I need some advice on cell phones. Would it be better take my phone and add the international service,or by a cheap throw away type phone for while I am there. And what do they cost?
Thanks Randy

Cheap throwaway phones are a virtually unknown device hereabouts and international calls ain't cheap. If you can set up an international service from your end I'd be amazed if you could do better here. But I will have a quick look at the cheapest provider I'm aware of and let you know so you can compare.

I'm still trawling round the Orange site to find the international call charges - did you find them, Landman? With LeClerc (the cheapest I've found but that doesn't mean the cheapest) Calls to the US and the rest of Europe are 39c and texts 15c but you also get charged 1.50 a month. No cards you buy will last until you're next back in France unless you continue to top them up. http://www.leclercmobile.fr/docs/site/fiche-tarifaire.pdfTheir cheapest phone is 25€ http://www.leclercmobile.fr/mobiles/Alcatel_OT-203e.htmlSo it is possible that you'll be better off buying here - don't know what the international charges look like your end, Randy.

Randy - I have AT&T and used it in '06. I added the international plan while I was there and did admittedly keep calls to a minimum. I think the plan was $6/mo. and calls were about $1/min. Not cheap, but it saved something like $.50/min. Before you even bother, make sure you have a quad band phone. All you need is a tri-band, but I can never remember which three, so I'll suggest getting all four. They'll probably have text plans, too. For me, it was easier to make the temporary changes and pay the difference rather than fart around buying a new phone.

Sorry Randy, bit late on this one.
Do a cheap one, thow away one.
Thats what we do when we go to the states, works out alot cheaper.
In fact still using the number I got on first road trip - Denver - Sebring, which was 2008, I think?

Tried that Steve still no good. The # he gave me started with a " + " sign. And there was no zero before the "44". Please send me yours via PM,as I should dial it. I have to make sure its working before I leave.

I've had awful trouble contacting my son from france on the +44 set up. Turns out he lost his phone and the iPhone hasn't arrived yet I try and put all the phone numbers into memory on a +44 basis (it doesn't cost more) as when you really need them you're in a ditch just outside Alencon

Randy, Try putting 011 in front of the 44 (apparently 011 is the international prefix used to dial somewhere outside of U.S.A.). Hope this works. From this website http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/dialing.html?p2=136Ade
