Testday laptimes - Diesel Power ????
« on: April 26, 2004, 09:21:58 am »
I was really looking forward to the first LMP-Diesel in Le Mans but looking at yesterdays lap times I saw that the much-talked-about Lola Caterpillar was even slower than all of the GT cars (4.25). I was always a fan of the ACO's willingness to accept "exotic" entries (like the Nasamax Bio-Ethanol-Fueled car) but the Lola-Caterpillar performance seems to be more than questionable. May be they should introduce something like a "Fastest category lap time + 10 %"- rule to restrict the grid to entries which make sense.

Does anyone who attended the testday has information about why they were so slow?

What's their mpg figure?
Are they working on the hare and tortoise theory? ;) ;)

If so the tortoise was still faster than the moggie.

Seem to remember an interview on Radio LM last year reference the bio fuel car. If I remember correctly there was a discussion to the effect that they needed to be allowed a larger fuel tank to compete, due to the lower calorific value fuel that they where using, but had to use a tank the same size a petrol engined cars, which hampered them.

If the difference between diesel and petrol in mpg and tank range is of the same order in race cars as in road cars, then there might be a hare & tortoise scenario.
Need mpg, tank size, lap times and a pencil and paper to work it out.
However tyre life would also come into the equation.
Could be intresting  :) :) :)

I don't beleave in the hare & tortoise scenario. If 4:25 is the best they can do, even a range of 100 laps per tank won't help ;-)

Totally agree Werner, especially as their tyres wouldn't last. Once VAG get involved with diesels (2005?) things could change.

When we spoke to the morgan drivers they had done a 4.25 but wanted a 4.18 until the car stopped on the Mulsanne stuck in gear.
