RIP Alan Ball
« on: April 25, 2007, 02:33:09 pm »
Take your hat off, and raise a pint to the memory of Alan Ball, who sadly was caught in the final offside trap this morning.
I grew up watching him and his like play a game that we thought we owned, and for a little golden while we actually did.
Well done Alan, it was a good one!

I am old enough to remember that great day in the July sunshine forty one years ago when the England Team in red and white (grey and white from where I was sitting) lifted the World Cup, what a day, my dad shed tear!! Ball was so much a part of that great moment and I understand was generally a bloody good bloke too. He was also the first player to wear white boots if I remember correctly. RIP Alan.

Alan Ball lived in Warsash, Hants. Warsash is ironically half way between Portsmouth and Southampton and Bouncer was one of the few people on earth to be held in the highest esteem by both cities.

In fact he lived round the corner from Paul Zarse and was a much loved regular in the local pub, The Jolly Farmers. Indeed Paul told me this morning he'd seen him the other day and he seemed fine.

Whether it's the Boys of 66 you remember best, the managerial ups and downs or even the Bisto advert, everyone knew Ballie was a football man through and through.
I wouldn't sit there if I were you, it's still a bit wet.

I remember watching him play at the Arsenal in the early 70's with his squeeky voice and red hair.

Sadly missed.
