My first year was 2003 so I still feel like quite a newbie but even in the time I have going the changes have been fairly big. I used to love standing on the inside of Arnage on the Thursday and Friday watching all the glorious cars that had made the pilgrimage to Le Mans, drive what they could of the circuit. Now jean'de'mary's just move you on.... Bless em !

The feeling I have when I arrive at Le Mans has never changed, the atmosphere, the people, the camaraderie have remained the same. Rupert Brooke's had it right in the first two sentences, which is how I feel about Le Mans.

I just wish I had discovered it 20 years earlier with my Dad.

If there is one thing I know how to do its build bottle walls; 2010 we built Tower bridge, and St Stephens Tower on Karting Nord, then 2011 we built a one in ten scale model of Nelson's column, then 2012 we tried Blackpool tower although the ground was too wet at the back of Nord.    to get the lean on the tower legs.

On a summer day in Normandy, in 1944, a British soldier stepped out of his slit trench and advanced alone through a hail of bullets across a meadow towards a position held by some of the most formidable elements of the German army. Firing his bren gun from the hip, he was hit and fell. He got up and continued his advance, firing all the time. Again he was hit and again he got up, still firing from the hip. Finally he was hit once more and fell for the last time. Nevertheless, mortally wounded, he carried on firing from the prone position in the long grass. He died two days later.

Why would a 23 year-old battle-hardened British corporal throw away his life in a desperate and lonely assault against an attack by 50-60 élite members of an SS Panzer Corps who could, and did, so easily train their machine guns and mortars on him?

Perhaps his anger simply erupted: a few seconds before Sidney began his lone advance, his friend 'Tojo' Tomlin had died in his arms, hit in the head. It was Tojo's bren gun that he was using.

Perhaps Sidney, like so many exhausted soldiers, had simply had enough and decided to end it all: taking as many of the enemy with him as possible.

Or was it that Sidney Bates, a simple working-class lad from London, knew what General Montgomery knew: that the whole Battle of Normandy was to hinge on denying the Germans control of a bleak and apparently obscure but vital hill-top position above the little village of Burcy.

A sergeant who witnessed the event believes that Sidney simply acted as any well-trained, first-rate infantryman would have done. Attack was the best means of defence and by advancing he greatly improved his field of fire.

We'll never know what Sidney was thinking but the consequence of his actions is beyond any doubt. A lone soldier did indeed prevent those élite German forces from taking that hill. And that hill controlled the main east-west road across Normandy. And that road (from Condé-sur-Noireau – Vire) was what the Germans had to control if they were fulfil Hitler's orders and halt the Allied advance in its tracks at Mortain.

Posthumously Sidney Bates won 'a very well-deserved' VC, the highest British military honour. But many who read this excellent book Normandy: The Search For Sidney may conclude that Sidney's greatest memorial is not the medal, nor the monument on the edge of 'his' field, but that Europe is free today because of men like him.

Bayeux is well worth a visit. We will be going Sunday the 8th. Sidney Bates is buried there, one of the most self sacrificing stories I know of. A sobering start to Le Mans, but we would not be going without people like him.

I will be there very early Saturday setting up and all day Sunday working..... Boo hiss.... But I usually get an hour or two before opening to have a look round. We will only be taking 5 cars this year  , and not great stand, but it should still be a great weekend.

Thanks for that fella's, I have put that in for a very early start on Friday ( not sure how an early start will fair with the troops, but o well  ). Being that we are all classic / modified petrol heads that for us will be a good start to the day, then on to piston heads Friday service  .

My nephew came with us for the first time in 2011 he was 8 at the time,( his dad had been attending for the last 9 years ). We arrived as always for first thing Monday morning, sent a group out for supplies whilst we put the tents up, they promptly returned half way through with stock of beer, bread, and basics also some panache for the little un  . We all got on it, including the Nephew during the day ( knocking back the panache ). It got to around 1900 hrs and his dad said to him " come on lad time for bed " only to be greeted with a completely out of character " no dad I am staying up with the boys "  followed by a slightly Bolshy walk back into the marquee. The nephew was then asked how many panaches he had drunk, he quite proudly stated  "7 or maybe 8 " . A quick check of the bottles confirmed our suspicions 1.5% alcohol. Drunk at the age of 8 ( we changed the panaches after that for 0.5% ), but now there is no way we can go to Le Mans without him,he is a little legend in the making

2011 most of us left Sunday after the race left a group of 4 behind on Karting Nord ( we have never had any trouble up until then ). The boys decided to go into Arnage for a bit of grub, nothing of any value left in the tent ( but still a silly move ). Our neighbours that we had got on well with all week confronted a group of " do as you likeys " going through the dirty washing in the tent. In one way I am glad the boys were not there, as they are more than a little handy, and would have not thought twice about beating the ever loving granny out of them. Although they are do as you likeys they are still French and french law would probably find on their side. W@#*$#s........ !

Nothing says style like the last of the V8 interceptors, a slow hand clap from all the others old enough to appreciate it for the groom.
The Bride needs a convertible so your right go classic....... The Munsters wagon says it all for a wedding
Bridesmaids Keep it real, keep it British Anything from the proffessionals or the Sweeny.
This for me would have been the coolest list of cars to use for my wedding ( The wife says " she would not have married me ", if her car was the munsters wagon )
