For those of you who are not aware of Aberfan and what happened there, please read this - I have just read and signed the online petition.

For those not familiar with what happened there, try the above link.

This is kind of "off-topic", but I took a close look at the links posted by Nordic.
I was a 7 year old school kid when this happened. I remember the news broadcast quite vividly. It was a terrible, terrible and avoidable tragedy.
Putting little children in harms way and the disgusting way the NCB then tried to squirm out of responsibility was a revolting crime.
To now decide to build houses on the place given over for a memorial to these little kids is an utter disgrace.
Thanks for posting this.

Signed up.

This sticks in my memory, as this disaster happened on the morning of my 9th birthday, and most of the kids were the same age as me.

I can remeber this as well, and the memorial assembly at our school, where a lot of the teachers cried.  Very sad.

Nordic,

Thanks for bringing to my attention - just back from holiday and catching up - sigend the petition - half the family are from the valleys, so it means a great deal.

Done.

This tragic event was a mere blip on my radar until I moved to Wales, I too was quite young at the time. Here there is much more media comment on anniversaries etc. than elsewhere though, so it it not so easily forgotten.

A couple of my colleagues have friends or relatives directly affected by the disaster at the time and they are obviously none too pleased about the proposal.

It is daft to think that the council are even considering this.

Done!

It happened just before I was born but I have relatives from the Valleys and heard stories about it when I was growing up.

Can’t believe people have such short memories, and could even contemplate building on a memorial for short term profit.
My Nan was born in the valleys and would always recall with a tear in he eye that, although they were very insular (nobody talked to people form "up valley" and defiantly not from across valleys) all the men (mostly miners) from many miles around literally dropped everything and went to dig these kids out, they came back very quiet and did not speak of what they had seen. I remember the slag heaps and the constant rainy drizzle that was the cause of the landslide and it must have been awful.
A worthy cause.
