One for our beloved Termietermite, methinks.
I should be arriving on the Wednesday morning on foot and I'll need to go food shopping on the Wednesday or Thursday.
I'll be staying on the Beausejour campsite (tickets and permit have been despatched) and I was wondering what cashpoints are at either Carrefour or the Super U at Arnage.
Also, which of the two is a shorter walk from the BSJ site. Looking at the map, I'd assume it's the Super U.
Can anyone help me with this?

Yep, Avus was formed by stretches of Autobahn. Actually hosted the German GP once (in 1959) but was so universally disliked by the drivers it never went back.
The Auto Union and Mercedes teams did some impressive land speed record running on the Frankfurt Autobahn in in the pre-war days, unfortunately the great Bernd Rosemeyer lost his life in one of these attempts.

The German GP of 1959 was won by Tony Brooks driving a Ferrari. Unfortunately it was marred by the dreadful death of Jean Behra in a supporting sportscar race. During the race, Hans Herrman's BRP more or less destroyed itself when its brakes failed. And the banked bend was the North Bend. The South Bend was never banked. One possible reason for the drivers disliking the Avus circuit was the two long straights being so close together. With little or nothing to seperate one straight from another and closing speeds of up to 300 mph it isn't hard to see why drivers disliked the circuit so much. |

Definitely the Nordschleife.
I defy anyone to look at the new ring, especially when compared to the old one, and not see how much worse it is than it's predecessor.

Obviously the Nurbgring is an evocative location of many a classic race.
I was wondering, as someone who's long wanted to go to the 'Ring at some point, what folk here thought of the circuit and its history.
I remember forst seeing footage (in car I think) of Jackie Stewart doing a fast lap of the 'Green Hell' as he called it (a circuit he apparently hated and feared and still does) and was pretty impressed by what the circuit was like. It seems unlike any other circuit in the world to me.
What do other people think?

Didn't it start at 3pm in 1984 due to their general election, the only time apart from last year it's not started at 4pm?
A 2pm finish would be cool, plenty of time for the mass exodus to the ferries, leaving a relaxed time for those of us staying until Monday. But less time for the support races
If I remember rightly they also moved the time in 1969 because of the Presidential elections. I think it started at 2pm that year. |

Looking good - at least the tramway work doesn't screw up the Mulsanne or the Chemin de Boeufs. Is there any indication on when the tramway will be in use yet? MG Mark In theory by May - will do a few recces between now and then. I was thinking of arriving on foot on the Wednesday. Will the tram service between the station and the circuit be running by then, do you think? |

It could have been to do with leaving the car in the event of a crash.
Given his disabilities, I reckon ASB would have had great difficulty in getting out of a car.
Maybe this contributed to his sad passing in some way.

I've just ordered a copy of Robert Edwardes' 'Archie And The Listers' (it comes highly recommended apparently), along with a copy of a Stirling Moss biography by the same author.
Obviously, Archie Scott Brown commands respect not only for his number of race wins, but the fact that he did it while in such poor physical condition simply amazes me.
I was wondering whether he ever raced at Le Mans and what kind of record he had there, if any.
Can anyone help here?

with regard to Button and Rubino, one of the issues may have been making sure their engines lasted because of next years FIA F1 rule changes?
I believe Honda have been working on engine development up and till the last possible moment before submitting there Brasil spec engine and is frozen for the next three years. All the other teams have submitted their engines, so no probs with them.
This was mentioned by Martin Brundle when doing commentary for ITV. All the other teams had handed in their engines but Honda hadn't, so they were making sure they lasted until the end of the race. And there's no denying that Schumacher, as much as I dislike him, is an immensely talented driver. It was his willingness to pull strokes that has, IMHO, tarnished his legacy. |

Rubens Barrichello always struck me as being a pretty decent fella.
And he certainly held on to his dignity when he was pulled over in the Austrian GP to make way for a certain Mr Schumacher to win.
Somehow, I doubt Schumacher would have been as reasonable about it if it were the other way round.

Grumble...Couldn't care less if the guy ever races again, wouldn't walk across the street to see him. Been over this before, the guy's won a bunch of races and titles, but with so little grace and diginity. As far as I'm concerned he can retire back to Switzerland, grow a long beard, long fingernails, and lock himself in a room like Howard Hughes.
I don't buy into celebrity worship. Just what we need is a F1 prima donna on the grid so his cult (I'm mean fans) can fawn all over him and chant his name in worship.
Why would Le Mans need him? The race seems to have done just fine the past fifteen years since his last appearance.

That and he didn't seem to mind knocking other drivers out of races, or trying to knock them out when it suited him. Hill, Villeneuve anyone? |

Well, I live in Plymouth, so Brittany Ferries is the best option for me. Just a ten minute cab ride to the ferry terminal, get on board and I'm in Roscoff in a few hours.
I go on foot as well, so that saves a few quid for beer and food etc.
I can get a ferry ticket (return) for about £100 and a train from Morlaix to Le Mans is only a couple of hours.
The handy part is coming home. I get back, hot tired, dirty and hungry and I've only got a ten minute cab ride before I'm in a hot bath with some food in the oven.
Works very nicely for me.
