Le Mans sandwich

Have you ever heard of the expression, a "Le Mans sandwich," meaning some crucial tool or part hidden (illegally, of course) inside a "food" package and given to the driver of a stalled racecar out on the course by a crewmember or confederate?  Any known or famous examples?

Had the same question from Tim, Dave .. only one I could remember was an alleged incident regarding the 1979 winner but can't remember where I read it. Vaguely remember one of the crucial belts had snapped and the "official" story goes something like they borrowed another belt temporarily from another part of the car just to get back to the pits but there has always been suspicion about this as to whether or not it would have really worked.

Anyone got a spare 935K3 we can borrow to test the theory?

... maybe in the 50's they used it to provide the driver a new spark but I need to check

I vaguely remember the episode from the 1979 race that your referring to. Don Whittington had stopped out on the circut with some sort of fuel injection or fuel pump belt failure and he scavaged another belt from from the car to rig a temporary repair but it was too big so he had to build up the pully with electrical tape to take the slack out.  It held together long enough to get the car back to the pits and let the Kremer guys fix it properly.
I can't really recall where I read the account from, Road & Track perhaps.

I beleive three or four years ago Tom Coronel had a situation where the wheel was off -- he was offered some tools but not via a tasty sandwich.

Not a sandwich, but I recall, I think it was the in the 50's and I think Triamph, had a problem with a part, that the rules would not alowe them to replace but had to repair. So they put a new part in a bucket of water, the mechanic took the part of the car cursed that it was hot droped in to the bucket of water, and waited a few momments, took out the new part fiddeld with it and put it back on the car. Sneeky or what!
