Title: Nurburgring 24hrs - advice needed!
Post by: Weena on February 17, 2009, 01:18:11 pm
Some of the Melans are thinking of going to the Nurburgring 24hrs race on 23/24th May, can anyone offer advice on camping, tickets etc? and is anyone else from CA going?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated  :)

I will be going again :)

It is a brilliant event, a lot going on over the 4 days so lots of planning required to make the most of it ;) There are a couple of options for camping. Either the permanent site at Mullenbach or the temporary camping grounds around the Nordschleife. Now this is just personal opinion but go for the temporary camping grounds every time! The facilities aren’t great (no showers) but there are bogs and most of them have a bar. The main pluses are that you will have a trackside view and the atmosphere is great. You can pay for camping and entry tickets on the gate. The campsite you head for will be driven by the time you arrive. Hatzenbach, Brunnchen and Wipperman/Hohe Acht fill up very early in the week. There are a lot of hotels in Nurburg and Adenau (both right next to the circuit).

No showers!!!!  :o  its bad enough with no hairdryers / straightners etc!

Is Mullenbach walking (staggering) distance from the track?

oh and for anyone else that may be interested - ferry prices, for a car of 4 people travelling out fri morning and returning mon late afternoon it works out at £18.75 each! bargain  :)

Ive worked out the round trip will be 1016.6 miles, how much will that cost in fuel? (sorry im a proper girl  ???) we will probably be going in a 1ltr polo  :)

It is within easy reach of the GP circuit but then you will end up spending all of your time watching from a modern sanatised F1 track instead of the Nordschleife. To be fair though, you can always hop in the car and drive to some of the other parts of the track. Do this on thu, fri or sun becasue once the race starts on Sat the roads are very busy.

I have created a map for the event showing locations for camping. This is hosted on my site so, Mods, please remove if inappropriate.

Now there's an idea the ACO should adopt - would save the legs a bit    :P :P

You are obviously unaware of the Melans Code of Conduct.

It reads:  Once at the track no driving shall take place as you shall be drinking from sun up to sun down.  Note - sometimes these two times blend into one.    ;D

I may even be persuaded to go! Then company car and fuel! Can easily fit you girls and cases in the car. Funny seeing Row and Ester get out the smart car at Spa two years ago though.

And an excellent code of conduct it is too ;D All the more reason to camp out on the Nordschleife then and you will have racing and beer only yards from your tent!

Depending on the seemingly never ending drain on funds, I could be persuaded to attend too. Its a long shot but I'll work on it. I don't think Lady PP will be too approving but you never now ;)
Sounds like fun..... but by her comment about last years LM of " You spent £60 on a race ticket to drink Guiness all weekend and ignore the cars"I think explaining I am going to Germany to do similar may fall on unpersuaded ears ::)

I have to say it's very tempting, especially as a lot of the LMS dayes clash with other commitments already for this year.

Only problem might be that it is the weekend of the end of May Bank Holiday Weekend and the start of the school half term and I think we might be trying to do a week/long weekend away.

We'll see!

I'm attending a festival on 23th, so I won't make it there for the 24.

No sorry Chris won't be there due to his taking exams to become a science teacher  :o but he's promised to let me take his selection of amusing teeshirts to LM, so you should be okay for the I'm a C*** time of night! He's been teaching sex education recently, remind me to tell you about what the kids in Redhill think about the uses of cling film as a contraceptive!  :o

I guess if we get stuck at N'ring we can phone him and he'll tell us what to say, I'm absolutely convinced he won't stich us up with something filthy when we're speaking to the nice man from the Politzei!  ;)

I missed the race last year so that the 24hs of the 'Ring are on my to-do list for this year, too (as part of the big three - 'Ring, LeMans and Spa 24hs).

http://adac.24h-rennen.de/en.html is the official site - they do speak English.

I know it's odd and totally untypical for a good CA thread to jump back on topic but I'll try now. Although (or because) I live close by I have no experience with the campsites at the Nring, I never stayed a night out there. I've seen that the campsite map on the website lists 6 temporary campsites. Does anyone (Dobbo?) have a recommendation which of these campsite-bogs-bar places is the best one and could become a CA meeting place?

Well I will attempt to list the pros and cons of the sites.

Hatzenbach pros: Good spectating, close to the GP circuit (paddock), usually a bar at the end of the Hatzenbach complex, close to Nurburg village (couple of decent restaurants).
Hatzenbach cons: Will get busy from monday onwards (need to be in by wednesday really if you are a big group)

Adenauer Forst pros: Good spectating (Fuchsrohre to AF is a very spectacular section of circuit climbing up through the trees), due to its remoteness will be the last site to fill and there is plenty of space, could arrive on Sat morning of race day and still find a spot, easy drive down into Adenau town (loads of restaurants and bars and a supermarket at the Breidscheid bridge)
Adenauer Forst cons: Its quite a hike to other parts of the circuit and the GP track and if you were brave enough to walk into Adenau be prepared for a very steep climb back up!

Metzgesfeld pros: Excellent spectating (great remote downhill section all the way down to Breidscheid), should be space left on the Friday, usually a bar, easy drive down to Adenau (see AF pros), real camping in the forrest!
Metzgesfeld cons: Although not as bad as AF the walk from Adenau town up to Metzgesfeld is a bit of a killer (not so bad if you go alongside the track as you can watch the racing as you go!)

Wehrseifen & Briedscheid pros: Excellent spectating, bars at Wehrseifen and Breidscheid, easy walk into Adenau
Wehrseifen & Briedscheid cons: None really although the prime spots near the road at Breidscheid will go early in the week.

Steikstreke to Brunnchen pros: Best spectating on the circuit (the wipperman complex is incredible, everyone want to see the Karussell and the jump at Pflanzgarten is pretty neat as well!), bars at Hohe Acht and Brunnchen
Steikstreke to Brunnchen cons: Gets very busy so get in quick, once you are in its impossible to access Adenau or Nurburg on foot.

Schwalbenschwanz pros: Plenty of space, should be ok to turn up on thu or fri, easy to walk to other parts of the circuit (i.e. Pflanzgarten, Brunnchen, Wipperman etc)
Schwalbenschwanz cons: Not the best spectating on the actual campsite (when compared to the rest of the Nordschleife of course!), can't access Adenau or Nurburg on foot.

All of these campsites have plenty of bogs. They aren't the nicest, just portaloos. They have taps but the water isn't drinkable, soft drinks can be bought from the bars and some sell food as well.

Let me know what day you are thinking of going and I can recommend which campsite to go for. A lot of this comes down to personal opinion of course ;) As an alternative there is hotel accommodation still available in Adenau, if anyone wants a few more luxuries (i.e. cold Weissbrau on demand ;D) then let me know.

The biggest "camping" grounds are located from Hohe Acht to Schwalbenschwanz
(4 to 6). There are NO facilities except Dixi toilets.
I quite like the part around Breitscheid (3) because it's close to supermarkets
and the "civilised world".

Crikey! thats a lot of information Dobbo  :) thanks

We're due to arrive Friday late afternoon / evening. Once there we don't really want to be driving until we leave so which campsite would you suggest we stay on that is within walking distance to beer and food?

Will there be anywhere to have a shower?  ??? or do we need to invest in shed loads of baby wipes!  :)

Title: Re: Nurburgring 24hrs - advice needed!
Post by: Dobbo on February 19, 2009, 01:18:25 pm
Of the temporary camping grounds around the NS I would say only Metzgesfeld and Adenauer Forst will have any space left. This is generally speaking of course, it is much like the old unallocated days of Le Mans in that the campsite will be full but if you drive around for ages you might just find a little bit of space with your name on it! What I am saying is Metzgesfeld and AF would be your best bet.

Neither of them are within easy walking distance of the bars and restaurants in Adenau town because the walk back up is very steep. If that is a problem you could try squeezing into Breidscheid (easy access to everything) and have Metzgesfeld as your backup.

For showering I've just filled up a bowl with water from the taps and got somebody to tip it over my head. Certainly wakes you up on a morning :o. I can see that might not be to everybodys liking though and to be fair that is why I now take the easy option of the hotel. You can always use the permanent campsite at Mullenbach that was discussed earlier.

Some more (maybe) usefull facts:
- The traffic around the circuit is much more intense than on the circuit during the weekend. (normal traffic, cars being recovered, people going from C to D).
- There's a free bus service running around the circuit (which might not bring you anywhere due to the taffic ... best of luck - I was sort of captured in one for 2 hours in 2002 and we made about 600 meters at around 02:00 - not very usefull).
- The best way to get from A to B is on bike... or walking. I'll take a bike.
- It's a very heart warming feeling to see you all at the 'Ring this year - please pull up all of your flags so that I can see you !!!
- It's ZEE BEST CHANCE to see Germany in utter chaos.  ;D
- Bring some warm clothes. There's been hail showers four years ago - it might still be cold in May.
- Some picture from long ago are buried here: http://www.clubarnage.com/forum/index.php?topic=7334.msg94156#msg94156

@ Dobbo and all: It's the "Steilstrecke" - and that is really steep - just to point that out.

I have one of the portable shower things that we bought from Maplins last year. Just put the submersible pump in a bucket of water and use the handheld shower head!

yes its good, not high presure power shower, but does the job. The other way is one of those garden pump spayers, cover it in black tape, leave it in the car in the sun and it heats up the water.

Both work OK, bit Heath Robinson, but adequate, just  ;D

Steve Zarse would like to attend, and my car is now over subscribed - neither of the potential occupants are nubile young ladies though, so I'm still open to offers.

Anyone else going who could potentially offer my old man, or Steve a lift down with a shared cost?

I admit to being very jealous of you lot going.  This has always been one of those "must see" races for me, its been a life-long ambition to see a race (and do a few laps) around the Nordschleife.  It remains the ultimate racing circuit.  I watched a dvd of the '73 German GP not long ago, it takes your breath away.

I'm really excited by the prospect.  The interesting bit for me, is that with all that track, I don't genuinely believe that a race driver would be able to learn it confidently in one weekend - especially when track time is shared, and alot of these drivers aren't regular racers.  It seems to me that it'll be the naturally quick, not the ones who have the best telemetry who end up being the best to watch...... I can't wait!!!

Fax....why not join us?  We will be drinking in the (hopefully) sun, cooking large dead animals on a BBQ, and watching cars...how could you ever resist??

Title: Re: Nurburgring 24hrs - advice needed!

A lot of the drivers have had a lot of practice on the Nordschliefe through taking part in the VLN series. Granted, there are also many drivers who are making their first appearance and it must be a steep learning curve! There are sections of track where you can watch 5 cars come through and see 5 different lines, Wipperman and Wehrseifen for example. Once the race gets going there are huge speed differentials and some very ballsy overtakes!

OK,  so which campsite are we all planning on heading for?

I think we will be the advance party arriving on Friday Afternoon, so how many others are going to want space and how much? Hopefully we can all camp together.

Is it worth buying the camping and race ticket in advance?

Title: Re: Nurburgring 24hrs - advice needed!
Post by: Brad Zarse on April 27, 2009, 02:05:43 pm
Campsite:  I would suggest camping out in the sticks around the Nordschleifering if possible - not likely to be as busy, and we're less likely to upset people at 4 am - although that is unlikely to worry anyone really I guess.

Vegas - Camping space would be good - but someone else is likely to have my tent - at the moment this is a detail to be ironed out.

I'm not sure about race tickets - I thought they were all available "on the day"??

Brad

Maybe pay for camping in advance and get ticket there, that way we can all get tickets for the same site.

Tickes (entry and camping) are definitely available on the gate. It isn't possible to buy camping in advance.

It is true that there won't be loads of space left by Friday afternoon but you'll get something.

Yes the 180 odd entries, might turnout to be a "who can get through the Norchdieffe traffic jam first and do some miles contest. Entry 138 - an "Opel Astra Caravan" entry caught my eye, could it be the Top Gear team having a go. >:D

Makes you wonder - can you enter a DFH/CA team ? Must have a silly vehicle to race around in.
We could ask Jan Lammers for one the BMW's he's racing at the moment. ;D

OK,  so which campsite are we all planning on heading for?

I think we will be the advance party arriving on Friday Afternoon, so how many others are going to want space and how much? Hopefully we can all camp together.

Is it worth buying the camping and race ticket in advance?

Can you save a space for 2 tents for us please, we dont care where we stay...

So whos going now in your party? and whos going from DFH? should we arrange a meeting place like we did at Spa?

Cross fingers the polo will make it, fuel leak last week, window wipers blew up this morning! mind you when i sorted breakdown cover out for Europe they said if they cant fix it they'll put us up in a hotel and give me a hire car!!  8)

Only 4wks! how exciting  ;D  ;D  ;D

I was gonna come over on saturdaynight, but I just saw the timetable of the festival I'm going to, I don't think it will be much fun for me to stay sober till 1 am, and then drive over to Nürburg, and find you all asleepwhen I arrive at 4 am! I'll just get drunk at the festival and stay with my sister for the night.

Any where is fine with me.  As long as we can make some space for the later arrivals and we have something to drink.

What's the verdict with tents?  I have a smallish 2 berther I'll bring along.

I can't fit a tent in my car....nicht, null, nada, nowt.....

Andy did I hear mention of the Commer?  Can I bung a tent in that?
Is Paul coming and therefore bringing the C-Max?  Both Steve and I could do with people shoving odd bits of luggage in with them - the s2k has 2 tenths of sod all room in it.

Ive got a 6 by 2 meters I won't be needing that weekend, Paddy can bring it down for you. We had it with us at Brands last year if you can recall it. ;) Only thing is, it's one large space, as somewhere somehow the seperation got lost at Le Mans '07.   :-X

I discussed the issue of tents with Rick the morning after my party the other week and as i was still a bit pissed I don't remember too much. However, I think we agreed that we'd take Steve's field hotel. It comfortably sleeps six people. We might just have room in the back for a small tent too, although I'm not sure why such a thing wouldn't fit in the back of Brad's hairdresser's car.??? If Brad removes the curling tongues, clippers, straighteners etc the boots not that small   :-*

Also, just like on Ryanair, we agreed those travelling in the Rickmobile should be restricted to one small backpack/cabin bag sized case each for personal items, clothes etc. We have coolboxes, cookers, gas bottles etc to fit in and space very much at a premium. Sorry to be dull...

No matter how positive the weather forcast sounds 3 days ago - you MUST be prepared to come across torrential rainfalls , lots of wind and cool, chilly nights, this can always happen in this part of Germany, even in summer. 3years ago they had to stop the race for some hours during the night because there was too much water on the track and the fog was so dense that some drivers missed the track and ended up in emergency exits instead ;D

I still have a whole roll of heavy duty ones I scavenged last year at LM. They have nice yellow handle things that can be used as a drawstring to keep it secure below ones buttocks and save any embarassing exposure if its windy. That is assuming that one will only be wearing the bin bag and nothing else :D
I will lend you some.

Ro - I think I'm going to bring my laptop. which is packed with Music - Steve is bringing his Ipod, and I am obviously bringing my car, which has quite a big stereo system - Although I suspect the bit that adds beef to the volume might have to stay at home....we'll see - depends how light Steve can travel really!!

If anyone has some kind of mid sized speaker system, then it would probably be a good addition to the luggage as there's a limit to the amount I can run my car, and the laptop speakers are unlikely to set the world alight?

Everytime I've ever been to Germany or Austria, and that's quite a lot as i love going there, I've heard Life is Life at least eight times a day. And not always the original Opus version but the appallingly dreary version by Laibach.

It's a depressing state of affairs, watch it here at your peril...  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbB1s7TZUQk&feature=related

Does anyone know why it is possible to march to ALL German music?  ;D

So you havent got enough room to take a tent but you're taking a lap top?

Am I the only one that thinks Brads a sandwich short of a picnic??  ::)  :)

Did you know that the particular opus song can actually be blamed on a dutch beer manufacturer (see linky), Bavaria! sh*te beer by the way, never buy it!

Duvel and Leffe aren't lagers in the same league, those are high gisted and way stronger as an ordinary pilsner lager. Oh, and I also forgot the Grolsch which I even drank in the local pub when I was in England last march!

Just as everything was going so well......  as im speaking to Rick on the phone tonight my new car breaks down  :'( :( :'(

It is now in the hands of the garage whether the Melans make it to the ring, apparently i have hydraulic fluid leaking from my clutch into my gear box (sounds painful!)
I had my polo for 12yrs and only in the last 3wks has it ever broken down, Katie the Corsa isnt even 2yrs old yet! I have only owned her for a week today, I wonder if I could make the garage give me a courtesy car if they can't fix it tomorrow? (that i could take to Germany?!)

and in case you're wondering Est and Hayley both only have 2 seats in their cars and Kelly has a list a mile long of repairs that need doing to hers before she'd take it abroad (already tried that one!)

a fed up melan   :'(

Sounds like ur slave cylinder (if its got a Hydraulic clutch) or the crank shaft oil seal leaking into your bell housing (ooerrrr) to me... if its contaminated the clutch then hmmmm.
You can use the PPR Pug 406 Diesel if you can get to Andys and I know Steve Z is thinking of assistance with his Bora.
You will get there!
Trust Brethren, Zarse and CA assistance.... probably the best assistance in the world.
Call me if you want the Green Slug... much bigger than the Corsa and good on juice. Smells a bit odd inside but has big sofa like seats... and no stereo. oh and the fuel guage only works first thing in the morning, but it will sit at 80 - 90 all day and do 48 ish mpg. Feel free to go half cooking oil if you want but its the same price as diesel now so not worth the hassle... but smells nice ;D

F8cks sake....

Right...lets look at the options.....

Option 1: Garage fixes/gets courtesy car for you

Option 2: You all pile onto a train to Basingstoke, and Hayley gets you to Andys - You then either take Hayley's car, or Steve drives you down, and someone jumps in with me....

Option 3: As above but with the green pug (not recommended - remember this is Pig Pen's car)

Option 4: get yourself to Oxford (which isn't hard from Leicester) and meet Steve tomorrow night...or jig the plans around to get to Steves early doors on Friday.

Not an option:  Non Attendance / Giving up / being ruled by your car.

Carlsberg don't make breakdown services - but if they did, they'd probably look something like the combined might of Zarse/Bretheren/Melans/Club Arnage.

Bradley.. your options list look good apart from option 3.
The Green slug is a good honest old beater, having been maintained by my mechanic from new and for all its 223000 miles until he was given it by the owner. I have done 4000 miles since buying it 6 weeks ago and it has been faultless.
May I also add that while driving it other motorists do not question your sexual orientation, think of rainbow flags, coloured handkerchiefs in back pockets, red jeans, vests, public toilets, lorry drivers and high energy dance music.
I believe this may be a bonus over and above driving your chosen transport... if not somewhat slower and less driftable.

Garage not open yet, you are right LPP it is something to do with the slave and bell (the Green flag dude wrote those words on the diagnosis sheet anyway!)

If they cant fix it today, I'll make them give me a courtesy car and then i think No4 is the best option...

It's not really the same though is it Bob. Being given a big apple and seeing Springsteen's new jersey aren't really on a par with racing on the Nordschleife and drinking with the Melans. Seems to me you've been given the crappy end of the stick. Or have I misunderstood?  ??? ;)

Just got back home from todays practice sessions ... Lovely weather, quite a good crowd and nice pictures.  Watched the final half hour of the oldtimers practice session and the 24h practice session at the GP Strecke (Mercedes tribune, Ford Kurve and Dunlop Kehre) and got off to Breidscheid afterwards to watch the Renaults.

Drove allmost 600 kms today just to watch the practice sessions, maybe people are right when they say I'm crazy  ;D.  Can't make it tomorrow (some bloody stupid marriage I have to attend), but will be back there Sundaymorning pretty early for the closing hours of the race ...

A few pictures wil follow later tonight.

Beautiful.... Whilst Kev may have forgotten to come this weekend - I think I might have forgotten to see any cars....in fact the one attempt I did have at watching the racing, resulted in the loss of all of my clothes except for one shoe, and a fag packet.....

Ridiculous weekend - lots of photos - most of which should never ever see the light of day - Nurburg is absolutely beautiful - the most picturesque setting for a racetrack I've ever seen.

and the final word?

Ich habe.... (said very very loud, in the middle of a german bar).....

But the question is, is it better or different than Spa?

For gods sake - you have no stamina - 6 days to go until the next round....

Thanks for making my third and final stag hugely memorable....well....it will be when the photos surface so that I can piece it all back together anyway :)

Germans...everywhere....seething with them sir....

That tree was fully forty feet long! The gimp and me pulled it down as it was dead and didn't seem to be much use to anyone else.

I've been lurking for the past few weeks and can I just say how disgusted I am at your behaviour in Germany!  I've heard a few reports from the Melans and I'm gutted I wasn't there to witness the carry on  ;D  I hope that those injured in events are going to be on form in two weeks time?  AndyZ, nice review and glad at least some of the Melans could attend it sounds like they had a great time  ;)  I'm sure I'll be given a full debrief from Ro, Est and Hayley when I see them a week on Wed.  Roll on the 10th when we set off for another great random trip!  Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Wonderful footage. For some unusual reason I thought it was longer but that may have been due to drink lag.
Will that be rolling while the vows are being made tomorrow? >:D

It's always around Fronleichnam which is a bank holiday in Germany. This is very late next year, first weekend in June 2010.

We could always do the LMS race if the 24hr is too close to LM?

These are the Fronleichnam dates for the next years.

Fronleichnam 2010: Donnerstag, den 3.6.2010 - Le Mans 12/13.06 2010
Fronleichnam 2011: Donnerstag, den 23.6.2011 - Le Mans 11/12.06 2011
Fronleichnam 2012: Donnerstag, den 7.6.2012 - Le Mans 16/17.06 2012
Fronleichnam 2013: Donnerstag, den 30.5.2013 - Le Mans 15/16.06 2013

I've added the most likely dates for Le Mans.
2010 is going to be deadly ... 4 days at the Nordschleife, and then straight to Le Mans  ;D
