so to just have bloody good fun...

only two or three inches yet, but things just have to get better, much more promised for later

(Yes again, the joy of retirement and no blooming work to go to)

I rang work at 7 and left amessage saying i was not going to Andover and would be in Rommsey after the rush hour twats had all crashed or got o work..
Got the call at 10 to say dont bother as both offices had been closed.
Spent the day touring the forest taking pics and had lunch in Lymington watching the fishing boats coming in.
Regarding idiots.... my got there are some total bell ends out there.
We were overtaken by a white van on a road that could only be driven if you knew where the tarmac was as it was all out of site under the snow and level with the forest either side.Moron. :(

Today was the first day that I had really used the Traction and ABS on the £400 Vecky V6. I can report that both work as they should and we had no incidents apart from a little torque steer drifting? trying to get up the hill from Pig Pen Towers.

Hope it freezes tonite as another day of pic taking in the forest will be fun ;D

Oh... and Lady PP was loving every minute of it as snow is not that common in Tasmania. Bless her.

Mine was written off today. Not for the reasons you might think.

Weeks ago I was taking stuff to the dump and spilt about half a jar of creosote in it. They are quoting £3800 to fix, which makes it a write off.

Probably a boring Mondeo for next car - 2.2 TDCI Titanium X if I can find one...

3 inches in Emsworth and 6 inches in Chertsey. (I was in Emsworth, the wife in Chertsey >:D).

Didn't touch the car as there are too many suicidal morons out there even though it's a 4x4.

No work so went for a walk and twisted my back! :-[

Had an email today offering me 50% of a Driving in Snow DVD with £3.50 postage total cost £11.50.
By the time it would have arrived, it would be summer.

Quite a few 4x4's in the hedges and ditches, all because the twats dont know how to drive them (V8LR's) and all on road tyres.

can't understand all the commotion; simple easy drive off the forest into Southampton for my PET/CT Scan today and an equally trouble free drive back, one abandoned car with a flat tyre.  That's the trouble with southerners, a few centimeters of snow and you'd think we had a visitation from god.  BTW the roads were snow free.
The roads from PP towers were like skating rink and private and un gritted, the hill to civilisation was compacted snow and ice. Bless the Veckys Traction control for the chattery uphill climb.

French roads 130mph, ... Smokie?

No I just cant believe it....

And Ice Racing sounds the business, especially if it means I get to share the tracks and trails with proper drivers instead of the average "Brit Moron" pillocks who have brain freeze at the sight of the lovely white stuff.

FWIW, during this cold snap, it said on the TV news this morning that it would be a good idea to check up on your neighbours to make sure they're alright.

My 87 year old neighbour hasn't been round to see me even once, and the selfish bone idle old witch hasn't even bothered to take in her milk for the last two weeks. Some people!  >:(

Another day off for me.... cant get out as the hill is impassable even to 4WD. Lucklily the Micra was abandoned at the other end and has proved to be a fine snow chariot.
Walking to the pub to drop off the keys was rather pleasant, as was coffee and brandy at 9.30 followed by bacon and egg rolls.
She has to be at work at 12 so it would be rude not to keep her company.
I see today becoming rather Guinessy ;D

Its Nearly all gone!
i was just reading this thread when Peter Ferrari Spider Catchpole called me with interesting news.
The sub division of our local Indian does Jhinga Chicken... mmm
Totally irrelavent to this thread but odd that he should call just as I was reading his post about my access to public roads being a porkie pie 8)
The man that keeps horses in our fields couldn't even get his 4wd Ford 8110 (?)tractor up the hill. It just sat spinning all 4 wheels and slowly going backwards, so getting the black slug out would have been impossible.
It is now rather moist outside and I think things will be back to normal in the morning.... unless it freezes again tonite.... which means we will be marooned in the wilds of Ossemsley for yet another day.
God bless the wood burner

Major roads in North Hampshire are "reasonable"! The slope in and out of my close an up into the corner where I live is now compacted snow that has sand and grit sprinkled on it but might just be passable if thinsg stay as they are. But the weather reports say it's going down to -6 tonight so we could just be skating on ice again tomorrow morning!

When I was a kid in God's Country, ie the valleys of South Wales = Trelwis. The schools never closed and that is with a over a foot of snow.

It was quicker to walk than pay threehalfpence fare which ment more on sweets

The Health and Safety brigade are ruining this country.

The school instructed us in building Igloes etc, that were still there in April - well the remains were.

No snow here (France, 17) at all, just sun & blue skies but have a week working at home 'cos my flight back to Gatwick on Monday was cancelled. Could have got in on Tues but weather for Thurs/Fri (more snow over London/SE) made it look like getting back here for the weekend would be a mission at best, so time to break out the VPN in anger (and spent yesterday afternoon trying to dig out a particular truculent tree-stump with little success).

Things have changed here now I'm sorry to say, just like the rest of the UK.

I work in the valleys and we were sent home from work at 11:00am yesterday morning because of the conditions at that time. I understand that some of my colleagues have to negotiate a few gradients here and there, but where's their sense of adventure and surely they are used to it? The driving conditions weren't that bad, even in a reasonably powerful car. 3 hours later it was gloriously sunny and picturesque with perfectly clear roads.

On the schools front I'm sure you are right regarding 'elf an safety'. I heard a discussion on the radio this morning and the reason being given for schools closing was that if the school was open and the child (or the child's parent) were injured in their attempt to get to the school then the school could be open to a lawsuit for compensation. What bo**ocks!

Where's the health and safety assessment for the poor unfortunate kids - 1 killed & 3 injured, whilst sledging on their enforced day off?

Rant mode off..........

Pleased to say the school that my daughters go to was open yesterday. They are 8 so go to junior but the secondary school, about 400 yard away was closed!

The headteacher made a point of calling all the teachers and was on site at 5am helping the caretaker clear snow etc. There are some good ones about!

However as the classes where only about half full, maybe it was a wasted effort?

On the work front of the 3 people that walk to work, only one made it, it was too slippery for the other 2. That shall be remembered!

Oh this is going to be fun,

have to drive from Chester to Rotherham this afternoon to do a job at a retail park tonight. Once thats finished then have to drive back tonight or early morning - rear wheel, 4 ton, fully loaded and top heavy cherry picker! (with no abs) - emmm looks like it could be fun?

Its been fun sliding around the local roads with it already.

Any office jobs going anywhere?  ;)

You can have my job if you like.  I got the office at 9 this morning only to find the building locked and the handful of staff that had made it in standing in the car park chatting.

Once someone with a key turned up a few of us spent the next hour shovelling snow so people have a fighting chance of getting their cars out when they go home in an hour.

Well, we got a decent dump this morning after 3 days of no snow.

The airport was shut for 4 hours, the sweepers just couldn't keep up at all.

And this afternoon we mostly went sledging. Piece of DPM / Visqueen outperformed the 'proper' sledge.

For tomorrow I may nail an old door,  and a pair of old skis together.......

My house is at the bottom of a steep lane with only 6 houses in it. We have woken up to deep snow three times this week and Mrs U has had to leave her Beemer at home, because it is useless if there is even a sniff of frost or snow. She has  traveled  into work with me in my trusty Landy Disco which got out of our lane with no problem whatsoever. Once out of the village and onto the main roads we have come to a grinding halt as we join the rest of the country that comes to a standstill after a few flakes of snow.

So Mr Brown, the answer. Either have seperate lanes for all us sensible folk that own a 4x4 so we don't have to crawl along behind Joe Public in his Fiesta or Nissan Micra.

Or. Make it compulsary for every family to own a Land Rover.

Think of the advantages of the second option.

This would ensure job security for, we hope, British workers. Also, it would put an end to the crawl to work or absenteeism caused by the inclement weather. Thus, no halt in production which will give us a head start on Jonny Foreigner.

So Clarkeson has been right all along. If the tree huggers disagree, let them keep their pissy little Prius's and we can all laugh and tell them to f**k off when they need a tow out of a 2 inch snow drift.

I was thinking of starting a muppet alert thread but...

here's a few

dark blue Mondeo crawls towards me while I wait to turn right, front of  the car totally encased in white (I think they call the stuff snow) as I expect him to pass me so I can make the turn and get out of the way of twenty cars behind me he stops then turns in where I was going. Back of the car is clear of snow, he has all his lights on and is indicating a correct turn.

but none of us could see his lights from the front! His screen had a small area that he could peer out of

I drive into the side road when coming home after this and there in front of me, middle of the road a bloke and woman pulling plastic sledges with a kiddy on each not looking behind them just after the blind corner. She sees me, mutters and steps up onto the pavement at some geezer's drive, he just takes no notice! This road has wheel ruts but no grit. I wait then when he pulls the kid left around a corner, I start to move forward to get in a high enough gear to run up the slope to the top of the road

except for some muppet in a (another dark) blue Astra

Kermit with Miss Piggy and a few other smaller muppets is trying to climb the hill in first with his front wheels spinning and throwing smoke everywhere when he reaches tarmac

So I have to lose my momentum and become a queue

and he just misses a whole line of parked cars as he slips to the low side of the road camber

I love snow driving, it is easy

why cant muppets do it

Anyway now I feel a bit better and bugger it, the snow is thawing. damn

But to be fair, this session has lasted longer in t'Migglands than usual, Friday and we still have plenty though it is searching the drains and gutters as we sit yere

But ne'er mind, they tell me I'm having some more over the weekend!

Bill, you'd enjoy a thread on the other forum I moderate - http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=71872&v=f

We've already been round the "idiots snowballing cars" topic  (now a hidden thread, it got rather repetitive) and there's one running about how badly BMWs appear to be affected. But it's altogether more serious and strait-laced there. Lots of moaning and pedantry, and quite heavy moderating to keep it in order.

My Beemer seems to be ok in the snow, but on the ice it was a nightmare.

This was a surprise as I have not driven a rwd car on snow since my RS2000 in the late 80's and never any type of car with an auto box on the slippy stuff.

Its all gone here in sussex, but it seems to be sleeting now and bit more is snow is forecast tonite.

Hi Redstu,
Metric snow is measured in cm  or metres    Anything less than a cm is refered to as a "dusting" if lying on the ground or flurries if falling through the air. ;D

Hi Nick,
Now those pictures raise the topic of Road Conditions:
Both Examples of Snow Covered.
For some strange reason the next best is Centre Bare which when only the tire tracks are clear is somewhat of a misnomer. (You have tyres we have tires)
Clear ofcourse means the road surface is clear of snow though the banks at the side of the road may be 16 feet high ::) ::)
Snow Conditions 101 Here endeth lesson 2
What have you done to piss the snow gods off ;D

I travel to Finland a fair bit, its the law there that you must have a set of snow studded tyres for the winter months, they still get stuck from time to time but are far more used to it, as would we if it happend every bloomin year.

The local councils dont fanny about with salt and grit, just use ploughs.

Title: Re: Snow!!!!
Post by: redstu on February 08, 2009, 11:15:46 am
I believe that in Germany you need a set of winter tyres for the adverse conditions. Most of the cars in the UK nowadays have low profiles made for grip and removing water not for cutting through snow and slush, not suprising that many people have trouble. My dunlop sp01s dont do much good in the snow and these are only 65s.

Correct RedStu, even my hire car out of Munich Airport in December was fitted with Winter Tyres. If you are in a bump in snow and your tyres are not fitted then it will invalidate your insurance.

We had our Ration on Thursday evening.   I ventured out this morning and just about got up the No sign to me that any grit/slat spreading has taken place other than on the bus routes.  (Why do I bother paying council tax?)

Saw one house where the owner is going to be a bit miffed.   Some jerk obviously forgot to break and went straight on at a T Junction and took out the guys fence.  Possibly more I was too busy watching my own progress to observe further damage.

So much for global warming.

Sometimes you have to leave them on the drive because the roads are clogged up by the beemers that have been abandoned by owners that knew they hadn't got a hope in hell of reaching their destination before they left home. A bit like my missus.

NO chance too much ice so Health and Safety dictates they need to stay off the road until the snow and ice have melted.   Then they'll send out the gritters.

you must be peaking again Mr Zarse, today was like all other days, 06:30 alarm call, up to see what the weather was doing, decided to stay in bed for a while, porridge and tea, shower, set off towards the hospital for my appointment, mobile call from the same to see if I was inbound and if I would mind switching my appointments about, so Donor lymphocyte Infusion first, thats more foreign immune cells pumped into me, highly specilised treatment, next an extra to do my weekly consultant check-up today rather than tomorrow, also take bloods to check, free light chain counts, chimerism check, Neutrophil count, etc. Finally Pentamidine Infusion to prevent pneumonia.

Yep, your right its a hoot a minute lying in bed all day, sorry about your soft fruits, freezing them isn't good it'll all be soft and mushy when it thaws. ;D

Is it just me or are the news bulletins talking about nothing but the snow? It's getting tedious. It's winter, it snows. Why are we so surprised??????

It's just more of the usual "whipping up a frenzy". If the media shut up about stuff quite often the event would pass by unnoticed and life would carry on as normal. Remember the Ross/Brand phone call? Did anyone hear it live? How many complaints were received? A=Lots more than actually heard it!

I blame the media for a lot of what's wrong these days...

Back to snow. Still fairly thick here, but no new stuff since 4pm yesterday. Wifeys walk to work took her 40 mins instead of the usual 15. Think I need a newer, more stable one - one with a bit more traction would be good  ;) ;D

Just spent 35 minutes of my lunch hour watching a div wearing a baseball cap fitting snow chains to the rear wheels of a Renault Clio ::)

There must have been others watching too cos just as he had finished two good samaritans went out and told him ;D

Oh such merriment.

UPDATE.

Looks like he gave up and phoned Daddy to come and rescue him. The look of utter despair on his Dad's face was something to behold. ;D

you must be peaking again Mr Zarse, today was like all other days, 06:30 alarm call, up to see what the weather was doing, decided to stay in bed for a while, porridge and tea, shower, set off towards the hospital for my appointment, mobile call from the same to see if I was inbound and if I would mind switching my appointments about, so Donor lymphocyte Infusion first, thats more foreign immune cells pumped into me, highly specilised treatment, next an extra to do my weekly consultant check-up today rather than tomorrow, also take bloods to check, free light chain counts, chimerism check, Neutrophil count, etc. Finally Pentamidine Infusion to prevent pneumonia.

Stop whinging and get out there and make a Snow Man man, the fresh air will do you the world of good....... sounds like you are in good company with Count Freelightchain, Chimerisum the Chec as well as Count NeutroPhil........
