While I am in Le Mans i have been asked to set the questions in the weekly Pub quiz, i intend to do one of the rounds of 5 questions (not to difficult) on Le Mans.
Can some one tell me which years the above raced and what there final positions were.

Many thanks

Steve Pyro

Newman - 1979 - Dick Barbour Racing Porsche 935 - 2nd place overall

McQueen - never actually competed in the race (film backers wouldn't let him) - the film 'Le Mans' was made during and completed after the 1970 race.  He did, however, compete in the 1970 Sebring 12 hours.

Thanks Steve, I thought Newman finished second could not find any confirmation, alos thought MacQueen may have actually driven in the actual race the year the film was made.

The rumor is that Steve may have driven the camera car, which managed to finish ninth despite extra stops to change film and the extra aero drag of the cameras.

On a sadder note, racing may have contributed to McQueen's lung cancer, as his fire protection for his face consisted of rags soaked in liquid asbestos.

Newman may have only raced once, but he appeared on the entry list more times, and was down as a reserve driver on another car in 79.

McQueen never raced, but the rumour is that he did a stint in the camera car at one point.

He was entered in 1970 to driver a 917 alongside Jackie Stewart for the JW Gulf team, clearly that never happened. Would have made some story if it had come together.

Some people will tell you that slow is good - and it may be, on some days - but I am here to tell you that fast is better.

Congrat's to Newman for getting 12 podiums.

Not bas for an 'oletimer' I'd say.
At my age, it takes me all night to do what I used to do all night!!!!!!!!!!!
Then, growing old is compulsary, but growing up is just optional.

Mr. Rick

Met PLN when he raced at Daytona in 2001. I was the team's photographer but struggled to speak to him really other than "hi"! Never been so starstruck. Top chap ...  and Mrs. PLN was lovely!

My paths crossed with PLN a few times (including Daytona 2001) but only towards the end of his life (I'm only a youngster after all) and he seemed a bit 'remote' to all but his bosom pals, and notoriously camera-shy.
