Just a guess but looks to me like the pit board was placed there to keep the sun out of the drivers eyes (in the pits anyway )

I figured they were practicing for the next round of ACO rule changes.

It was an early ACO proposal to slow them down.

in the end they have decided to lighten the Astons instead, and make
the Corvette boys race with a pirate patch over one eye.
