Vimy 90th Anniversary

This is the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy ridge.
Easter Monday 9th April 1917.
 
A corner stone of Canadian nationhood. perhaps out of proportion to it's military significance. "a tactical victory in a much larger failed offensive"
The success of the Canadian corps paid significant political dividends. The victory gained Canada a vote in the Imperial War Cabinet as well as an independent signatory in the Treaty of Versailles.

the history and happenings of The First World War (or The Great War) have never been a big part of Dutch education because of our neutrality in it. However the significance of it is still visible wherever you drive in northern France or Belgium. I know that for most people on allied side it is even a bigger part of history than The Second World War...

A fine, imposing memorial and a moving place, with the trench system still intact at the top of the ridge, mere yards apart, and with sections still wired off, tunnels dug to get troops up to the front line, and attacking uphill.   Fantaastic views from a commanding position.  Any doubt about the scale of the Canadian contribution, read on....
