Interesting to see they've tightened things up a little this year; no dogs, scooters or bikes in the circuit. Also - "There will be several checks at the Gate: visual inspection of coats, jackets and bags, scanning with a metal detector, and body searches. To speed up the procedures, we ask you to open your bag ready for inspection, and then open your jacket. Also keep your ticket handy and present some form of ID."  |

We're out Pompey - Caen overnight Weds and back Monday PM, in a green Evora. Camping in Houx with the DfH crew, nopanic, Steve Pyro, kev & gang.
For those that have done it so far, what's the sitrep at Portsmouth getting onboard and at Calais arriving?

Hmmm, I think this is kicking the can down the road so:
a) they don't need to issue refunds (yet)
b) if and when the government says they can't hold more than x people in one place, the ACO will be able to blame them (and maybe they have insurance which will pay out?)

According to AutoSport, there's an announcement about spectator access coming on 30th June... https://www.autosport.com/wec/news/150037/new-condensed-fourday-2020-le-mans-timetablePractice will now begin at 10:00 on Thursday morning, the first of three sessions on the opening day. The opening 45-minute qualifying session in which all 62 cars will take part has been brought forward to 17:15. The 30-minute Hyperpole session fought out by the fastest six cars from each of the four WEC classes in first qualifying will now take place from 11:30 on Friday morning. This will be preceded by a final one-hour session of free practice. The raceday warm-up on Saturday morning has been set back to reflect the fact that the cars will be on track on Friday. Scrutineering (pictured below) will take place at the track on Wednesday rather than in the centre of Le Mans and the race will be begin at 14:30 on Saturday as previously announced. More details on spectator access will be announced on 30 June. |

I'm starting to think, even if the race does run, and even if they allow punters in, do I want to actually be part of it?  September is looking to be another 'stay at home' month with the Goodwood Revival now cancelled. Well, I'll be in France one way or another in September. If the race doesn't go ahead - or if I / we decide not to (or are not allowed to) attend - me and Mrs D will be pootling around northern France as we have the ferry booked and I'm not sure that'll be cancellable. Come and join our convoy if you like  |

well, I didn't have the social engagement that I started this thread thinking about.. but the virtual 24H race was very enjoyable - not as good as the real thing, but I thought it was highly impressive. The coverage was great, the racing was really good too.
I could imagine this kind of thing could carry on - imagine if you had a physical Le Mans in June and a virtual Le Mans in February or something - could be a good way of sharpening up some of the teams and drivers.
The virtual experience would be better if there was some kind of actual pitstop (rather than cars just sitting still for some period of time), and if the damage done by crashing was visible - so if you pile into a tyre wall, you'd expect bodywork to be flailing about as you limp back to the pits...
Now the Virtual 24h has been done, I fully expect the ACO to announce that the real one will have no spectators... if it happens at all...
ewan, the computer boffins say what you are asking for , while possible, would take massive amounts of computing power. Only 50 cars for the same reason. Although we did not "see" damage the drivers apparently felt it. The cars did at least go up on the jacks in pit lane. IMSA has done some too but limited to fewer cars and only about an hour with no pit stops or damage. I wonder if this was the longest duration simulation ever? Phil Well, compute power is plentiful in some parts of the world... if the money is there... Be in no doubt, if the demand was there and the funding could pay for it, we could have sim racing with more cars, photorealistic impact yadda yadda yadda. The cool thing about this virtual 24h race was to show that there's more interest in this kind of racing - and that might mean more serious players with more $$ will get involved. Who knows, in 30 years time when everything is electric, you might even find the only way to take part in noisy motorsport is to do it in simulators... |

OK, now the virtual 24h is out of the way, I'm checking the news every day to see what the ACO has to say about the real one. There's still talk of the race as if it's really happening (eg McNish & co talking about it on the v24h commentary) but can it really go ahead with spectators present? With 24h Motos only recently announced as running behind closed doors and only 3 weeks before the new dates for the 24H du Mans, how can they organise things between now and then and it not be a complete muddle? Even if only 1/4 as many people came as would normally visit in June, there's no way any social distancing could be managed - grandstands would presumably be off limits too. I'm starting to think, even if the race does run, and even if they allow punters in, do I want to actually be part of it? |

Hmmm, that's odd - I bought digital tickets, requested a credit note/refund but haven't heard anything after that initial request was confirmed... and the my tickets page shows me the tickets I bought, but no credit note or anything...

I've just applied to refund a couple of entry & a couple of GS tickets. Typical ACO level of clarity in the confirmation page: 2020 Le Mans 24 Hours Credit Note Claim If you're holding your hard printed tickets, the refund will be made only once we received them. If you chose the eticket option, we'll proceed with the refund asap. In a speech on Tuesday ... the country's prime minister ... said that "events that bring together more than 5,000 participants...cannot be held before September".
OK, so the new Le Mans dates are 2 1/ 2 weeks into Sept, but this feels like they're not about to say no to an event of 5,000 punters at the end of August, but say an event of 250,000 is OK to run 3 weeks later. And the TV rights won't be anything like enough to cover the costs of running the race, I'd imagine. F1 could run with no spectators because they make so much from sponsors and TV, but I can't believe the ACO would be able to fund the race without revenue from the weekend.

Who's up for staging a distributed, virtual Le Mans 24h, on the weekend of 13/14th June?
Camping in your own back garden, not washing for a few days, eating mergeuz-equivalents washed down with stubbies of warm lager?
Someone might even stream an old race "as live", and with a bit of Zoom or Skype, collectives could form to talk pish every hour or so...
