The Penske Automotive Group is one of the largest Porsche dealers in the US, been selling Porsches for almost six decades.  I can’t speak for you, but that sounds like a long relationship to me

General Discussion / Porsche returns to LMDh prototypes in 2023

Porsche to return to the LMDh prototype class with duel WEC, and IMSA programmes.  Effort will be spearheaded by Penske Racing.  Eventually customer cars available as well.  When Penske ended their Acura IMSA programme, and Porsche simultaneously ended their factory GTLM effort, this was suspected.  Great news for sports car racing fans, Porsche & Penske go back a long time together!

Part of the 1988 LM winning trio for the Silk Cats has passed aged just 62 after a brief illness, far too young to be checking out.

Indeed, a legend has passed.  His call of the epic Villeneuve-Arnoux battle at the end of the '79 French GP at Dijon is still one of my favorites.  He's probably arguing with James already...

General Discussion / Re: Carroll Shelby's personal Cobra auctioned

Thanks for the info LB, that makes sense that the original box couldn't handle the extra BHP & torque.  When I watched the auction on TV, the commentators left me with the impression that it went through a series of owners after Carroll's passing, but after doing some reading last night, it appears that most of the mods that were done were at Shelby's request, different engine, transmission, paint, etc.  so it sounds like it went through a evolution over its lifespan.  It has been restored to its original specs.

Did a little digging, it was Shelby himself who had the autotragic installed, don't know what reasoning was behind it, not something I would have expected from him.

I wasn't familiar with Triggers Broom, but it sounds entirely appropriate in this case.  I've never been a advocate of turning vintage & historic cars, and bikes into garage queens, they were meant to driven.  However its pretty unfortunate how this piece of history was Frankensteined by miscreant post Carroll owners, one heretic actually installing a automatic transmission in it.  Hugely historic chassis, but that's about the only original part left on it. The phrase more money than sense springs to mind...

Yes, I've been to Daytona many times for the 24 Hours, yes it can get chilly there too...

As a result of the date change for Le Mans, IMSA has done some creative schedule shuffling.  The VIR IMSA meeting originally scheduled for new LM weekend, has now been moved to the early October date originally penciled for the Petit LM.  The Petit is now scheduled for November 10-13, yikes!  Anyone who has been to the Petit LM in October knows how cold it can get at night, in mid-Nov it could be nothing short of frigid!
But I'll give IMSA full props for re-arranging the schedule to accommodate the teams, and drivers who were planning on going to the Sarthe.  For our colleagues who haven't yet seen the new Corvette C8.R's in person, they're bad fast, and awesome looking & sounding.

General Discussion / Carroll Shelby's personal Cobra auctioned
« on: January 17, 2021, 09:20:49 pm »
At the recent Mecom Auction in Kissimmee, FL, Carroll Shelby's personal 1965 427 Cobra sold for 5.4 million bucks!  I'm curious what our resident Cobra experts think?  It's not all original, and has been modified several times before being restored to original condition.  Enormously historic car, but seems crazy money for a car that doesn't even have the original engine in it.  Any thoughts?

Hi guys,
This news is a real bummer, but on the bright side, at least the ACO is offering refunds.  I'm sitting on four useless tickets for this year's Indianapolis 500, and no refunds are being offered by IMS.  You can keep the same seats for next year's race, or be issued a credit for use on a IMS event, expiring in 2023.  You spend it with them, or lose it.  Nothing like having one's hard earned income held hostage...

Aussie GP cancelled, a Mclaren crew member tested positive.  St Pete Indycar about to get the chop.  Feel really bad for all the CA members who were planning on coming to Sebring, I hope you can get refunded for all of the expenses (flights, hotels, car rentals, etc.).

Bob Akin's Coca-Cola 935's, and 962's were always hugely popular back in the glory days of eighties IMSA.  Looking forward to seeing the RSR's in this livery in person at Road Atlanta in a few weeks.
The sad irony is that it was in a crash at Road Atlanta that Bob suffered the injuries from which he later succumbed.
