Sad new to hear of John's passing. He was a fine racer, as mentioned usually taking on the big buck teams on a shoestring budget, and making them work very hard. I remember him mostly driving a bright yellow Lola in the second generation Can-Am series of the late seventies-early eighties. But my most vivid recollection of him was when Mid-Ohio staged a big prize money, 500 mile "wrung whatch brung" race in 1979, essentially if you turned up with any sort of sportscar or protoype you could race it. Some very serious kit showed up, including a Harley Cluxton Mirage-Ford driven by Derek Bell & Vern Schuppan, fresh from Le Mans, and a sea of Porsche 935's driven by the all greats of the era. But it was Gunn's yellow Lola that stole the show in qualifying, blitzing to pole and running away with the race until mechanical problems and rain dropped the car back.
